Haha, it's funny, but ever since the criticism for how he sounded on "Turn on the Bright Lights," the lead singer has stopped sounding like Ian Curtis.

Funny, too, since they vehemently denied being influenced by/TRYING to sound like Joy Division.

But I don't have enough information together to get a warrant for Carmen Sandiego yet! =(

One of the few bands out there I actually like.

Hm. Let's hope they can get the sound from TOTBL back; that was a pretty fantastic album. Antics was great too, but after that. . . eh.

They're as retro as the day is long, does it matter who they're aping?

They were a nice novelty when they initially rose to prominence. At first their blatant Joy Division rip-off annoyed me, but I ended up liking Turn On the Bright Lights pretty well. But it wasn't something that was sustained through later albums.

I'm not a huge fan, but I think this is one of the greatest/creepiest videos ever.

"Obstacle 1" is an amazing track.

Unfortunately most of their other songs sound pretty uninspired.

I actually like them, but I can't explain why the monotony of many of their recordings doesn't bother me.

Slow hands is a decent song

Meh, wake me when britpop starts sounding like Suede and Blur again. Jesus, even The Smiths were less morose than Interpol.

No way. Interpol has a catalog of depressing songs, but they aren't anything like The Smiths.

Interpol doesn't have songs, so much as monotonous droning. Evil is the closest thing they have.

Paul Banks dates supermodels. I'm sure his life in general is a little more uplifting than Morrisey.

I really like the first four songs on "turn on..."
then it somehow goes downhill, IMHO, quality wise.

but "Antics" is a pretty damn solid record. consistantly listenable. great songs.

i don't have "...love to admire" though i listened to one or two tracks.... it was meh. maybe i actually need to buy it and give it a chance lol.

I don't go out drinking with Paul Banks or Morrissey, do I? So why should I care about how uplifting their lives are? At least Moz can carry a tune.

/buys CD's still
/lawn. off.

Hey, if it means I get to spend another show staring at the lovely Carlos D. it's all good with me.

/They are very nice guys

Everyone should listen to Interpol until you like them...

Either that or just kill yourself cause you're an idiot.

Nah, Jesus just tossed your salad enough that you turned gay, that's why you listen to Interpol.

I liked how they kind of sounded like Joy Division. Joy Division is long long gone, New Order is long gone.

yeah, this. A farking great first track, but not all that interesting of an album otherwise, outside of a few moments. I haven't heard anything since, but has the singer learned about instrumental interludes? I swear, aside from the first track, he sings nonstop and it just sound spastic.

yup. there's instrumental interludes on some/most of the tracks on "antics". If you haven't heard it, i suggest you pick it up, or at least listen to it at your fav. music store. it doesn't go downhill after a few tunes, but it doesn't have any massively high points, either. It's just consistantly pretty darn good for almost the whole album.... [i haven't listened to the last 2 tracks very much though]
but yeah i can see what you mean, re: sing nonstop / spastic. like on "obstacle 1". I can especially see the Ian Curtis comparison, on that song, and a few others.
btw, that drummer they have, he's awesome. i love the drum work on "obstacle 1", and others too.

I farking love Interpol. "Our Love to Admire" is just absolutely incredible. One of my favorite CDs of the past few years. Love it.

Ooooh, another album to look forward to this year. Though I'm embarassed to admit I didn't have Turn On.

/fixing that now

Poorlytoldjoke [TotalFark] 2009-03-10 02:22:50 AM
I like Turn on a lot, and Antics also. Our love to admire was horrible.

Can anyone explain to me the stupid boating metaphor on Antics. Every song has some mention of sailing off to sea. It's sort of unnerving.

samperkinsdog 2009-03-10 10:19:40 PM
they may have cribbed a lot of style from joy division, but they stole more than a little sound from kitchens of distinction.
