I don't know if you are being snarky towards Jones or towards the Stooges here.... so I'll just leave it alone....

Jones is no virtuoso, by any means, and while a lot of the Stooges stuff is deceptively primitive, this sounds like it could be pretty cool......

The Stooges are basically turning into a Punk History lesson. Start with Iggy and the Stooges, progress to Jonesy and the Pistols, and end up with Mike Watt and the Minutemen.

Uzzah 2009-03-12 06:40:23 PM
Jones co-wrote and played guitar on "Cry for Love" off "Blah Blah Blah."

I know this because I own a copy of that terrible, terrible album.

Misfits too. Saw them a few years back with the current lineup; Jerry Only, Dez Cadena, and Marky Ramone. WTF? Cool to see all of them, but still.

I saw the Misfits with Jerry Only, Dez, and Robo. Appropriately, they did quite a few Black Flag covers. It was at Riot Fest, where the Germs played without Darby Crash (and with Shane West taking his spot). The show the day before had the Dead Kennedy's without Jello.

What a travesty.

DocRoberts 2009-03-12 07:46:57 PM
Since he's already toured with Iggy (Brick By Brick tour, if memory serves), I'm sure he knows most of the tunes already.

I saw the show back in the day, so get off my lawn. It was awesome, but since its an Iggy show, we already knew that.

First off, the Misfits are a total joke with or without Marky - so there really isn't much point in talking about that.

But, let's be honest. Punk rock was about smashing rock idolatry and now thirty years later all we talk about is how this reunion or that one is "sacrilege" for whatever reason.

Bollocks. People who say things like this should just go to church, because they have all the mental defects of the religious.

mat catastrophe: But, let's be honest. Punk rock was about smashing rock idolatry and now thirty years later all we talk about is how this reunion or that one is "sacrilege" for whatever reason.

First off, the Misfits were the best when Glenn Danzig was in the band- because Danzig WAS the band. He wrote the guitar, wrote the lyrics, etc. You will never hear anyone of any worth argue otherwise. Marky Ramone was never in the band when Danzig was. Marky Ramone isn't even as good of a drummer as Robo. So sorry, that point doesn't stick. No dice.
Second, the idea isn't that the reunion is bad- I didn't give a shiat when the Sex Pistols reunited. In fact, I went to see them. The idea that is so repulsive is that the main songwriters AREN'T IN THE BANDS ANYMORE.

The Misfits without Danzig aren't the Misfits.
The Germs without Darby are more like the anti-bodies.
The Dead Kenndeys without Jello are not the farking Dead Kennedys.

Got it now?

How is it idol worship to know my punk rock history? Last I heard, learning about what you like to talk about and not spouting off random bullshiat makes you intelligent. Actually, you don't even have to be very well informed to know what I'm saying. If you don't know that Danzig wrote everything for the Misfits back in the 70s and the 80s, I'm not sure you should be in a thread arguing about punk rock.

I'm not sure Danzig is punk rock.

Now you just must be trolling, or stupid.

Glenn Danzig now? No.

Glenn Danzig then? And the Misfits then? Yeah. A little bit. And by a little bit I mean a whole farking lot.

If you're seriously saying 70s and 80s era Misfits weren't punk... I think we're done here.

They weren't and I've been done with you for forty-five minutes but it is just so much fun to see some Incredibly Serious Punk Rocker get uptight about their supposedly iconoclastic, nothing-is-sacred musical form.

I mean, really. Really?

Do you actually listen to the lyrics of some of the songs or do you just like wearing a black leather jacket and having a smart haircut with, and correct me if I am wrong, funny-colored hair?

Well, if you are listening to Misfits lyrics you are probably just a closet goth with anger management issues.

Do you wear the uniform? Do you go to church on Sundays with all the other God-Fearing Americans who fall in line and bleat on their way to slaughter?

Whatever, nevermind.

Seems like the one who wants all punk lyrics to be about politics is the one who would like everyone to fall in a neat little line.

My guess, though, is that fast three chord down stroke rock with angry lyrics and attitude is pretty punk rock.

I wish this were still the drug-addled 60s-80s in rock music, when the artists would die before embarrassing themselves and destroying their legacies.

Indeed. I was fortunate to have drank and/or smoked a few with Ron on a few occasions back in the nineties, and he was one cool mother farker. He was playing in Dark Carnival at the time.

I am currently working on a book about The Stooges/Iggy and had planned on meeting up with Ron next month. I obtained his phone number through a mutual friend. When I called and explained what I wanted to do (meet with him, go over some notes, get the stories down straight), he readily agreed. He even remembered who I was (at the time back then, I was just an awe-stricken young man who could have been one of a thousand dumb, punk kids) and said he would be willing to spend a few days with me recounting Stooges' stories, dates, and to go through my notes with me to correct the inaccuracies.

I saw The Stooges first reunion tour, the Chicago show, and it was amazing. I mean, yeah, it's The FARKING STOOGES, but even I was a little skeptical going in. I have seen Iggy solo anytime he has come within 500 miles of the midwest since 1987, and we all KNOW he is amazing.... but I wasn't so sure about The Stooges....

My fears were unfounded.... one of the finest displays of Rock and Roll ever... up there with a Cramps show or the Van Halen Diver Down tour....

Jones DOES have big shoes to fill, but I think he'll do fine, if it happens.... Ron and Steve are the same sort of player- all meat and potatoes.... And Steve has the right attitude... My old band had the opportunity to open for the Pistols on their first reunion tour, at the Milwaukee show, and while security kept EVERYONE away from the band, I did overhear Steve in the bar making fun of all of the "stupid punk twats" and he remarked, "Holy Hell, did we do this? Farkin' 'orrible..." which made me respect the guy......

Really, I mean, it would be a punk rock Supergroup- Iggy, Steve, Rock Action, Mike Watt, with a little Steve MacKaye thrown in for good measure....

If Iggy decides to keep rocking.... He's releasing a new album, a jazz album, on which he sings in French.....

/RIP Ron

Did the lead guitar for "Cry for Love" also co-wrote "Winners and Losers". Not his best work. It was the David Bowie saves Iggy again album. It's not a bad album but not his best.

He played on the Instinct album but he never toured with him. He may have played with him live a couple of times.

Yeah, Seamus played guitar on that tour... weird black turtleneck and wayfarers on, yet he aped Jones pretty decently. I still have the RAW F*CKING POWER tour shirt from that tour somewhere (man did I think I was a cool 16 year old in that ridiculous thing!).

And screw you guys, I love Blah, Blah, Blah! I mean, it's no Zombie Birdhouse or Soldier, but it's a great "other" side of Iggy, like cleaned up and synthed Alice on Flush The Fashion. I guess I just like all things Iggy ..... well, maybe not Avenue B or Skull Ring. Jeez, those haven't had more than a spin or 3 in my house. Awful albums.

I remember in the late 80's/early 90's Iggy was on Letterman and Steve Jones was playing guitar. Trying to remember the song...
Let's check youtube.... and it's "Cold Metal" from 1986
hard to tell with the long hair, but that's Steve Jones...

Oddly, Watt has been the Stooges' touring bassist since their reunion. Kind of a waste of his skills, IMHO.

Or is that what you meant? I'm a little foggy today...
