Congress is accustomed to spending money, which it gladly did when Obama asked.

At a closed-door briefing of the House Democratic Caucus on Thursday, lawmakers asked Orszag to justify the Obama proposals to curb mortgage interest deductions for upper-income people and to reduce farm subsidies-two of the most sacred cows in Washington.

Repeal the mortgage interest deduction for all people, even reliable Democrat voters.

Change farm subsidies to price insurance.

I do love how they can't seem to just rent a conference room at the Holiday Inn for meetings and conferences like the rest of us. They have to go to Cancun or Hawaii, because their business is so important and vital it's the only way they can get people to show up.

The House of Representatives and the Senate do far more damage to this country than whoever's living at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, no matter what party he belongs to. Anyone who can't see that is blind.

Great, so Obama tries to do too much at once and thats someone elses fault? Congress is the same organization it's always been, and its even one thats tilted to his end of the spectrum and he still cant work with them?

I know i'll be dismissed a Whargarble but thats Obamas faliure to do his job.

Repealing the interest deduction would completely crash the housing market. Much more so than has already happened, plus force a lot of the people who have actually have been paying on time to default. That's one of the dumbest ideas I have ever heard.

Notice that Obama is in 'tactical retreat' about certain things, such as the earmarks.
Of course now he gets blamed for breaking a campaign promise by signing an earmark laden bill into law, when it was done as a compromise for these twits in congress (Dems and Repubs included).

I laughed at Bill O'Reilly's opening segment last night when he said Obama's popularity is lower than Bush's at the same point in their Presidency, so Obama is already becoming unpopular. Jeebus, Obama's only been in office less than two months.

Then O'Reilly followed that up with the accusation of a Secret Liberal Cabal meeting held at 8:45am every day. Part of the meeting was to identify enemies of the Obama White House, and punish those enemies accordingly. Well it's not like Dubya ever had a list of favored and not favored media people, right?

Then Bill followed up all these wild and unconfirmed accusations by having Karl Rove give commentary. That's when I switched channels, because if there's anyone who's less qualified to complain about political dirty tricks, that would be Rove.

You're begging the question. Why is it 'too much'? If it's 'too much' just because Congress won't do it, then you're simply deciding that Congress is right. And that, my friend, is not a place you generally want to be.

Obama is serious about his job. There is no question about that. Only time will tell if all his policies work. I think they will. He's been planning this shiat for a while and doing it meticulously.

I like Obama and am proud that I voted for someone that is trying to do the farking job they were elected to do.

The D's have massive majorities in both houses - to the point where they don't even need the support of every single one of their more conservative members to pass a bill on anything that doesn't require a 2/3rds vote.

You can say basically anything you want about the R's right now - from their stupid infighting to their moronic selection of certain people as "leaders" - but if nothing gets done in this legislative session, or if the "wrong" things happen and turn out to be bad ideas, there is absolutely no one to blame but the D's - they have all the power right now and they know it. I remains to be seen what becomes of it.

That may be what the economy needs. Less action by government, let business make the corrections. You know, if O can just defer even getting his admin in place for another 8 months (he seems like he could anyways) the 'recovery' might just take place on its own.

The bad business's go down, the strong survive. Get away from these crutches.

It's too late for the giant globs of pork that Pelosi needed to get shipped to her friends. That money is gone... now just let Congress go on break for a year.
Obama will get outfitted for a new sized teleprompter which may take a year... for the new technology that actually just speaks for him, while moving his lips to the beat. He does pretty bad when not in front of one....

O go to Hawaii for a long time.

Congress go back to sleep, the money is spent. You maxed nations credit cards.

I'm not trying to be argumentative but their majorities are WAY larger than when the R's had both houses - the senate by, what, one vote? And yet somehow the R's managed to "ram legislation down the throats of..."

I guess my basic point is this - if everything that happened in the last 8 years is Bush's fault, even when he didnt have voting majorities in Congress, then now its the D's turn. Time to behave like grown ups, because it is going to be very hard to sell the idea to the public that anything that happens legislatively from January on isnt their "fault" if it turns out shiatty.

I loved this one, and thought it was stupid of Obama to jump on the bandwagon.

Earmarks are irrelevant. Making hay of it is cliche.

I wonder how many people have checked out how and why we will be studying pig farm odor? For those of you who have never been near one, the stench can be pretty strong. Is there a cost associated with that smell? Does that cost end up hurting us a lot when we buy our delicious pork chops? It possible or likely that we will learn something that will pay off in other industries, or will an unexpected breakthrough that will have far reaching consequences?

Maybe this is just a cleverly concealed maneuver to put some cash in someones pocket. I'm sure that happens, these are politicians. But more likely someone spent a bunch of time putting together a proposal. If it's anything like writing a grant, he did his homework and demonstrated potential.

Bohemian 2009-03-14 10:39:52 AM
Of for fark sake. The republicans that are left about half of them has made it their job to cause as much chaos as possible on a daily basis.

Most of the Dems who ran for their seats this last year were jumping onto what Obama was touting during their campaigns. So now they are freaking out about details in these bills out of fear of voter rebellion. Maybe they need to start looking at who and how many are complaining before they panic? If it is lobbyists complaining screw them. If it is your republican voters complaining and the same stance has been said on Faux News or Rush screw them, they probably didn't vote for you anyways. If it is your dem voters how many are really complaining? If your getting significant numbers complaining out of those that voted for you or a good sized combination of both camps THEN think about changing your vote.

Maybe we need to send them a nice flow chart printed on a big poster board. Or shock collars. Everyone in Congress should have one installed.

In the end most of it probably does end up being that they are just not used to having to actually work that much.

He's also the worst human being in existence due to him saying before that the economy was in big trouble and then he DARED to try and say recently that its not as bad so the country didn't get pessimistic and miserable (judging by how outraged some of the Fark Independents were in yesterday's thread).

Ah yes, if I had a dollar for every time a Fark Independent(TM) screamed they were only voting for a Republican because they believed a deadlocked Congress was what was best for America I would be able to pay off the deficit.

At what point do we begin to understand that the people who are intentionally trying to tank the country are giving aid and comfort to our enemies? These people should be brought up on charges of treason.

All it takes is two people - and I am one.
Anyone else wish to become the second?
