I wonder if it might not be a bad idea to have a meet and greet with the central pa farkers....no particular reason.

That's an interesting read. And this is going to turn into a gun porn thread. So, with that in mind...

The Rules of a Gunfight

1. Forget about knives, bats and fists. Bring a gun. Preferably, bring at least two guns. Bring all of your friends who have guns. Bring four times the ammunition you think you could ever need.

2. Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Ammunition is cheap - life is expensive. If you shoot inside, buckshot is your friend. A new wall is cheap - funerals are expensive

3. Only hits count. The only thing worse than a miss is a slow miss.

4. If your shooting stance is good, you're probably not moving fast enough or using cover correctly.

5. Move away from your attacker and go to cover. Distance is your friend. (Bulletproof cover and diagonal or lateral movement are preferred.)

6. If you can choose what to bring to a gunfight, bring a semi or full-automatic long gun and a friend with a long gun.

7. In ten years nobody will remember the details of caliber, stance, or tactics. They will only remember who lived.

8. If you are not shooting, you should be communicating, reloading, and running. Yell "Fire!" Why "Fire"? Cops will come with the Fire Department, sirens often scare off the bad guys, or at least cause then to lose concentration and will.... and who is going to summon help if you yell "Intruder," "Glock" or "Winchester?"

9. Accuracy is relative: most combat shooting standards will be more dependent on "pucker factor" than the inherent accuracy of the gun.

10. Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.

11. Stretch the rules. Always win. The only unfair fight is the one you lose.

12. Have a plan.

13. Have a back-up plan, because the first one won't work. "No battle plan ever survives 10 seconds past first contact with an enemy."

14. Use cover or concealment as much as possible, but remember, sheetrock walls and the like stop nothing but your pulse when bullets tear through them.

15. Flank your adversary when possible. Protect yours.

16. Don't drop your guard.

17. Always tactical load and threat scan 360 degrees. Practice reloading one-handed and off-hand shooting. That's how you live if hit in your "good" side.

18. Watch their hands. Hands kill. Smiles, frowns and other facial expressions don't (In God we trust. Everyone else keep your hands where I can see them.)

19. Decide NOW to always be aggressive ENOUGH, quickly ENOUGH.

20. The faster you finish the fight, the less shot you will get.

21. Be polite. Be professional. But, have a plan to kill everyone you meet if necessary, because they may want to kill you.

22. Be courteous to everyone, overly friendly to no one.

23. Your number one option for personal security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.

24. Do not attend a gunfight with a handgun, the caliber of which starts with anything smaller than "4".

25. Use a gun that works EVERY TIME. "All skill is in vain when an Angel blows the powder from the flintlock of your musket." At a practice session, throw you gun into the mud, then make sure it still works. You can clean it later.

26. Practice shooting in the dark, with someone shouting at you, when out of breath, etc.

27. Regardless of whether justified of not, you will feel sad about killing another human being. It is better to be sad than to be room temperature.

28. The only thing you EVER say afterwards is, "He said he was going to kill me. I believed him. I'm sorry, Officer, but I'm very upset now. I can't say anything more. Please speak with my attorney."

Welcome to several years ago Fark.com. I've had several copies of this guide printed out for quite awhile. Heck, several of us have linked to it here on Fark.

Though I suppose it becomes (not) newsworthy with the crisis in the US.

Anyway, thus guy has some extremely good practical insight. After reading his experiences I made an effort to find a good autoloader 9mm to compliment my revolvers. In this case I got a Ruger P-89. With my PC-9 I have ammo and magazine interchangeability.

My boys' Scout Troop has always insisted that on at least 1-2 campouts per year we don't take the stoves & only minimal kitchen equipment. Cooking over a fire/charcoal with a dutch oven & a frying pan is a good skill to have in many situations.

Some of the "outfitting for shtf" money should go towards good camping gear. If the power goes out for an extended period (week+ as it did last year), life is much more comfortable if you have a camp stove & lanterns that you can quickly get out for your period of urban camping.

I stopped reading when he started bashing 9mm and .223 as ineffective compared to the alternatives.

I've shot enough things over the years that I can say, for an absolute, ironclad certainty, that shot placement is 99% of the equation. And I haven't met anyone who's trained enough, or even simply a good enough shot, that they need to worry about 9mm v. .40 or .45.

Unless you're in .50 BMG territory and up, stopping power is a myth.

This article has been making the rounds for some time and commenters from the guy's country do not recognise their home country and home town. It is a product of someone with an overactive imagination, although there are probably grains of thruth in it.

thereadlines [TotalFark] 2009-03-14 09:17:25 PM
Through analysis of thousands of recorded gunfights, I have determined that the geometric distribution of antagonists in any gun battle is a statistically-predictable element. The Gun Kata treats the gun as a total weapon, each fluid position representing a maximum kill zone, inflicting maximum damage on the maximum number of opponents, while keeping the defender clear of the statistically-traditional trajectories of return fire. By the rote mastery of this art, your firing efficiency will rise by no less than 120%. The difference of a 63% increased lethal proficiency makes the master of the Gun Katas an adversary not to be taken lightly.

BTW, the fastest way to bring about an economic collapse is to convince large groups of people it's about to happen.

Yeah, that movie cracked me up. He can shoot a dozen armed men dead in a dark room without receiving a single wound? So cool that I peed, sure, but absolutely ridiculous at the same time.

Oh, and my advice for surviving TSHTF scenarios? As any concealed carry permit holder should be able to tell you: SITUATION AVOIDANCE. So: don't elect cock-ass leaders who will screw your country's economy and justice system down the toilet. The Chinese are not going to invade, Somali pirates are not going to run amok in the streets. If TSHTF it will HTF from within, and that can be prevented if you all use your damn brains come election time. Ballot box before ammo box, remember?

Jonathan Hohensee 2009-03-14 09:31:27 PM
I am pretty sure a lot of these TSHTF types spends a lot of time hoping that the S would actually HTF, that way they could both prove their mettle and engage in the manly "save the day" scenarios that they have been fantasizing about ever since they bought their first gun.

Of course, when the shiat actually does hit the fan, they would immediately be eaten by a bear.

MadAmos [TotalFark] 2009-03-14 09:31:35 PM
I read the article, seems like its a bit overblown. The essential core of disaster planning is to "Hope for the best, plan for the worst and practice your plan."

Not everyone is an evil person waiting to kill you and take your stuff, but the quickest way to find out if they are is to be vulnerable.

If you are comfortable with guns, then they should form part of your plan. If not - then they shouldn't.

I keep a small kit of emergency supplies in my desk at work, a slightly larger kit in my car's trunk and a packed duffel bag of supplies at home. I'm not a person who hopes for some horrible disaster/attack etc... I hope very much nothing ever disturbs my happy videogame/fark filled life. If it does however, I want to be one of the survivors and not one of the bodies cleaned up after its over.

Yeah. Another bit of stupid was when he talked about getting his wisdom teeth removed. He decided to suffer through the pain just so he could save the "high-strength" ibuprofen for a later emergency.

Of course, that ibuprofen is only going to be good for a couple years on the shelf, and it's no different than what you can buy in the store - just more per pill. Take the damn stuff the doc gives you, and buy a few boxes at the store for emergencies.

Some above comments are accurate, things would have to degrade a heck of a lot here in the U.S to hit the levels described in the article, and it seems unlikely that the drop would too quickly for someone paying attention, especially since the media likes to make a big deal about even small stories.

With that said, one can never go wrong by setting aside some supplies and a plan. In my opinion though, leaving the guns aside as a separate issue, having some emergency gear for a storm/power outage/etc would be the starting point, and if you want to invest further in depth that's up to you.

Living here in hurricane land, I can see some of the truth in what was written. Even if it was overblown.

Ike was my first and the eye passed right over my apartment. I was lucky in having nice cool weather the following week when the power was out. The first two days after the storm we were told very clearly, "if we left town, we would not be allowed to reenter." No looking for ice, food, water, botox, nothing. I didn't have much in my freezer to lose but water was much shorter than expected. Of course, I had originally planned to evac but the cats decided against that.

Hindsight being what it is, if I'd had my camping gear, that week would have been a whole lot more pleasant than it was. Sitting on the balcony with a book, a cool breeze, and a grilled steak would have been much better than just a book and a cool breeze.

I purchased some things to be ready for the next time, like a wapon for confusion. Read; CO2 BB gun. Never underestimate the power of confusion to gain the upper hand, and they hurt like hell at close range. Next will be a real weapon, and I'll follow the advice of my new neighbors, buy something cheap that you won't mind losing. As it turns out, if you shoot somebody with it, the cops take it for evidense so don't use that hard to find combat proven Vietnam era 1911.

A generator for next season is at the top of the list. I won't need something big enough to run the air conditioner or refrigerator, but a fan and a radio would be nice.

The things you really want to take away FTA is, be prepared and don't live someplace where the entire country is going to collapse.

No Such Agency: The Chinese are not going to invade

They'll just cash in their trillion dollars of US Bonds. When we can't meet that obligation, the US dollar will collapse and so will the nation. The Chinese have already "voiced concern" about our future debt and the viability of our bonds.

This bit of information needs to get out more. This is several orders of magnitude more serious than the current economic crisis and the current plan of "throw a few trillion dollars at fixes of questionable value" is going to bring out the far worse crises.

The attorney got construction supplies stolen and thought this was reason enough to kill them if he caught them.
