I've always wondered about people who do not support certain type of stem cell research. If they get a disease in the future that has been cured by the research they opposed to they go for it?

Fail on epic levels, embryos are NOT, repeat are NOT babies and the sooner those that are not in the scientific community realize this fact the better. You can freeze and thaw embryos but you can not freeze and thaw a human. Check and mate.

Before people start in with the whole "Adult stem cells are as good as Embryonic now so it doesn't matter" thing, I want to repost this that I typed up in another thread:

Here's the pro's and cons:

Embryonic Stem Cells:
PROS:

Able to isolate and culture much much more Pluripotent stem cells (somatic). Can be maintained in vitro by far the longest and remain mostly in S stage synthesizing DNA.

Embryonic stem cells have the highest amount of plasticity and it's possible to cultivate huge supplies of them due to their clonogenic nature and large supplies of telomerase.

Summary: They are easier to get, they are easier to maintain, and they are able to differentiate into a higher variety of "purposed" cells, massively increasing their clinical research potential.

CONS:
The Controvery.
Clinical uses are limited at this stage due to immunosuppression resulting from foreign cell implantation.
Potential tumorigenic problems.

Adult Stem cells (derived from skin cells, intestinal lining, etc)

PROs:

No Controversy
Limited tumorigenic complications
Ideally (if produced from same host) no problems with immunosuppression.

CONS:

Much harder to produce in volumes necessary for research.
Are not known to exist for all cell types.
They do not grow well in vitro
They have limited growth potential due to their previous expenditure of telomeric extremities that are necessary for self renewal.

Summary:

Adult stem cells are much more expensive and time consuming to cultivate. They are hard to duplicate. They do *NOT* have all of the variability of embryonic stem cells, meaning there is research that currently CAN NOT be done with them that CAN be done using embryonic cells.
HOWEVER: They have a major plus in that they have a lesser potential for causing tumors and for avoiding the problem of immune rejection.

OVERALL SUMMARY: Adult stem cells are exciting and may eventually (read:years down the road) have all the versatility of embryonic stem cells. Right now they don't.

Since we have a large supply of embryonic stem cells from blastocytes that are only days old (and WILL NEVER BECOME A BABY..PERIOD) we should definitely be pursuing both avenues of research.

Again, it comes down to choices in life.
