Does this mean I'm going to have to go back to the dark ages of Kazaa and Napster clones in order to find music videos?

And why does youtube hate it's own business model?

The move comes after a dispute between YouTube, which is owned by Google, and the Performing Rights Society (PRS).

The PRS, which represents music publishers, has been holding out for a better pay deal for artists whose videos are available to watch on the video site.

Now they're about to learn the difference between some money and no money ;)

All they are doing is driving everyone towards the only choice that really makes sense anymore...

Piracy.

Avast, ye mateys!

Corporate scum plots and schemes to take us down, to hold us down.

Holding back new technologies in the name of profits.

Anti-consumer and anti-human, they wish only for control.

Let us strike down these dinosaurs with all of our might. Put an end to the dieing business model once and for all.

Let us unite under one pirate banner, landing a killing blow to this decrepit, bloated, hideous beast!

YAR!

Pretty much.

And I really, really, really don't get it. At what farking point does anyone make money of a music video? I mean, apart from the extortion of YouTube. Could someone explain this connection to me please? Is there really somebody out there who believes that I will go out and purchase a dvd because I can't find a 20 year old music video when I feel like watching it once at 2am?

If anyone actually is able to make money from music videos, wouldn't it be rather handy to have them somewhere where each and every single time that video gets played is recorded, rather than forcing users to find a pirated they have no control over?

See, it's funny because popular music is inferior to the music Submitter listens to. You see if you don't listen to bands that only 12 people have heard of, you listen to crap.

trifoldhat 2009-03-10 12:04:17 PM
These asshats are getting free media exposure, and they are going to try and extort them for money, all in the name of supporting the artist. All of the CD I bought in the last 3 years happened after finding a really good band with a video on YouTube. Before that, I went 5 years without buying music, because I thought the stuff I liked was no longer being made.

Hilariously enough, Youtube is the only place where most people can watch music videos. I think this is a tactic on Youtube's part to show this fact.

renlibrarian 2009-03-10 12:22:39 PM
The PRS, which represents music publishers, has been holding out for a better pay deal for artists whose videos are available to watch on the video site.

Now, the funny part in all this is that what is defined as "premium" mostly consists of the official videos POSTED BY THE LABELS THEMSELVES. We're still working with PRS for Music in an effort to reach mutually acceptable terms for a new license, but until we do so we will be blocking premium music videos in the UK that have been supplied or claimed by record labels. So the PRS is trying to get money for the content that the labels are posting themselves? "Thank you for that free advertising for our artists, now would you please pay us for it?"

Jonathan Hohensee 2009-03-10 12:36:48 PM
I love it how even though the labels would load up music videos, they still would put up videos with the worse possible quality.

It's like watching an online movie from 1999.

This. Video and sound quality aren't even a consideration when the labels put up a video. I've favorited quite a few videos that were uploaded by fans who balanced the sound for headphones and used DVD quality rips. Those are superior and naturally get taken down in a couple of months.

And I usually go to YouTube to sample music after hearing about someone. This proves that the record labels don't have a farking clue.

sisterinarms 2009-03-10 01:36:27 PM
Wow. These Record Industry Idiots really don't get it, do they? I also go to Youtube to sample the music when someone suggests someone I might like. I have bought more cd's in the last 3 years than I have in the last 10 thanks to youtube and other nameless sites that I go to sample the sound. What morons. I mean, it seems to me these guys/gals are trying to not promote the artists. If I was an artist, I would demand the FREE launch of a video BEFORE my album came out to generate excitement. This is why more & more indie bands are breaking through. Now when you go to youtube you can watch their videos and fark the Music Industry.

Most electronic genres are absolutely flooded with too much music. It's become some of the most disposable music around thanks to "dubplate" and "promo" culture. Thankfully, there's a ton of great music in there, but it becomes pretty difficult to sort through it all.

Otherwise I spend all day listening to house music. And techno, drum n bass, ambient, etc.

/Even trying to give a trance a try right now.

U2 is actually playing on my computer right now, and this particular playlist has acts like Vampire Weekend, Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, OMD, Garbage, and Franz Ferdinand. Pretty sure they have at least 13 fans.

WhyteRaven74 [TotalFark] 2009-03-10 03:36:43 PM
the reason why a lot of the record label posted videos look so bad is because they're not the record labels own rips. They're rips other people made and posted on YouTube. I figured this out after seeing a particularly bad rip someone posted, then seeing it as posted by SonyBMG. Meanwhile someone else had posted a really good rip.

Yeah, you're probably right. Unfortunately, a lot of people I know consider my musical choices to be "crap." I suppose it's true that there's a fine line between fame and obscurity; talent and delusions.
