Public school teachers are terrible people. It's one thing to get into a profession that you cannot possible know has nefarious motives, it's another thing entirely to be willfully ignorant of the fact that what you do was created and designed to damage and ruin the lives and futures of children.

To willfully take part in Government education is tantamount to child abuse. It is an institution that from it's point of concept was intended to keep the poor poor and the rich rich.

Way to strengthen and protect the oligarchy Public school teachtards.

While I agree with your point about education in this country, I think most teachers, who are also a product of this same corrupt education system, go in thinking they are doing something good. Most get broken down during their first few years of having to teach only for standardized tests.

That one's gonna work - I gotta give it at least an 8 maybe an 8.5/10 - aw hell its a 3 day weekend for me because I'm a teacher and we have a comp day on monday (*heads asplode*) - so I am in a generous mood - grade inflation will take that to a 9.4/10 which will get you an "A" in my district. Congrats!

Public school teachers suck.
Sure, there's a good one here and there, but it doesn't matter once the student leaves the class and is exposed to the rest.

You were genetically stupid due to having stupid parents. Don't try to blame it on unions and teachers or teachers' unions. Blame your parents for a) producing a stupid kid and b) not being smart enough to help their stupid kid. Personal responsibility: you won't take any.

As the product of a public education in a middle-class, mostly blue-collar area (not the best schools but at least we didn't have metal detectors), I have to say that I never met a teacher who didn't legitimately want to help students learn. I'm not saying some of them weren't burnt out or way past their prime or just plain assholes, but I never met someone who became a teacher just because they would get summers off.

Most of the problems with U.S. eduction are institutional and philosphical. Blaming the teachers is like getting pissed at a baseball player because he can't hit a homerun with a tennis racquet.

cirby 2009-03-14 10:55:27 AM
Teachers mostly don't suck.

It's the other 50% or so of the people working for the school system who bring the average down. If you didn't have all of those people adding their own restrictions to what teachers can and can't do, you'd have much better results.

Schwarzenegger is just as bad as the rest of 'em...if not worse. He's the one that ran in part on making education a priority, and then raided school funding. In fact, public schools basically allowed him to attempt a budget-balancing move by borrowing something like $4 billion from their budgets with the promise he'd put it back in later, and then he never bothered putting it back. He tried to actually undo prop 98 (guaranteed public school funding).

The guy is an asshat of the highest degree.

Many do take classes...at least the ones I work with. The rest try to save money while the paychecks aren't coming in, or find a second job, or regain their sanity before they have to deal with another batch of precious snowflakes in September.

Here in Sacramento you one of the arguments is that it will lead to bigger class sizes with 30 to 40 students per class. Funny thats how many I had in my classes growing up. Some of the best educated people I work with came from developing countries with over crowded classes and few materials. Here it seems our precious snowflakes need a private tutor and an office supply store just to be able to get a high school diploma.
A couple of years ago when they started rolling out the graduation tests, one of students who failed and could not get his diploma whined to the newspaper. "I did my time I deserve my diploma". I'm sorry but school is not prison your not serving a sentence your getting an education. The sad thing is we can't fire teachers who pass students who can not even take a simple test.

Teachers are awesome. WTF is wrong with you people? Are you still burning because the principal called your parents and told them you were smoking cigarettes on school grounds or something?

Have you met most teenagers? Can you honestly imagine spending 9 hours a day with people who think Twilight is the pinnacle of both cinema and literature, and who probably spend most of the class text messaging? I would quit within a week.

JosephFinn 2009-03-14 10:59:33 AM
CA is really shooting itself in the foot on this one; school personnel (and the cuts are not just teachers, but office staff, bus drivers and other essential personnel) should be almost the last line of firing (leaving aside things like power and water filtration). An educated populace = a strong economy.

That said, the headline gave me a good chuckle.

The attitude towards teachers in this country farking sucks.
Of all the professions, teachers should be getting paid well, and hiring only the best and brightest. Why do we pay the stock traders, the CEOs, and the politicians so much when they don't provide any tangible service or benefit commensurate with their huge paychecks?

We need to prioritize education, not marginalize it.
Farking anti-intellectuals.

zippythechimp: I never understood why the teachers have off for the summer. Just because the kids are off makes no difference. They should still come to work. Maybe take a class?

Trust me, for the teachers who really give a shiat, there is NO summer off. Ever.

Oh, and for the record, I never blamed teachers for anything. I had some amazing teachers, and I've worked with some amazing teachers. Unfortunately, when a state hires me to conduct public policy research and research supports certain conclusions that the union disagrees with, it is a waste for everyone involved. The good teachers are held back; the bad teachers are kept in a job.

But don't tell ghare that because it may ruin some fantasy of "OMG, ONLY COMPLETE TEACHER HATERS WOULD EVER CRITICIZE THE EDUCATION SYSTEM!"

Old_Chief_Scott [TotalFark] 2009-03-14 11:00:34 AM
I detest the angst displayed each year when these notices are given out. It is the teacher's union that demanded the advanced notification. When the budgets are far from finalized the districts cover their ass by putting out layoff notices.

I will also disagree with the trolls. There are a great many fine teachers in the public school system. The problem is, the poor and incompetent ones have their jobs protected by the union. Since I am rather heavily involved at my kid's schools, I know many of the teachers. I asked the principal at my daughter's school for a particular teacher for this year. When she replied that class assignments are made according to some formula, I smiled sweetly and told her that if my daughter had teacher "X" that I would make life miserable for the administration. She kind of frowned and it was obvious she knew that teacher "X" is a piece of shiat.

Because there is actually competition among one of the professions. Good teachers get paid the same as shiatty teachers, and the disdain that some of the shiatty teachers have for the good ones kills me. Some of the focus groups I've been involved with were absolutely sickening.

Do they teach the effects of Prop 13 in civics class in California to the upcoming voters of that state?
That would be a failure of the teaching establishment if they don't, no?

The_Driver 2009-03-14 11:04:34 AM
Pink Slip the students. Perhaps this will wake their snowflake ass's up and then their parents will take some responsibility with their education and not just passively give that responsibility to the state.

I recently walked my granddaughters campus the other morning and sat in on a few classes. These are no longer students, they are statistics waiting for the bell to ring.

I feel sorry for the 50% of the children that are there to learn because the other 50% have destroyed the system.

This summer I am going to a NASA workshop for teachers. I have a curriculum workshop, too. I usually garden for the cheap, fresh produce. I tutor my own kids, who are all outstanding students. Then I paint my house or build a shed or do some other sizeable project. This summer I'm roofing my house. I work on finding new science activities...the kind of labs I can do with a lab budget of $0.00. Yeah, that's what they give me for labs. I write grants to get lab equipment.

Anyone who thinks we teachers just sleep late and go to the beach all summer long knows nothing about the professsion
