Is 'hipster' in the vernacular now?

I can't imagine using that term unless I was an eighty year old man referring to Pete Wentz's tapered pant legs.

I imagine submitter is a shotgun-wielding Methuselah, screaming at the Spaniard children playing on his lawn.

Seriously. That is a word I have bookmarked for use in my twilight years when I can't control my bowel movements and have to keep that constant chewing motion in order to soothe my gums so I don't go sh*thouse insane and just start boiling bunny rabbits.

This would have been a great idea, oh, I dunno, ten years ago

LOLOLLOL, you hate everything popular like 3 Doors Down who are good because they're popular.

/my impression of anyone using the term hipster.

I don't like Daniel Johnston. Nobody's a fan of his songwriting, they're only fans of his mental problems.

Mine's someone who listens to music all over the map and will give a chance to just about anything, yet has to live/work with someone who cares more that they are seen listening to the right music than enjoying said music. The guy went though this in Junior High and doesn't want to deal with men in their 20s doing the same thing.

He also notices that hipsters assume all people who aren't listening to Pitchfork and Paste bands are all Nickelback groupies -- because those are the only two options.

They filmed these shows on Super 8 cameras, camcorders, and cell phones, and the movie cobbles all that footage together.

Well, it sounded cool until I read this.....

I'll watch it for the Belle and Sebastian.

Well, and Sonic Youth just so I can get all "get off my lawn".

I reckon Belle and Sebastian would be the part I fast forward through, but that's what makes the world interesting, different taste and all!

Hipsters are probably too busy hating Pitchfork's redesigned site.

I suppose there aren't too many of the current breed of Hipster in Tempe, AZ, but try living in Brooklyn, NY and not using that term on a daily basis.

okay you got me there. WTF's with the giant flash ad that takes up the entire top portion of my screen now?

csi_yellowknife: He also notices that hipsters assume all people who aren't listening to Pitchfork and Paste bands are all Nickelback groupies -- because those are the only two options.

Sorry, but I see "LOL, you only like obscure music!" as basically turning a blind eye to the truly awfulness of the mainstream now. Mainstream doesn't, and hasn't, always equated to shiat, but I can only think of a very small handful of artists who are both popular and good right now; and most of those have been popular for a while.

And I would say the "only listen to music to impress others" crowd is probably a better description for those afraid to admit they really probably wouldn't give a shiat about the music they listened to if they hadn't heard it on the radio. After all, if the music hipsters like is supposedly obscure, then who is there to impress?

Sorry, no "LOL" here -- and Indie/Hipster music isn't that obscure anymore. When your band is in a cartoon ad for car insurance and you're played in front of millions at the end of Scrubs, a CW show or on a major soundtrack, you're not obscure. Not as well known maybe, but not obscure.

And pop music has always been truly awful -- You think The Partridge Family belonged at the top of the charts multiple times? Nelson? Debbie Boone? I survived NKOTB and Michael Bolton at the worst of times and remember hearing Starship played every hour on the hour, and it's not any worse now. Crappy music has been the fad for decades, and it sucks just as much now as it did 30 years ago - nostalgic filtering has just helped us forget the worst of it.

Again, "Fergie or Wavves" isn't the only option.

/would love to hear his favorites on the radio, but no one plays Porcupine Tree.

You can keep your punk, grunge, alternative and post-rock, thankyouverymuch.

/Barely remember Portishead as a one-hit-wonder from the dreadful 90s and Sonic Youth from the Simpsons.
//And if 'Belle and Sebastian' isn't Sebastian Bach singing tunes from Disney's Beauty and the Beast, I don't care either.

I'll try and be very polite and not flip out at you for your ignorance and just tell you to listen to The Late Great Daniel Johnston, which has everyone from Tom Waits to Beck to Gordon Gano covering his songs. You'll see why people say he's a great songwriter.

I never said there wasn't shiat. There's always been shiat, but there's also no Black Sabbaths, Pink Floyds, Beatles, etc to at least balance out the shiat. If it's not all Nickelbacks or Fergies, then it's the My Chemical Romances. If it makes me some kind of hipster douche because I'll seek out my own musical taste, then so be it. It's better that than to be That Guy whose taste hasn't evolved since high school or the lazy fark who wouldn't listen to anything if it weren't for a radio.

And wouldn't touch Pitchfork's flavors of the month with a ten-foot pole. Some of that shiat is much worse than anything that touches the Top 40.

Portishead had one hit, but they had a strong fan following. The rest of their material wasn't Top 40. Hell, Sour Times wasn't top 40, but it had something unusual, something most people had never heard before, so it became a hit.

i for one am thrilled at this news.

No. The songwriting is the awesome part... his voice and guitar playing are a bit harder to enjoy.

Anyway, Grinderman FTW. Hope this is the start of a North American tour for them.

i wish people who have no idea what the hell they're parroting on about would quit using the catch-all phrase of "hipster" to define whatever trend/style/idea passed them by.

My point is that you don't know much about modern music and haven't even tried to listen to most of it.

Trying is key. It's very easy to slate something without actually hearing it.

You might surprise yourself.
