Louisiana has low unemployment because nobody is even looking for work anymore but U3 doesn't take into account discouraged workers.

Yeah... he's been ridiculed a bit. Not for this, but for other reasons. Some of which he deserved to be ridiculed for.

Well, if the farkers are too lazy to file unemployment, then yeah, it'll look like they got jobs. I'm thinking they are all in diabetic comas from drinking too much Diet Pepsi and chomping down pork rinds.

/seriously, someone go check on them

I'm sorry, what does Jindal's ethnic heritage have to do with anything? Ohh, wait, you're pulling out the "if you criticize him, you're racist" card that you tried so very hard to claim people were using in the context of Obama, when they weren't. I forgot that your response to getting whipped by the Democrats is to transparently and unabashedly utilize the same strategy that you falsely accused them of using. Got it.

Is this really that surprising considering the state's economy was reset to ZERO by Katrina just a couple of years ago?

Wouldn't it basically have to be experiencing the downturn 10 times worse than anyone else for unemployment to actually rise there?

tnpir [TotalFark] 2009-03-13 09:53:44 AM
I can't believe Nabb1 hasn't dropped by to explain to the rest of us clowns that Jindal is the greatest thing that's ever happened to the state of Louisiana.

Isn't a good chunk of Louisiana's population living in 49 other states?

Bullshiat. There have been plenty of asswipes playing that card, and they still are. Pascalsghost was trying to play that game with me just last night:

That plus didn't tons of people leave, AND simultaneously there are construction and rebuilding projects going on for people who stayed/returned?

Not to knock it but it seems Louisiana isn't just "look at what we did in this crisis," they're still riding waves and changes from the other crisis (Katrina) so their data doesn't really have a normal baseline.

Jindal might be a fine governor, and what I've read about him as a governor (except the turning down of federal unemployment money) seems positive. But LA is simply not a good state to measure "reaction to the economy" in considering the mess they are still digging themselves out of.

mediaho 2009-03-13 10:56:16 AM
Bobby Jindal can do anything.

stainlesssteelrat 2009-03-13 10:56:20 AM
Uh, isn't unemployment measured by the number of people officially getting unemployment insurance checks?

So, if people have been out of a job long enough that they have run out the clock, they aren't unemployed anymore?

Can anyone else here do the math?

/Just sayin..

That made me laugh.

Yes, I'm sure that Louisiana's drop in unemployment was all the Governor's doing. If Michigan's Governor would just take notes from Bobby Jindal, that state would really turn itself around.

bartink 2009-03-13 10:59:30 AM
I guess they all work for the government contractors now...wait, I thought government jobs were no way to lower unemployment? Fark him then. He should turn down all that Katrina money and pull his state out of its shiathole by its own bootstraps.

Unemployment rates go down when people stop applying, or are no longer eligible, for unemployment. Not only when they get a job.

I suppose we can do this in a year after Obama single-handedly lowers unemployment rates for the entire country. Republicans are just gasping at straws. If Jindal does improve Louisiana, good for him and even better for Louisiana. Louisiana was a burned down house a few years ago. Putting up a tent is improvement over a pile of ashes and doesn't take much effort or know how.

Is the "actual" number for unemployment (one that factors in the disenfranchised, etc) actually recorded anywhere?

The closest ridicule he got relating to this was the questioning of his motives when he rejected stimulus-related unemployment benefits. I don't think it's correct to say that he received no ridicule at all over unemployment.

I don't mean to steal your thunder, but I know you guys have your sound-bite already picked out: "Yes, well...we would have been out of the recession a lot FASTER if we had done more tax cuts and less spending! No, really! I've got charts and everything!"

Some things never change.

The Louisiana Labor Department says that Louisiana lost about 35,000- 400,000 jobs between December 2008 and January 2009.

http://www.ksla.com/Global/story.asp?S=9995478&nav=0RY5

The figures show Louisiana is not immune to the national recession.

To note concerning the latest figures, many recent closings and job losses have yet to be tallied, including the expected loss of about 1,000 Pilgrim's Pride employees in Farmerville, La.

For the first time, claims for unemployment benefits also rose to 654,000 from the previous week's figure of 639,000.

The jump in jobless claims and unemployment is above what many analysts expected for the state of Louisiana.

Which is correct?

Aren't most Louisianians still in Texas, or did they start shipping people back?

You want us to give credit for low unemployment to a governor who says that government isn't the answer?

Did he someone lower unemployment while off-duty or something?

I've never seen one. Also I don't think that you should be counted as unemployed if you're not looking for a job that pays your rent and bills.

Well, anyway, just because he's a moran politically doesn't mean he's a bad governor - and he'd have to be really bad for employment not to be rising in his state - it's recovering from a disaster. The job market was great here in California after the quakes, too.

Only one state recorded a drop in its unemployment rate. This same state is the one governed by an Indian-American governor who has been ridiculed by the media who gave a terrible speech everyone (red, blue, black, white, left, right, gay straight, genius, and retard alike) thought sucked hard.

Other than that, yea, good. I'm glad Unemployment dropped 0.4%

A lot of hoops to jump thru just to prop some more snark under a media persecution complex.
