FTA: "I've been in this business a long time," says Andy, "and I have to tell you, that was really something. The little guy's mom certainly had tears in her eyes."

Bet lots of people did. Inspiring.

That is so awesome. I wish I had the money to do something like that for someone.

Other bidders followed suit, till at the end of the sale mom and her little guy had a fair amount of their stuff back.

I guess some people there were a little less inspired.

Too bad.

Legally do they have to pay income taxes on the value of these things? Cuz if so, that just demonstrates how f'ed up our tax system is.

Manhigh: Legally do they have to pay income taxes on the value of these things? Cuz if so, that just demonstrates how f'ed up our tax system is.

I would doubt it. At the moment someone bought the stuff, it became theirs. They then gifted it back to the woman. Unless her storage unit was holding a ton of stuff, each piece valued at over $10K, I wouldn't think that the woman would get hit with any sort of income tax. This isn't considered income. It's a gift.

Although I didn't RTFA I tend to fall onto the side of people who doesn't feel a lot of remorse for those who didn't plan reasonably for their savings vs. expenditures and are now undergoing a purging and punishment process (which by the magic of taxes is largely deferred onto those responsible enough to not have to largely endure the purging portion of that scenario)?

I have this problem. Seeing children cry. I have been at the hospital, or at a store, and I hear one ask there mom or dad.. "can I please have....?" and the parents whisper "no daddy/momma don't have the money.. and it makes me want so badly to buy the thing. It's usually like a dollar item or something, but never the less, I can't eat in front of kids if I think they are hungry, not without getting them something first.

Plato once said, "they will forget your name, they will forget your face, but the will never forget how you made them feel".

geez.. this was a good thing. who cares why the mom and kid were there, who cares about any of the peripheral really, just see the good deed performed, one that had no expectation of reward, and be glad for someone for a change...

I know sometimes on Fark here you see stories of how rotten children can be, and I see the "crotchfruit, snowflakes, ect." referrences, yet a three year old compared to so many here with such intelligence and articulating abilities is no match. Why not let the guy just enjoy having his toys, and let him be three years old for a change..and let the mom appreciate the kindness that all of us recieve at least once in our lives..

It's interesting what you can tell about a person based on the assumptions that they make when presented with a lack of information.

I'm sure there's no chance these people were burdened with any sort of unforseen expenses like medical bills or something (the #1 reason for all bankruptcy cases). It was probably just a lack of "personal fiscal responsibility."

Also, according to TFA, it wasn't even a bankruptcy auction. It was a storage space contents auction.

We had a regular in the local auction circuit that would use a small child to place bids on items she had to have. Gave her a max price and told her to go for it. She'd walk up right in front of the auctioneer so she could be seen and heard(and so everyone could see her.)

The other regulars knew her trick, but she won almost every time. Do you know how much of an asshole you look to everyone else outbidding a sweet little 6-year-old dressed in her Sunday best?

That is totally awesome. Now I feel kind of like a douche. The neighbors were recently foreclosed on and left their place about two weeks ago. Although I mowed their yard today and cleaned up piles of trash the classless bastards left in their yard when they left I did sort of take advantage of the situation. Since they abandoned everything I wandered into their backyard and acquired: a garden hose, four planters, and 2 bags of charcoal. I am contemplating acquiring a very nice barbeque they left behind but I figure I will wait a week or two to see if they show up to grab it. Oddly enough they left the rear sliding door wide open and there is clearly still a small amount of crap inside. I didnt go so far as to go inside and just ended up closing the back door so the neighborhood cats and birds dont take over the house. Now I am worried that I might have shut a kitty inside. I suspect they abandoned one when they left. I guess I will have to go back over and crack the rear door open.

/Thank you. I have been apart of this website for three years now, and it never fails when someone comes in here and based solely upon assumptive diatribe, assail or berate the one receiving kindness as either beggars, losers, idiots who cannot handle money, or liars for gain. It is the single biggest problem I have with many farkers here. They take nothing into consideration sometimes, or don't even read TFA, and splot down some stupidity containing only vestigial words to create an atomosphere that will either have someone reply to them, or get others to jump on the bandwagon. I realize there are those out there that do these sorts of things to get stuff out of people, but hells bells man, not all of them do.

Usually, when I see one of them do that, it makes it clear to me that this person's life is in tatters, or they have nothing better to do than judge another human based on pure assumption. Seems that sometimes, persons here grow into the very people they wish to make fun of.

What's your source? I'd love to take a look at it, and I'm serious. The last study I saw had roughly 50% of bankruptcies attributed to medical expenses.

//I suppose you can also assume from my post that I don't allocate a large part of my life saving uninsured emergency and trauma patients either, right?

What does insurance or lack thereof had to do anything? The reason cited was "medical expenses" not "lack of insurance. If you honestly believe that "insurance" is some sort of magical thing that will pay for everything, you've never had any experience with it beyond medical/dental/vision routine checkups.

Hint: Medical shiat can get expensive fast, even with killer insurance.

Some Farkers assumed that the woman was foreclosed upon.

The housing market in Canada is quite different from the U.S. And so is the mortgage market.

There actually are very few foreclosures in Canada.

When one's storage locker contents are sold, however, it is next to homelessness.

Also, there is no indication that the goods in the article were purchased on credit.

"People back home will be vexed with us. . .and many here on Terra would die. Have you read Malthus?"

"Don't think so."

"Many would die. Then a new stability would be reached with somewhat more people--more efficient people and better fed. This planet isn't crowded; it is just mismanaged. . . and the unkindest thing you can do for a hungry man is to give him food, 'Give.' Read Malthus. It is never safe to laugh at Dr. Malthus; he always has the last laugh. A depressing man, I'm glad he's dead. . ."

I wasn't presented with a lack of information. The posts were information plenty. That said, who is more of a "self-righteous, smug a$$hole," me, or the people going

"ha, ha, look at the poor people who couldn't pay their bills! Stupid poor people, they probably made a rash of bad decisions that led them to deserving their current situation! There's absolutely no possible way someone out of their control happened! If only they were as smart and fiscally responsible as ME they would have no problems!"

I don't see what that has to do with anything. I made no assumptions about this family either way based on the lack of information. I was just commenting on those who immediately assumed the worst. If you disagree with me, that's cool too.

The Homer Tax, to really distill what I mean. The point of what I am saying is that you attacked me by doing the very same thing you were attempting to condemn me for. This establishes you as a hypocrite.

Then, to make myself feel even better I followed up by establishing that I am a better person than you because not only do I work with these people directly, but I do it often times pro bono. So not only do I know more about this issue first hand than you, but I work to make the situation better in a very direct way. This is pretty much so a free license to gripe about it in any way I want.

Hint: When you bill patients for your medical service you know more about medical expenses than armchair doctors on Fark.

what the hell does that have to do with it. He was right. Assumptions made when TFA never mentioned the circumstance surrounding the loss of the storage space. Homer wasn't judging you, not nearly the way this lady and her child have been, he was pointing out that a comment was made in a vacuum of information. Here's something for you.. no matter why this person lost these items, it was clear that there were decent people here doing decent things for this lady and her son, so why not let the three year old play with his toys, and let the lady appreciate the kindness shown to her without judging why she lost anything to begin with. I have been that person once before, on both sides, and I assure you that my loss came due to the loss of health, and my deed came from the axiom of paying it forward..

now, how would you judge me?

No kidding. I was in the hospital last week for one night. I just received my bill for $10,000. For ONE day in the hospital. Bunch of tests, that's it. My insurance will cover- at most- 80% of that. So I've got to come up with at least $2,000 out of thin air. YAAAY.
