One bottle. I really need to get an erlenmeyer flask to drink from, maybe some dry ice for effect.

I believe Robbins and Cochrane (the medical school pathology Bible) indicated that only 10% of alcoholic hepatitis cases progress to cirrhosis. And something like 40% of alcoholics develop alcoholic hepatitis.

Anyway, ever since then, it's annoyed me whenever the media acts as if drinking = 100% chance of cirrhosis.

ani23: Health guidelines vary by country -- but that's typical in the less puritanical countries.

A unit is about one relatively weak beer, 1 oz of hard liquor, etc.

For best results, people say 4-5 units / day for men, 2 for women.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unit_of_alcohol

So read up, then drink up with a relatively un-pickled liver.

The 4-5 unit guideline assumes that revolutionary anti-pickling advances are not right around the corner. I'm not saying that anyone should multiply those figures by a factor-of-3 "faith in science" multiplier, but it would probably be prudent.

When ever I hear about cirrhosis all I can think of is that Seinfeld episode where Kramer and his dwarf friend fight on how get's to play the "cirrhosis patient" (sorry for bad quality, not mine) to train med students.

Doing a bit of research, it looks like current medical opinion is that moderate alcohol consumption reduces mortality below that of a teetotaller. If you're British (like me), between 10 - 15 units per week minimises mortality but, if you're American, it's only 6 - 9 units per week. Probably because of all the chub suffocating your poor livers. But it takes about 63 units to get do enough damage to get down to the mortality rate of a teetotaller. That's about a bottle of wine a day.

Oxford university and all that (new window)

Interesting to note is that the consumption figures were all self-reported so actual minima may be higher than the studies suggest. Just don't go blaming me when you pickle the shiat out of yourselves.

I really didn't need to read that article, especially today. Getting ready for the St. Pat;s parade later today, and I just got done filling several flasks with delicious, nutritious Jameson, and one with vodak. I just know I'm going to imagine I'm having liver pains later today. Then on Tuesday night, I have to go out and celebrate again, it's an unwritten law.

Ah, fark it. St. Pat's day comes only once a year. We have 20 lbs. of corned beef, with cabbage, potatoes and carrots to eat after marching, and I'm sure that will offset any damage done. I'll air out my liver next week.

Saint Patrick's day is my favorite holiday. Hope all of you have fun. Erin go braugh!
