Who knew a little prick could be fatal?

Yes, subby, the handful of injurious cases are surely an indictment of the entire practice of tattooing.

gopher321: Who knew a little prick could be fatal?

This.

Hooters wouldn't hire my wife as waitress because she has a small tattoo on her upper right arm. Hear that girls? If you get a tattoo you can blow an opportunity of a lifetime.

Here I was thinking this story would be about someone getting a Bad Tattoo (say, Nazi-related on the forehead) and getting beat to death over it.

As for TFA yeah, sticking needles in your skin for any reason can potentially give you an infection, which is why you should be careful. Makes me wonder about the shop, but then anyone can also get unlucky I guess.

Still, he was inactive due to the pain and then got "economy class syndrome" it sounds like, from the end of the article? If it was that painful, he maybe should have had it seen earlier, but... as always hindsight is 20/20.

Well, I expect getting involuntarily disfigured isn't all that fun either. And that deep vein thrombosis has killed quite a few people who have sat still for long trips on buses and airplanes, so better outlaw those too.

Yeah, it said he was given pain meds and Antihistamines? I'm no doctor, but wouldn't antibiotics be the thing to use?

THAT'S what my life has been missing! All this travel, art, theater, and outdoor activity, and the ONE thing I need to make it all complete, to fill that empty void within, is to let some high-school drop-out draw pictures all over me like a little five-year-old with a crayon!

DAMN I've been missing out!

FTFA: Peter Dean, the Suffolk coroner, said it was not clear whether the DVT had been related to the tattoo, or whether it developed due to Mr Chillingworth being inactive due to the pain.

Mr Dean, who said that the tattooist had followed all necessary hygiene procedures, recorded a narrative verdict of a pulmonary embolism following a tattooing.

So, the coroner has no idea if the tattoo killed him, and the tattooist isn't to blame either way. Good job subby!

/have tattoos
//never had a problem with them

CrossEyed 2009-03-14 11:41:55 AM
Too bad the article notes that the ME doesn't attribute the death to the tattoo process (which was specifically noted to have followed correct procedures). But don't let that get in the way of your previously scheduled rants.

SpiderQueenDemon 2009-03-14 11:42:04 AM
Yay! Tattoo thread! I don't have one, but I've been looking for ideas these past twenty-some years. Come on Fark, show me something I haven't seen. That one of the guy with Darth Vader holding the severed head of George Lucas was pretty cool.

If I had the skin space, I'd get a Firefly-class transport being chased through Reaverspace, but for the level of detail I'd like, I am simply not broad enough across the back. So I made a t-shirt of what I wanted and put it on my fiance, who is somewhat larger, being all male and stuff. And then I made a version for myself that just kinda wrapped around. Serenity looks to be flying just over the cleavage, while Reavers chase it across my back. It probably would've hurt like crazy to actually tattoo on.

...Actually, that's what's happened to every tattoo design I've ever liked. I have a lot of t-shirts.

Guess I just solved my own problem there.

All I need to do to live life is have ink injected into my skin in a recognizable pattern? Pfft, and here I am wasting my time enriching my mind with math and science when instead I should have been living on the surface of my body!

FTA: His leg was swollen and red within two days and a scab formed. Mr Chillingworth had trouble sleeping because of the pain.

He visited his GP, who cleaned and dressed the wound and gave Mr Chillingworth painkillers and antihistamines.

Maybe antibiotics woulda helped.

Life isn't about math or, or, or... science! Live is about getting into the world and doing something! Feel some excitement for a change! Make rash decisions! You know you've always wanted a tattoo.

If you need to look down on someone else for something as common and immaterial as a tattoo in order to get some sort of ego masturbation that makes you feel high class, then I'll happily be lower class, thanks.
