Tent cities are old news, We have been seeing articles on this since the end of 2006.

It amazes me that MSM is so far behind on what's actually happening. Economists start screaming impending implosion in 2004-05 and the MSM is still talking about how great everything is in 2007. Tent cities start springing up all over America in 2006 and MSM reports it in 2009.

Does anyone, anywhere, other than my Grandma still watch cable or network news? Or is all this just for a little 88 yr old lady in Newark, Ohio?

mandyer 2009-03-14 09:22:53 AM
Some 300 people call a tent city in Sacramento home, including Tracy Vaughan, who moved to the city with her husband six months ago.

"We both worked for the same company, we both got laid off on the same day," she said.

"So yeah, it just kind of happened."

Well see now thur's yer problem rat thar.

"New figures show in February another 650,000 Americans lost their jobs, fuelling fears tented communities like this one will become more common."

So your relatives or maybe a nice enough friend would rather let you sleep in a tent than offer you some shelter?

Tent cities have been around for a long time in this country. They grow and regress according to the economy, but they'll probably always be here.

btw...

Does anyone, anywhere, other than my Grandma still watch cable or network news? Or is all this just for a little 88 yr old lady in Newark, Ohio?

The answer is No, grandma doesn't even watch television anymore. TV hasn't been worth watching since "Highlander" was canceled.

People have lost their jobs and moved into tents for decades, for hundreds of years. It sucks, but it happens. The only reason it's getting so much attention now is a moderate increase in market turmoil. I swear, the media is just rabblerousing and has been for years.

Fox News was always on the TV at work where I could hear it from my desk. I got sooooooo sick of listening to the overly excited AWs that I quit watching any news at all.

Move to Detroit and buy one of those foreclosed homes I always see on the news going for a buck fifty or whatever.

On the upside you're sleeping with a roof over your head. In the downside, you now live in Detroit... I can see how it could be a tough choice.

Will this be Fark's lasting contribution to social history?

In 2007, before America announced it intended to elect B. Hussein NeOmarxist, the Dow was over 14,000 and we had six years of continuous economic growth.

Everything was great. It was the MSM who told us otherwise and sold America on Barry's redistributive wealth plan.

We walked away from capitalism and we got exactly what we deserved.

I used to live in Detroit. I'd rather live in a tent in the woods than go back to that hellhole.

"Sacramento, California has developed a new Hooverville, now called a Bushville, as a result of the Late 2000s recession, with a population of 1,200." Heh, Bushville.

Didn't you get the memo? There are a couple of statements that explain all this:

1) IF your political party is in power and the economy is faltering, it's because it takes years for economic policies to affect the market. Thus, it's the last guy's fault that the economy sucks, and your guy's policy just hasn't had time to take effect.

2) IF your political party is in power and the economy is booming, it's because your party's policies had an immediate effect on the market, causing the boom.

Conversely:

1) IF the other party is in power and the economy is booming, it's because it takes years for economic policy to affect the market and as a result, it was the last guy's policy that is actually causing the boom.

2) IF the other party is in power and the economy is faltering, it's because this guy's policy sucks and he's totally wrecking the economy.

These rules apply regardless of political affiliation.

From my wxperience, people live in tents b/c they want to. Then they leverage your sympathy for the money they need for whatever their needs are, whether those be booze and crack or ham and eggs. These people prefer to live out of bounds.

The crisis started when?

I believe 1999 was when the government took over Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and ramped up the sub-prime lending to ridiculous levels. I've heard it began as early as 1992, although I have no evidence for that.

That would be what started the crisis.

no you just need more yellowshirts, acorn activitives...that should sort thing out...or lets just buy homes for all the dead beats. I am lining up for my free home I need a bigger one. why shouldnt I benifit from the messiah too.

alhazred 2009-03-14 09:47:40 AM
I worked in real estate (title research) for 12 years until the end of 07, when the housing market started to tank, and all of the biggest clients of the company I worked for went belly up. After the company closed, and since, I haven't been able to get a job in that field again, since the companies that ARE still open have had to cut like crazy just to stay afloat - nobody's hiring.

But I've been lucky. Working 2 jobs (and still only making half as much as I was), as well as odd jobs here and there, had a repo and in the middle of a bankruptcy, had to get some public assistance to pay one or two bills (which I swore I'd never do), but things are starting to even out, and I've been able to keep my house, at least (mostly because I didn't refi the hell out of it when everybody else was).

But again, I've been lucky. I've swallowed my pride and been helped out by friends and family in ways I never thought I'd need, and I know that some people, no matter the stakes, won't/can't do that. I felt like my inability to pay my bills in the beginning was my own failing, but as bad as it sounds, I've taken comfort in realizing that I'm far from alone. And far from the worst case scenario.

Ooh. Good point! Well, you would have a good point if correlation and causation were the same thing. Which they're not. So you don't.

Yep. That way it's named after someone who:

A. Contributed to the problem.

B. Got laid off this year!

Another vote for Shruburbs here.

Maybe if these people had spent the money for the tent on their mortgage they wouldn't have lost their homes!!!!1

BMFPitt 2009-03-14 09:55:59 AM
You know, if it got to the point where I was going to move into a tent, I would at least go get one of those 2-room deals. I'm sure these people had enough on their soon-to-be defaulted credit cards to pull it off.

By the way, Subby, they were called Hoovervilles - not Roosevilles. No blaming things on Obama that happened before he took office (it had been there for 6 months - 2 before the election.)

Don't worry, he'll actually be responsible for plenty of things you can complain about later.

poopeater 2009-03-14 09:57:19 AM
Hahaha! Hopedomes! Because this is what the Obama fed hope leads to: homelessness.

Stop relying on your leaders to fix your problems for you, fix 'em yourself.

"Ask not what your country can do for you"...

Everyone is going to need this.
Here is a great recipe for Hobo Bread. For best effect you should bake the cans over a fire in a 55 gal drum, punch a hole in the can and use a stick. All you really need is the flour, baking soda, sugar/molasses and salt. The rest is "extra"

HOBO BREAD

2 1/2 c. leftover coffee (or prepared instant coffee)
4 tsp. baking soda
2 c. raisins
1 c. granulated sugar
1 c. brown sugar
1 1/2 c. broken nuts
4 c. sifted flour
1/4 tsp. salt

Bring coffee to a boil. Remove from heat. Add baking soda and raisins. Cover and let stand overnight. In the morning, preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease and flour three 1 pound coffee tins.

To the coffee-raisin mixture, add sugars, nuts, flour and salt; mix well. Divide batter evenly among the 3 prepared cans, filling each slightly more than half full. Bake at 325 degrees for 65 minutes. Let cool in cans for 15 minutes before removing.

If necessary, tap cans on bottom to release loaf. Turn loaf on side and slice into rounds for serving. Spread with butter, if desired. Makes 3 loaves.

Wat?! I'm a grandma (to ten grandbabies) and became disenchanted with tv news a number of years ago. Gave up watching much of any television the day Highlander was canceled. Was my fav show, still upset about the second movie, and need to get a real life.

My new motto at work...
I'll listen to the customer's ramblings complaints but, if you want me to care it'll cost you another $2.00 an hour.
