I can consistently remember out to 28 places using a neat little trick I happened upon. Those of you with Macs, have the text-to-speech read this using the "Cellos" voice. Makes remembering it easy.

3.14159265358979323846264

Then just add 33 at the end and you're at 30, which in my mind is plenty for accurate circle measurement.

Pi is a finite ratio. Why does everyone insist on memorizing the digits!?
That's like saying "I know 1/3 out to .333333333333333333333333333333333333.", but more of a pain in the ass and less useful since electronic calculators were invented.

4. and on very special occasions my interpretations of the Elders version of the "The Rain Dance w/ Happy Dance" overtures.

The grey lines around the circle are of equal length to the diameter. There are 3 grey lines in the perimeter. The remaining space equals 0.14159 of the diameter.

A new value for pi to assign.
I would set it to three

Than 3.14159

True dat. And it has the added bonus of being able to spot fundies' cars because of the irregular shaped wheels.

maybe just funny?

although knowing a proof that pi is not a rational number (it is not algebraic either; it is in fact "transcendental") is not the easiest thing. the sketch of the proof of the Lindemann-Weierstrass Theorem, from which you can obtain the transcendence of pi and other numbers, looks like a mess.

TopoGigo: Anybody feel like checking my work here?

From what I can see, you got the escape velocity wrong (only multiplied 11.186 km/s by 60 once so you got ~672 km/min, not km/hr). Earth's EV should actually be ~40,270 km/h so no, your 1294 km/h wouldn't shoot you off into space.

Generacy 2009-03-14 08:50:07 AM
TopoGigo
Your initial numbers are wrong. Escape velocity is 40320kph, and your velocity at the equator is 1674kph, so don't have nearly enough velocity to reach orbit it the earth stopped spinning (numbers from wiki). You can prove that to yourself by the following: if objects have reached escape velocity on the surface of the earth merely due to earth's rotation...they would be in orbit.
