Hey Harper.
Lego called, they want their hair back.

The other was behind closed doors Thursday evening to a group of key conservatives - sharply partisan remarks that ripped into the Liberals, libertarians, the Obama administration's tax policies and Wall Street.

Mr. Harper, I shall have to ask you to put down your kitten and step outside.

/Then I'll lock the door while you are shivering in the snow.

The Prime Minister has been criticized in some conservative circles for allowing the government to go into deficit with spending programs designed to stimulate the economy. At the conference, which continued Friday, some high-profile conservatives warned against watering down conservative ideas to win votes.

Sounds like the Conservative bigwigs aren't happy with Harper for the compromises he's made while under a minority gov't. Jesus H. tap-dancing Christ, what do they expect? To eliminate all corporate taxes and declare a bounty on the scalp of every Liberal?

Literally? I would have liked to see that.

"Imagine the stance Canada would have taken when Hezbollah and Hamas terrorists attacked Israel. Imagine how many Liberal insiders and ideologues would be now in the Senate, the courts and countless other federal institutions and agencies - I should say, how many more," Mr. Harper said to laughter.

"Imagine the costs of going through with the Kyoto and Kelowna accords with no plan to actually achieve anything on either the environment or aboriginal affairs. Imagine what a carbon tax would be doing to our economy in the middle of a global recession."

"Imagine how screwed I'd be if it wasn't for Paul Martin as Finance Minister."

This guy really wants a non-conf. I think he's tired of being PM.

MetalMoe 2009-03-14 10:26:10 AM
But Mr. Harper vigorously defended his policies, arguing that compromises had to be made to face the economic reality. "I'm talking about compromises that address the reality of the lives of real people."

It's good to see Harper admitting that his regular conservative policies have no basis in reality.

Honestly, I like visiting Canada but don't pretend that your nation even moves the needle on the geopolitical scale.

I love how warped his logic is.

Imagine the stance Canada would have taken when Hezbollah and Hamas terrorists attacked Israel.

Probably a very similar stance, which would have been as meaningless to Israel's military goals as Stephen Harper's. Israel doesn't act on our say-so. At most, I could see the Liberals fretting a little publicly about casualties while eventually taking the most moderate stance possible between the position of the US and the UK. And nobody outside Canada would care, it's not like we're currently on the Security Council or anything.

"Imagine how many Liberal insiders and ideologues would be now in the Senate, the courts and countless other federal institutions and agencies - I should say, how many more."

Liberal ideologue? I thought the standard Conservative criticism was that Liberals don't believe in anything. Now Liberals are "ideologues"?

"Imagine the costs of going through with the Kyoto and Kelowna accords with no plan to actually achieve anything on either the environment or aboriginal affairs. Imagine what a carbon tax would be doing to our economy in the middle of a global recession."

If a carbon tax were like the BC tax and 100% of revenues went to fund green innovation and transportation, it would actually have a stimulative effect in this recession because we'd be creating green jobs. As for the Kelowna Accord, I'm pretty stunned that the Prime Minister of Canada doesn't see alleviating the conditions on native reserves and helping to boost education and jobs for native people as a priority.

Mr. Harper urged the crowd not to "forget that Conservatives being in power has made an enormous difference."

To whom exactly, the arts organizations who've faced cutbacks in a shiatty economy? Harper hasn't demonstrated many qualities of leadership or vision since he took office.

That too.

"Guys, look, I'm sorry, we CAN'T be conservative right now. Or we'd fark up the whole economy. It's basic economics. Listen, as soon as things are good, we'll go right back to the fark up the whole economy policies that don't make sense, OK? OK."

Canada groups liberals and libertarians together. America does not.

Actually, "liberal" policies saved Canada's banks from the brunt of the damage affecting American banks.

Truncks1: Canada groups liberals and libertarians together. America does not.

Um... no. Liberals are pretty pro-federal government. Libertarians are very much about the devolution of power to the provinces. Because they vary across the left-right spectrum you'll find pretty committed libertarians in the Conservative party, Green party and Bloc Québécois.. and more social libertarians in the NDP and Liberals.

It's weird that the libertarian-bashing happened at the Temple of Preston. There was a very strong libertarian streak in the Reform party, probably stronger than any other party, even the Greens. Steve should remember, he used to write about building firewalls around Alberta.

Actually, we're ruled by the Queen of Canada; it's just that that title is also held by the same person who holds the title Queen of England. They're technically separate positions.

Conservative ideology contributes nothing but inertia. They've been wrong on war, civil rights, women's suffrage, slavery, the American Revolution and the wheel (must be the revolutions).

Yes. But, more do than agree with Harper. Harper won a minority government due to really weak/splintered opposition. Obama is more popular in Canada than Harper is. Obama is also much more popular in the US than Harper has ever been in Canada. As a politician, this matters. Harper is in charge up there by fluke, mostly.

somebody needs to sit Harper down and tell him to give his head a shake, and think about maybe having a PR strategy or something. for fox creek.

I'm happy the Liberals weren't in charge too, and he's right about several things there, but there is a right way to do these things and a wrong way, and sometimes you just don't need to be such a smug bastard.

It also helps that the President of the United States probably has more influence on Canada as a whole (as in one person over the whole country) than our own Prime Minister. In the case of Harper v Obama, that's a good thing.
