What the hell? That sounds nothing like the Fountains of Wayne song.

Pfft. Knock yourself out.

Parts of that gave me shivers. Good one, submitter.
So what day of the week is JazzDay again?

I'm 2 for 5 on the jazz links the last 2 days...got some Jessica Williams in the pipe that I just submitted, but odds aren't good on a Saturday night.

But hope y'all enjoy!flaminglip: Oh, and if you ever want to hear Coltrane completely unhinged, try finding this

I have that...when I really want to zone out I have a bit of smoke, go sit on the back patio, look at the stars and put that on.
Just recently got his Kulu Se Mama-nice playing on that as well.

Came for a reference to Christopher Walken.
Left disappointed.

Also, I would like to thank subby for this find. It's unbelievable .

Amen.

I now must find a better-quality recording of this track.

I don't pay the fiver but that sure is a solid idea. Maybe the payin' folk can make that happen.

/Music tab sportin' quality threads too! Les Paul and Chet Atkins duet win. More please.
//goin' to hit You Tube

Doubt it-there's probably not enough of us to make it happen. But I'll email Drew and bounce the idea off of him for a greenlit jazz thread weekly, anyway.
Damn...my Jessica Williams, and Annie Ross didn't make it tonight.. Well, I'll try again tomorrow!

For anyone interested, KCSM (available online) has just started their Saturday night prgramming-tonight features Cole Porter songs.

You mean TFers get preference on submissions, just because they pay 5 bucks a month? That explains my problem getting greenlit.

We don't get preference...at least, I sure as hell don't-1200 submissions in 5 years, 65 greens.
Although, as we see many more links, you can start to get a feel for what stories with what worded titles might work; and certain times of day, or certain days some things might work.
For example-I posted a total of 9 jazz links in the past 2 days, got 2 greens (jazz links tend to do better late night)...and an hour ago switchhed up and posted Patsy Cline's "Crazy", which will hit the music tab at 4:31 a.m.

But for me, it's still pretty much about a 5% success rate; I really don't care much about greens, I just try to post interesting, or informative, or weird stuff. Although I do take some joy in getting jazz through, as there's fewer of us jazz fans here.

Googling around a bit indicates that this was a Jazz at the Philharmonic show from March 1960 and it's the only known Getz and Coltrane joint effort.

Other late Coltrane you don't want to be without:

First Meditations (the very last recording with the Quartet, not to be confused with 'Meditations')-- contemplative, joyful, bluesy, ferocious... everything is there.

Sun Ship-- Lot of wildness, but some great ballads, too.

Transition -- Jazz suites, the solos keep getting better and better....!!!

/I'm submitting some of my favorite jazz videos tomorrow!!

Think of Coltrane as a gateway drug to the jazz world.

mfaby 2009-03-15 01:42:59 PM
Nice stuff.

And to think that Stan Getz went from this to fantastic West Coast jazz and bossa nova to playing on Huey Lewis' 'Hip to be Square'.

and no, I'm not ripping him

I didn't; I was just thinking of quartet records in a similar vein. Interstellar Space is one of my favorite records of all time...

(and if you like that, check out John Gross/Billy Mintz "Beautiful You")

Yeah, I like Oscar Peterson too. Him and Chick Corea are piano dudes that I can listen to forever. ..and Monk, Herbie Hancock, hmmm.. maybe I like piano almost as much as guitar players.

I've never heard Stan Getz burn like that before. All I ever heard from Him is that schmoozy elevator-muzik. I'm a new Stan Getz fan.

GibbyTheMole 2009-03-16 08:28:36 AM
Terrific, swinging version of that tune. Love it! Not a weak link in the group anywhere.

pipco:

"I've never heard Stan Getz burn like that before. All I ever heard from Him is that schmoozy elevator-muzik."

Yeah, Getz was a terrific player. The earlier recordings are the burners. He started mellowing out around 1960 or so. He did some killer stuff in the 70s & 80s, too. The guy's always been great.

By the way - for you Oscar Peterson fans, go check out the album "Nigerian Marketplace". It's awesome.

I had heard members of FoW were Farkers -- I never expected any of them to show up in a thread and admit it, though.

Rock on!

I sat together in period one, fridays at 8:15 with Coltrane, so I'm getting a kick...etc etc
