Awesome.

Chet is being very laid back in this one.

Those "better guitarists" wouldn't be here today without these guys, 00.

So only the best of the best makes it to Fark?

Why don't you submit some of these better guitarists instead of sitting there and just telling us of their existence?

Sorry, you've gone F.R. there.

I'd bet both of those guys would laugh their asses off if you told them they were better than Lester and Chester.

Young guitarists take note: These two guys could play any fuggin thing they wanted to - they could both RIP - up and down the neck AND picking with the left - and on this cut they chose to play slowly and simply, because that was the song.

Technique as a means to an end, not as the end itself.

And Paisley's very good, but he's no Albert Lee or Brent Mason or Johnny Highland. And he sure as crap ain't no Chet Atkins.

/ better guitarists, like better cheese, a matter of taste.

Mad Mark 2009-03-14 07:18:38 PM
IIRC, I thought i'd read somewhere that Les Paul himself claimed he wasn't much of a guitar player, he just liked tinkering with guitars. Could've fooled me.

Buttknuckle 2009-03-14 07:24:37 PM
why did I read that as Clay Aken and Ru Paul?

Neither guy was showing off, but they could wipe the floor with Paisley, or Haner, and I'm sure that Paisley and Haner would readilly admit it.

It wasn't a very good song to judge Atkins or Paul by, because they're both phenominal players.

mctom 2009-03-14 08:05:48 PM
It's absolutely ridiculous to say that there are better guitarists than these two. For one, they are both masters, which means they play at the highest level you can play at-- it also means that anyone coming along later builds on what they did. For instance, maybe Lenny Breau is more sophisticated (harmonically, melodically, etc) than Chet Atkins but he is in the direct lineage of Chet. A master surpasses his elders, but can never be 'better' because a) that isn't what its about b)you can't compete in a time to which you didn't belong. Just like Coltrane is not 'better' than Lester Young.

Maybe. Depending on your taste. But if you do your homework, you'll find that Les Paul is the single most influential inventor, artist and inovator in the history of recorded music. The dude invented electric guitars, reverb and multi-track recording in his garage.

TommyymmoT [TotalFark] 2009-03-14 08:06:29 PM
Chet Atkins guitar playing is good, but I didn't much care for his diet plan.

Les Paul's wife makes some mighty fine fish sticks though.

To be fair, he had a little help from his friends. Do the names Paul Bigsby and Leo Fender ring a bell?

Just beautiful.
That said, my Les Paul story is that I knew his son, good guy but had a lot of issues. The last time I saw him was when they locked him up in Bergen Pines, Jersey. At that time he was batshiat crazy (because of his father), and was trying to suck the window.
/I did pick up a girl in the parking lot and had a...how can you say it...a weekend of fun.

Techincally, Les didn't invent the electric guitar.

What he was invent/perfect the 'hum bucking' pick-up that made
electrics playable. And from what I remember he didn't patent the
hum bucker, either; must have lost a fortune, too.

Helluva guy, met him once.

A master guitar player/inventor who tells off-color jokes when he performs.
What more could you ask for?

Yes, of course. I was just exagerating my point, possibly while tying an onion to my belt... which was the style at the time. Anybody else remember this classic TV commercial featuring Les? Link (new window)

wow, It seems I have stepped on sacred ground. OK, I know a few things about guitar and guitar playing, so I'm not dissing Atkins and Les Paul at all. I'm just saying, like everything ever, humans get better at it with time.I understand influences but the saying "without _____ there wouldn't be ______" does not make them better, just first.

I have submitted a few playing articles with guitarists I think are more talented, they get redlighted because of Mod's preconceived notions of that person or band.

00ghost27: OK, I know a few things about guitar and guitar playing,

It's not about how fast you can move your fingers over the frets, it's about how your playing affects the listener. How evocative is their playing? Sure, that kid that played Pachelbel's Canon in D on the electric guitar was pretty good, but it didn't make me feel anything.

I never ever said speed was the key, I'm plenty aware of inflection. John Frusciante being my favorite guitarist is an indication of that much

I'm sorry, and I agree that those are two of the most influential and talented guitarists and all, but...

THAT CLIP WAS AWFUL.

First, there's that terrible, hokey, muzak-ey backing track. Then Les is all over the place, hits more than a few clunkers. And then Chet comes in, tries awkwardly for a minute to accompany, then gives up and walks away.

Sorry, no guitar genius, but I've seen/heard them both play a lot better than that. Perhaps that's why there's so much confusion about who's more talented than whom.

theurge14 2009-03-14 11:42:45 PM
That was not a good clip of Les Paul. I like his guitars, I like Les but his gymnastic moves there were bleah. Can the guy ever play a song without showing how fast he can slide up the fretboard?

boluke01 2009-03-14 11:44:54 PM

Chet Atkins was one of greatest producers in country music history, and one of the best melodic/country studio guitar musicians of all time, maybe the best country studio musician of all time period.

His solo work is commendable and fun, but he was certainly at his best as a producer and on guitar backing up the likes of Jim Reeves, Dolly Parton, Mark Knopfler, Jerry Reed, Waylon Jennings, Bobby Bare among many, many others.

I love listening to him play with anyone or by himself. Thanks for that subby. Made an otherwise boring, rainy day better.

Les can be credited with inventing not only the solidbody electric guitar, but also multitrack recording, truly a genius and pioneer.

That said, 00 shouldn't be picked on too much, Is Michael Phelps not faster than Mark Spitz? Every achievement is eventually bested.

I read a roundtable interview with Les, Joe Satriani, and Zakk Wylde, and Les seemed quite pleased and honored that others have built upon, maybe even surpassed what he did.

What cracks me up is that Les plays a guitar so radically customized it barely resembles his namesake gibson instrument.

actually they couldnt. chet was way more versatile than les. les paul has contributed GREATLY to guitar and recording. but hes always sucked as a guitar player. hes sloppy and very distasteful.

eddie lang owned both these guys before they ever dreamed of touching a guitar. so did django. i understand its not a contest. but cmon-les paul? dude has always been terrible as a guitarist.

mahavishnunj 2009-03-15 02:53:33 AM
not to mention, the only time les paul has been clean is when he sped himself up which is f*cking retarded no matter who you ask.

tetzy 2009-03-15 03:03:20 AM
Douchy to quote myself, but it's relevant. As I said in a Sunday Heavy Metal Housecall thread:

2 Weeks in a row, more 40yr-old failures that haven't moved beyond their seventh grade guitar lessons.

The natural progression of the electric guitarist:

1: Power chords, lessons in jr.high school - impress girls.
2: Heavy Metal band - impress bar skanks.
3: Jazz noodling - impress educated, quality Women.
4: Years dedicated to Chet Atkins/Les Paul licks, growing technique and musicality - impress guitarists.

Of course, you could skip steps 2 through 5, rip off Albert Lee and go country.

Kill the distortion and play.
