Your headline sucks and so does Tom Morello.

Yea, I said it. Wanna fight about it?

I prefer Guitar Gods.

I'm not a big RATM fan at all but when he played Larkfest last year he did sound pretty good from 10' away through a brick wall while I was making jello shots.

Thorny4Pie 2009-03-09 11:40:38 PM
He was good when he was playing with Lock Up 20+ years ago in clubs in LA. He may not be a 'guitar god' just yet, but he's on the way.

BobtheFascist 2009-03-09 11:46:14 PM
Sounds like RATM w/o the whiney, sniveling stylings of Zack.

/I'm actually a big fan of RATM.
//Too old for the played out, marketed pseudo-revolution thing.

Look man, I LOVE RATM and Morello's heavy-funk style, but as a guitar player he seems to recycle a lot of his own riffs. But at least they are great farkin' riffs, so it ain't all bad...

Morello is one of the most original guitarists doing it today. He is also pretty damn fast when he wants to be. He just prefers quality over quantitty.

That seems to upset people

I guess you rule out effects users like Clapton, Hendrix, Page, Van Halen, Satriani and Vai (who use giant effects racks), Zappa, etc.

crockadock 2009-03-10 09:38:49 AM
its hard for me to really get serious about "revolutionary party jams." I always really liked RATM and in fact when I was a high school punk I thought I lived by their music. Not so mcuh anymore. Now I just prefer music that is good to get drunk too. But seriously? "They'll need something to listen to on their iPods while storming Wall Street." What, when Apple's stock bottoms out?

TM is quite over-rated.

Every band he's been in has been carried by the other musicians.

Killswitch? Check.
Octave box? Check.
Stattico picking? Check.
Wah? Chack.

You are now ready to play guitar for RATM.

Yeah, sorry...he's not a great guitar player. Awesome user of toys to great effect, but the difference between Morello and the Hendrixes and Zappas and Van Halens is that when you unplug those guys, they're still monster guitar players.

Guitar god? No.

Innovative and original? Yes.

There is a difference. A guitar god is innovative and original, and still able to display mastery of the instrument both musically and physically.

See: Andres Segovia, Al DiMeola, Pablo De Lucia, John McLaughlin, Joe Pass

Actually, Morello has been doing a lot of acoustic lately. He was featured in Guitar Player in the fall (November/December issue?) for his solo acoustic stuff. His stuff can be found here:

I find your comment to be shallow and pedantic.

crockadock 2009-03-10 10:40:47 AM
I hate it when people bring up Van Halen when talking about great musicians. Alls I can see is David Lee Roth doing a jumping-toe-touch-split wearing tights and the gayest poofy socks i have ever scene. I'm not saying members of Van Halen that play instruments are lacking in talent, they just pick a horrific vessel to convey their musical message to the masses.

I am saying anyone that allows david lee roth in a band with them automatically exempts themselves from "god" status

bush 2009-03-10 10:47:37 AM
And beyond that, EVH was a great guitar player, but he did lack a lot of diversity in his playing. A lot [most] of what he played was blues licks.

Yeah, he changed the face of rock. And he did it damn well. But I know many more people who can play Eruption than can play any number of classical or jazz pieces with the same ease and expression.

Morello's a very creative guy, musically. There's a bunch of guitar tutorials posted on YouTube with him - he shows his techniques, and there are little moments where you see just how damn good he is that don't really come through in his Rage stuff.

I enjoy me some Rage, I really liked Audioslave, but the whole uber-political thing gets tired after a while. (That's why I liked Audioslave - they dropped the revolutionary stuff and just *played music*. Plus, Cornell trying to sing Rage stuff just didn't work anyhow...) I'll listen to this and see how it goes, but if it's too political... eh.

what a guitar god may look like:

almost all guitarist use effects, it does not make you a bad guitarist. You still have to be able to play the guitar to use the effects.

though I agree RATM's political headiness got tiring after a while, especially since their videos became increasingly as edgy as someone wearing a Che Guevara t-shirt, but Audioslave was pretty damn boring.

i cant believe people are still defending tom morello as a good guitar player. no technique, cant solo, plays the same ultra lame riffs all the time. what is good about this guy? and how the hell do people think hes 'creative'? his lame sound effects have been done for eons by every 14 year old kid in his room at some point. if youre impressed by that garbage adrian belew would make your head explode.

Oooh yeah. He's an unreal player. Damm! He's good.

I don't like or enjoy listening to Morello's music but he really is a much better guitar player than his work in RATM would suggest.

I can totally understand how a lot of people think he just uses the toys (since that's what he did a lot in RATM) but I also understand that a lot of people who say that haven't taken 30 seconds out of their life to find out how wrong they are.

buuuuut either way, won't be listening to any of his new material because it's not my cup of tea

I took that for granted. Any musician making money in the music business today has talent. Yes, even those artists we love to hate.

I beg to differ. If by "talent" you mean the ability to rip off countless other people with real talent, I give you exhibit A:

3StratMan: Guitar god??? Gimme a break.

Hell of a long line for god status after THESE GUYS:

So he's too young, you're saying? Insufficient blues usage? There are obviously a pantheon of deities in this spectrum; who's to really say that he doesn't qualify.

Nice job throwing Uncle Ted in there :)

morello isn't the best guitar player on the planet but he's pretty damn innovative (yeah, pedal use can count as innovation), but boots kinda went downhill after "genocide and juice," if you ask me. all his rhymes sound the same now, same cadence, same rhyme scheme. i miss e-roc

couldn't have said it better myself. love a lot of the music in rage and audioslave minus the zack vocals anyway. plenty of really cool riffs, but there's always one part of the song thats terrible.

in every song i've heard featuring morello there is a "guitar solo" which is basically morello wanking away into some kind of noisemaker for for 45 seconds. they don't fit the flow or the mood of the song, they sound tacked in, and they last way too long.

its like he decides, "ok, i have this new pedal and i need to use it in a solo, and also i havent wrote a solo that sounds like a cat being skinned alive so ill try to immitate that."

guitar god is quite a stretch. i respect his talent to an extent but come on. so can we change his title to like "guitar pedophile cardinal?"

tom morello does not play guitar. he plays one of these, and it is not an instrument.
