i would have included Brad Whitford of Aerosmith. Joe Perry said he's at his best working with him

I thought Ray Manzarek was The Doors. He's the only reason to listen to them.

are typical readers of this publication ignorant retards? any rock fan has not overlooked any of these people. what the fark...

Nabb1 [TotalFark] 2009-03-11 02:14:22 PM
I don't know whether to be happy or dismayed by the over-representation of bass players on that list.

Nabb1 [TotalFark] 2009-03-11 02:17:58 PM
Oh, and submitter, how in the fark can you honestly say you never knew George Harrison existed? Even if you don't, you are an idiot for not having the sense to not admit it.

TeddyRooseveltsMustache [TotalFark] 2009-03-11 02:18:34 PM
Even Peter Criss doesn't want to be Peter Criss.

UsikFark 2009-03-11 02:28:15 PM
JPJ, George, and Ray are hard to miss because "everyone" has heard their work if they have heard their respective bands. Richard Wright might be a better mention, but again, if you've heard "great gig in the sky" at least his influence isn't lost on you.

Oliver Reidel is a bassist, but is the most competent with technology out of the six. Also, the intro on Seemann....

I give Watts of the Stones meta points because he once told Mick "I'm not your drummer, you're my singer" or something like that.

Roger Waters is possibly my favorite member of Pink Floyd. I suspect there is a bit of a type-B trend in bassists, and Roger is one exception.

Srsly. What a crap list. All of those people are fairly well known and revered.

Who the hell didn't know John Entwhistle existed? George Harrison? Come on.

The guy's amazing on bass and wrote most, if not all, black sabbath's lyrics

Nabb1: I don't know whether to be happy or dismayed by the over-representation of bass players on that list.

Well, it pretty much has to be. You're not going to overlook too many lead vocalists, and lead guitar players tend to be AW's. George Harrison is basically the only exception to that, and he made the list. Great drummers always get noticed as well. So, you're stuck with primarily bassists and maybe rhythm guitarists.

Speaking of rhythm guitar, I think Stone Gossard's work with Pearl Jam is often undervalued.

I'll tell you who I would have put on the list, though- Jim Steinman. That's right- Meat Loaf's pianist and songwriter. I believe he wrote some great (if now overplayed) rock songs.

It's Spike, the TV equivalent of Maxim. So the answer is "yes".

Elliot Easton
Izzy Stradlin
Dave Grohl(Nirvana)

/gotta get back to work

This website is blocked at work but I'm guessing 1 through 4 are members of Mini Kiss.

hockeyfarker [TotalFark] 2009-03-11 04:23:58 PM
I always kinda feel bad for whoever the fourth guy in Green Day is this tour.

Well, pre-Dio lyrics. And not all of them.
Just the good ones (Ozzy wrote stuff like "Changes").

I'm not sure his own band knew he existed.

His part in 'Live at Pompeii' explains a lot.

The list lost me at Michael Anthony. Van Halen built themselves on Eddie's flashy hammer-ons and DLR's flamboyancy. Take those two things away and Van Halen is just another run-of-the-mill rock band. Anthony is nothing special.

Canadian Canuck [TotalFark] 2009-03-11 04:54:55 PM
No John Deacon?

That guy was insanely talented and smart and wrote the bass line to Another One Bites the Dust and probably Under Pressure. Yet no one I ever talk to has heard of him.

Blocked at work. George Harrison is on that list? Really? REALLY?!?

/Now I'm all stabby >=(

My dad beat Michael Anthony in a taco eating contest in Miami in the 80's, so I'm really getting a kick, etc.
/Tacos as in food, pervs
//He won a bunch of disco records

lurkster [TotalFark] 2009-03-11 05:29:20 PM
I wondered what would happen when Eddie's kid replaced Michael Anthony on bass when Van Halen toured this last time. Not that Anthony's a whiz at the bass (he's no slouch, but he's not making instructional videos on technique, if you know what I mean), but like the article said, when they played live he (along with Alex) held the songs together while Eddie & Dave did their thing.

Check me out, I'm edgy and Rock and Roll. I'll be sure to sprinkle the occasional obscenity throughout my writing and end sentences with "man."

Learn to write, you shiat. What the fark is wrong with you, man?

Can you point out one single member of Queen who wasn't insanely talented?

Apart from that, I was unsurprised to see a list full of bass players.

7 bassist, 1 accordionist, 1 keyboardist, 1 drummer.

add another vote to Rick Wright tally. And if we're on the subject of overlooked bassist, might as well add Eric Avery of Jane's Addiction.

priestrape 2009-03-11 05:34:24 PM
also....

John McVie
Andy Summers
Bill Bruford
Charlie Watts
Walter Becker

Cornwell: Can you point out one single member of Queen who wasn't insanely talented?

True. Even educationally all of Queen's members were really smart. I know May was getting and finally got a PhD in astrophysics, Deacon has a degree in electrical engineering, Roger Taylor has a degree in biology, and I believe Mercury has a degree in art or something.

I Like Bread 2009-03-11 05:36:55 PM
My vote goes to Mike Rutherford of Genesis. Probably solely responsible for keeping the band's sound updated, and has shown to be the most versatile instrumentalist in the band. How is he overlooked? When he took a break to start a solo project, Mike & The Mechanics, he wasn't even the frontman.

But I think Pete Best takes the Lifetime Achievement Award for this particular category. Poor bastard.

Frank Hannon of Tesla should be on that list.

Good one also

I Like Bread: When he took a break to start a solo project, Mike & The Mechanics, he wasn't even the frontman.

Well that's because he can't really sing. Also Tony Banks is no slouch either.

Uzzah 2009-03-11 05:41:46 PM
Dave Davies. The best part of most Kinks songs are Dave's pinched harmonies, followed by a ripping guitar solo that Ray couldn't have laid down on his best day. Without Dave, there would not have been any Kinks.

WhyteRaven74 [TotalFark] 2009-03-11 05:45:13 PM

So should Tommy Skeoch.

/too bad he's not in the band any more

The only guys that even come close to fitting the article's
criteria are the guys from The Band and they are/were excellent
musicians.

Balrog1 2009-03-11 05:49:49 PM
That list goes to 11.

buttsmckracken 2009-03-11 05:52:36 PM

Nils Lofgren.
