I thought that Japan said they would shoot it down if it passed over Japan...

It sure is going to be interesting.

If this launch goes as planned, it will be shot down by Japan if it gets even relatively close to Japan's airspace.

I would wager that the U.S. would even help Japan take that sucker down.

FTA: Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada said to reporters Friday morning, "Whatever it may be, we're determined to cope adequately with any incoming projectile toward this country, as we're prepared to deal with any contingency."

I'd say things look like they could go out-of-control pretty quickly.

The U.S. would have to help. Japan's constitution forbids them from even defending themselves.

Wouldn't surprise me if the USAF "loaned" the Japanese AF an ASM-135 ASAT to give it an "operational test".

Or maybe the JAF have developed their own ASAT. They certainly seemed clear enough last week when they said the retained the right to shoot it down. The phrase "shoot it down" is not semantically equal to "send a strongly worded letter"... ;)

I LOL when I think of Kim Jong-il stamping his foot when he learns that the JAF shot down his missile.

Also, shut up.

Cue scary music, tin-foil hat, or laugh:

Connecting the dots between the launch site (orange triangle) and the two danger zones where the two stages will splash (red triangles), we can see where the missile could head --- again, according to the North Koreans themselves:

* They indeed plan to overfly Japan, shedding the first booster in the Sea of Japan.

* Depending on the range of the missile, the trajectory is making a bee-line for Hawaii.

(source)

But the real axis of evil; Limbaugh, Coulter, and Hannity scares me more.

It would sure surprise me, seeing as that's outdated 1970's era tech. I wouldn't want to be the pilot firing a 20+ year old motor from my aircraft...

If the Japanese decide to do something, it would probably be with a Navy-launched SM-3. They already have the ships and missiles, but I wouldn't be surprised if some help from US assets (like radar, intel) is needed.

Can we notify North Korea that we will be testing JDAMs on their launch facilities?

The UN is basically useless when it can't or won't do jack shiat to reign in evil nations like North Korea.

I wonder if the evil bastards who are running North Korea could ever be bought out for a few hundred million dollars. That may sound like a lot, but it's a lot cheaper than having a war to oust them.

Where in god's name did you study international politics? Japan has the finest self-defense force in the world, on a par with most countries' armed forces.

The only thing they can't do is go to war OUTSIDE their borders.

Befuddled: The UN is basically useless when it can't or won't do jack shiat to reign in evil nations like North Korea. it's tied hands and feet by asshole nations with veto rights.

FTFY

Now you can either have capability to do something, or capability to do the few things that doesn't pose some sort of a problem for the United States, United Kingdom, France, China or Russia, where "pose a problem" includes things such as issuing carte blanche to do whatever they want to neighboring countries, weapons trade, general trade, or merely something embarrassing about strange shipments of weapons that really shouldn't be in that particular theater, or in some cases shipments that tends to set of Geiger counters.

Yeah, that's the one I was thinking of, but I found the 135 first, so ran with it. Point being that I wouldn't be surprised if the Japanese took matters into their own hands. We certainly wouldn't put up with anyone launching ICBMs over our country. Why should they?

You are correct. (Copy and paste because fark does not like this link for some reason)

I'd imagine if there is anyone that is skittish about the idea of ballistic missile tests that can potential contain nuclear warheads, it would be Japan.

Ed Willy 2009-03-14 08:49:12 PM
And if those "satellites" were to contain materials of a "certain nature" it might cause some effect on the native sea life.

DefCon is awesome. I just don't like to play anymore because the griefers complain when I micro manage my ship-to-ship battles.

I play as "Mr. Rollins" if for ever see me.

North Korea can be midwife to the rebirth of the Imperial Japanese Army.

I love how the only communication North Korea ever has is some weirdo announcement then they stop all talks.

NK: WE WILL LAUNCH ROCKETS BEWARE WHEN THEY FAIL AN FALL ON YOU!
World: Wait, what are you doing? Hang on a sec what are you even doing over there?
NK: IGNORE ME!!!!
