Something similar happened to my schoolbus once. The school bus was on its afternoon route when the back right wheel fell right off, rolling wildly off the street, thankfully not killing anyone. The bus slid along the pavement for quite a distance, leaving a big rusty gauge. This was the days before cellphones were common, so we had to wait awhile to be picked up by another bus. Apparently the nuts on the wheels had come loose. I don't remember the story making the paper, or any investigation about it.

Now I am old, and so I have the privilege of telling stories like this that have no point or humour. I am also getting a kick out of these replies...

The exact same thing happened to an MLVW from my old reserve unit. The first rear axle just came clean off, the second set of wheels tried to climb over it. Not good. Fortunately, nobody hurt.
