Well my city is doing it's part the cops have set up a speed trap near my houe with revolving cops when one makes a bust another moves closer to the intersection waiting for the next perp. Somedays I wish I could flip them off but seeing how that's illegal I won't. Can someone explain why it is illegal.

Thanks. Interesting, having never looked up anything on it, I assumed that the sales tax illegal immigrants paid would offset the costs they take. The CBO report indicates otherwise.

That being said, that rep is calling for increased enforcement. Would the cost of that enforcement actually make up for what illegal immigrants are costing?

here are his solution, from that link:

1. We know that most illegal immigrants come to the United States to work. California should require every employer in the state, including state agencies and contractors, to use E-Verify to check the immigration status of employees.
2. California should prohibit sanctuary policies and require that all local and state law enforcement agencies cooperate with immigration authorities to remove criminal illegal immigrants, including screening for legal status at local jails.
3. California should end its policy of providing virtually free in-state college tuition for illegal immigrants. This is a matter of fairness as well as fiscal responsibility. Why should U.S. citizens or legal residents who have lived their whole lives in California be penalized for leaving the state for a year, when someone illegally in the country and in the state for a year gets a free ride?

I can see small business owners crying foul on #1.
How much would #2 cost?
As far as #3, can illegal immigrants actually get a free college ride? How the hell does that work? Sounds like hyperbole to me...

Costing California 10 billion a year because the Feds won't let us secure our own border.

Keep writing checks feds; about x4 more of those $2B every year should cover it.

Tyler Durden, would Cali really try to secure their own borders?

modestlivinglegend 2009-03-11 01:01:07 PM
California does not have an illegal immigrant problem. It has a legal immigrant problem as they are now the minority or will be soon. We've already gotten rid of most of the businesses and jobs. As soon as we can get the rest of those legal immigrants out, we will be fine. Oh, and more money please, government. Thanks

Here's another from the Congressional Budget Office:

http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdocs/87xx/doc8711/12-6-Immigration.pdf

California is $44B in debt. Illegals and their kids are costing CA aprox $10b a year.

Feds can secure our borders and deport illegals, or they, we, YOU can keep writing checks.

If the hispanic gangs haven't made it to your area yet.....wait awhile.

On the 'Right America, Feeling Wronged' documentary, the Governator is caught saying during a campaign how he had to leave Austria due to socialism... and how Obama is going to turn America into a socialist country if McCain does not win.

So I'm assuming he is going to decline the offer then???

Nemo's Brother: Or they could save over $11 billion a year by enforcing their illegal immigration laws.

The corporate mantra: Socialized losses, privatized profits.

They're illegal, so they're cut off from the legal system. Therefore corporations are free to pay them slave wages and force slave working conditions; since they're illegal they can't complain. They don't pay most taxes, but use all the same services (roads, hospitals, schools) everyone else does.

End result: You get sunk paying for their social costs, while the CEO of ConAgra hires another illegal to cut his lawn.

Build the goddamn wall and this problem will solve itself over time because everyone born here is a citizen (also, mandatory civics/"your rights" classes would help). But then you're a disgusting racist Gringo... can you live with that?

And either double-triple the cost of food or, more likely, crash the industry when people start buying cheaper foreign produce, milk, eggs, etc. Half the dairies in this state are already about to collapse.

I would take it if it was offered. Despite the previously mentioned subsidizing of a lot of other states, we would probably have to rewrite our constitution if we were our own nation and could fix some of the systemic problems (2/3 vote for budget, ease of getting initiatives on the budget). But, alas, this is not likely to happen.

Cost of labor is a fraction of the cost of produce. You could probably double the wage of field workers and only see a 10% increase in produce costs.

"If a 40 percent farm worker wage increase were fully passed on to consumers, and if there were no farm productivity improvements, the $0.06 farm labor cost of a head of lettuce would rise to $0.08, and the retail price would rise from $1 to $1.02." - U.C. Davis (new window)
