(Stereogum) Stupid Almost no one at Hampton Phish concert paid face-value for their tickets, most paying hundreds extra and cops confiscated $1.2 million in illegal drugs and $68,000 in cash. But hey, here's a free bootleg of the show   (stereogum.com) divider line 40

now that it seems apparent that the music industry can no longer fark us in the ass with cd prices, it seems they're trying to fark us with ticket overcharges, as we recently heard with Springsteen, Leonard Cohen etc... At least, I see the press is being very vocal about it, which is good

because the way the music biz is , the last thing they should want to do is alienate people who are still willing to pay 50-60 bucks for a show

Hender [TotalFark] 2009-03-09 09:05:40 PM
With Phish, it's not really a bootleg. They encourage fans to record and circulate their shows.

nstutsman [TotalFark] 2009-03-09 09:12:58 PM
Considering Phish also released all 3 shows FOR FREE in mp3 format on their website, no, I don't think a bootleg will be necessary. I'm kind of curious as to the validity of those numbers too.

/have listened to all three, sounded like good times...

Was the "Stupid" tag meant for the event, or the headline? I feel stupider after having to parse that.

Stray Slacker 2009-03-09 09:26:38 PM
Yes, by all means, complain about a band releasing a soundboard copy of their shows for free just hours after the performances. Stupid tag is for you, I saw you with a ticket stubby.

Brodan [TotalFark] 2009-03-09 09:26:50 PM
Yes, legal system, please protect us from the evil Phish fans. I feel safer knowing those dangerous hoodlums are off the streets.

Sounds like a hoard of self-entitled, upper-middle class and up, white college students who thought they could "buy" a dose of "cool". Silly hipsters.

I have hated Phish ever since they told me that I had cancer.

I was going to ponder how anyone could do something stupid enough to get caught with drugs at a Phish show, but then I remembered: drugs.

Seriously, though -- how does this work at this kind of event? I imagine the police posted around the toilets salivating like wolves for the tiniest infraction or whiff of the olde urban cabbage since they know their chances of making a bust are higher than the crowd itself.

194 farking arrests. Sounds awful. I'd be paranoid sober.

Pronto_Breakneck 2009-03-09 10:12:40 PM
I worked door security at a Phish show in Boston about 17 years ago. We took a truly tremendous amount of drugs from people.

It was really great. I didn't need to buy weed for at least a month after that.

$1.2 million in drugs confiscated? At one show?

Assuming pot is the drug of choice (and everything else a hell of a lot easier to hide) how on Earth is that possible?

The value of confiscated drugs is frequently exaggerated by police to make themselves look good.

Exactly. Very few of their songs I can actually stand and I really detest the whole jam band thing.

/jamming in the basement with friend musicians = good
//jamming on stage in front of paying customers = lame

Don't like it? Don't buy a ticket.

If all the tickets are being sold, then that's the equilibrium price for the ticket. Period.

Actually, if ALL the tickets are being sold, then they're still underpriced. Equilibrium price for a concert ticket would end up with a single unsold seat.

yeah, pieces like fluffhead, divided sky, foam, and you enjoy myself are really simple and crappy songs. the notes are so random and the rhythms are obviously wrong because its not 4/4 the whole time.

Ticketmaster != the music industry, sorry. Ticket overcharges do not come from the bands, the record labels, the RIAA, or anyone else in the music industry.

The ticket markups come from Ticketmaster, an event ticketing monopoly that sells tickets to bull riding, the Harlem Globetrotters, Disney on Ice, and yes, concerts.

Well knowing how police calculate the price of drugs 1.2 mil = 5 joints and 6 ecstasy pills.

Phish is playing the Fox Theater in St. Louis in June. Only holds 4500 people, I think. That's going to put some dents in trust funds!!!

I had a ticket to see Yes at the Pier Six Concert Pavilion in Baltimore. Not seeing that hurt, as it is a SWEET venue.

Also, apparently people have never heard of archive.org.
