Spamzilla: yeah. that joke never gets old.

No, it doesn't. When you have someone say something like this:

"I think we can solve some of the tougher issues without sacrificing human embryos," Perdue said

It demonstrates a fundamental lack of understanding of the subject and brings to mind people who believed matches were the work of the devil because they smelled of sulfur.

NewportBarGuy [TotalFark] 2009-03-13 11:27:34 PM
What a lovely human being. I hope this precious person never sees a family member of his experience a debilitating illness that could have been cured by science.

Praise the Lord

Spamzilla [TotalFark] 2009-03-13 11:34:28 PM
Speaking of a lack of understanding the subject; a key word missing from the headline above is the word "embryonic", presumably because that makes the headline funny.

Governor Perdue's policy is regarding embryonic stem cell research ONLY. It's not like we're criminalizing it like, say, Michigan. But they're a bunch of inbred, snake-handling rednecks up there, right?

I've always wondered about people who do not support certain type of stem cell research. If they get a disease in the future that has been cured by the research they opposed to they go for it?

Can we stop saying "embryo", which conjures up a vaguely anthropomorphic bug-eyed thing sucking a thumb and call it what it is: blastocyst

It isn't human life if it can be wiped off a counter top with a tissue.

And you know right now, or at least very soon, there will be a woman somewhere in the world having her period and out will come the blastocyst that never got settled in the womb.

The other thing the Republicans conveniently forget to mention is that there is still a law saying that you can't create embryos for research, you can only use the leftovers from infertile couples.

And as for the adoption argument, we've got enough kids running around without parents, how about you adopt them first and then maybe we consider that angle.

Bugs_Bunny_Practiced_Psychological_Warfare 2009-03-14 01:31:35 AM
Tell ya what Sonny, why not use the money to buy stem cells instead? You don't have to get them from human embryos-an umbilical cord after a birth holds billions of them and they get tossed out with the rest of the trash. Knowing what they can do, you could sell them at a massive profit to people who need them later.

Nah, that just makes too much sense even if you could make money.

How can it be okay to create embryos for infertility but not to help the sick? Either way your playing god and destroying embryos.

FTA: Perdue spoke in favor of a bill passed by the state Senate Thursday that would prohibit the creation of an in-vitro human embryo in Georgia for any purpose other than to treat infertility.

What exactly does the Governor think happens to unused fertilized embryos? So it's OK to destroy them but not OK to use them to advance medicine?

We also approved weed, on a medicinal level or something (and I guess there's a way to apply to the state government to be a farmer of said crop). So the state is going to hell, but we're mellow and drunk as it happens.

Agreed, the lack of any intelligent Republican leaders is completely amazing, I do not see the GOP lasting another 4 years and the sooner they are gone the better off we will all be.

How can it be okay to create embryos for infertility but not to help the sick? Either way your playing god and destroying embryos.

Fail on epic levels, embryos are NOT, repeat are NOT babies and the sooner those that are not in the scientific community realize this fact the better. You can freeze and thaw embryos but you can not freeze and thaw a human. Check and mate.

Before people start in with the whole "Adult stem cells are as good as Embryonic now so it doesn't matter" thing, I want to repost this that I typed up in another thread:

Here's the pro's and cons:

Embryonic Stem Cells:
PROS:

Able to isolate and culture much much more Pluripotent stem cells (somatic). Can be maintained in vitro by far the longest and remain mostly in S stage synthesizing DNA.

Embryonic stem cells have the highest amount of plasticity and it's possible to cultivate huge supplies of them due to their clonogenic nature and large supplies of telomerase.

Summary: They are easier to get, they are easier to maintain, and they are able to differentiate into a higher variety of "purposed" cells, massively increasing their clinical research potential.

CONS:
The Controvery.
Clinical uses are limited at this stage due to immunosuppression resulting from foreign cell implantation.
Potential tumorigenic problems.

Adult Stem cells (derived from skin cells, intestinal lining, etc)

PROs:

No Controversy
Limited tumorigenic complications
Ideally (if produced from same host) no problems with immunosuppression.

CONS:

Much harder to produce in volumes necessary for research.
Are not known to exist for all cell types.
They do not grow well in vitro
They have limited growth potential due to their previous expenditure of telomeric extremities that are necessary for self renewal.

Summary:

Adult stem cells are much more expensive and time consuming to cultivate. They are hard to duplicate. They do *NOT* have all of the variability of embryonic stem cells, meaning there is research that currently CAN NOT be done with them that CAN be done using embryonic cells.
HOWEVER: They have a major plus in that they have a lesser potential for causing tumors and for avoiding the problem of immune rejection.

OVERALL SUMMARY: Adult stem cells are exciting and may eventually (read:years down the road) have all the versatility of embryonic stem cells. Right now they don't.

Since we have a large supply of embryonic stem cells from blastocytes that are only days old (and WILL NEVER BECOME A BABY..PERIOD) we should definitely be pursuing both avenues of research.

A prehensile tail would be kinda cool...and rather useful too. And as primates, we've probably got leftover bits in our brains that controlled this sort of thing.

Hey, think of the marketing possibilites! You'd need new clothes to accomodate the new appendage.
They probably wouldn't be furry, since humans have shed most of their body hair over the eons...
so you'd need to have something like a tube sock to keep it warm when the weather's bad.
You're probably going to want to accessorize it, too.
Tail rings, maybe?
PROFIT!

/ Just thinking that while a cat's tail is an elegant thing, a prehensile tail would be so much more versatile.
// Don't give my cats prehensile tails, PLEASE
/// Or opposable thumbs...
