Agreed. I vastly prefer their version.

Ummm... nope.

Proof: Play each version on the juke box at your local dive; see which one gets you laid and which one gets you beat up.

Bruce does a much better version. It's not a BAD cover, though.

HappyHarryHardOn [TotalFark] 2009-03-08 11:06:06 PM
for some strange reason, I like the Frankie goes to Hollywood (the album version) better than the Bruce version. It's harder, more energetic and it doesn't have that corny sax solo

but all respect goes to the original composer, because that song has my vote for one of the best lyrics ever written

TheMega 2009-03-08 11:17:44 PM
Yes, much better version... and I would play it on the jukebox without any fear. Believe that is the first time I've even seen what that group looked like... nice white gloves LMFAO

"That's twice in a row..."

"Welcome to the Pleasure Dome" is a great album, its got "Power of love", 'two tribes" and not only do they cover Bruce brilliantly but they also do an amazing cover of "Do you know the way to San jose"

/the funny freddie-mercury-looking dude, he does nothing in this video but dance around and play a tambourine that no one will hear

Part of the reason Bruce's version is better is because HE WROTE THE SONG

And-1 2009-03-09 01:44:54 AM
Awesome track! And put me in the "better than Bruce" column. I always found Springsteen's version too obvious, and plain. This one has an edge, and a little surprise to it. Never seen the vid for this one either. Great find.

HappyHarryHardOn: "Welcome to the Pleasure Dome" is a great albumfark yeah, That album rocks (in a power-gay-disco-rock kinda way).

/the funny freddie-mercury-looking dude, he does nothing in this video but dance around and play a tambourine that no one will hear

He is actually quoted on the liner notes of that album saying basically the same thing - "I don't sing, I can't play anything - I guess I can dance a bit, and I have some nice clothes" (or somthing like it). He had no great illusions as to his role in that band.

Yup. Frankie was born to run.

Away from a bunch of rednecks trying to crucify him on a fence in Wyoming.

Just for the sake of being contrarian I'll point out that there are many, many songwriters for whom this argument will hold no water, the prime example being Bob Dylan.

guy_smiley 2009-03-09 06:52:09 AM
Album version:

"sorry, left my card at home."

"so, you were late, as well - that's two times on the run, one more time and the supervisor says he's gonna put ya on daily sign-in..."

"HA!"

FiendishFellow05 2009-03-09 07:37:13 AM
That was a decent cover.

Regardless, FGTH performing that...is vastly disturbing...for some reason.

/Frankie Goes To Hollywood is a really, really strange band.

liquidlen [TotalFark] 2009-03-09 07:37:34 AM

/and that's all I have to say about that
//FGTH actually played live? wow.

Richard Saunders: Proof: Play each version on the juke box at your local dive; see which one gets you laid and which one gets you beat up.

Your premise is faulty. One does not go to a dive to get laid. One goes to a dive to drink and the only penetration that may be considered shall be of the dart-into-dartboard variety.

And one sure as hell doesn't play any version of "Born to Run" on the jukebox in a dive. Too obvious. You go for a B-side, which in the case of the song in question would have been "Meeting Across The River" if I remember right.

Or see which one gets you laid with a woman and which one gets you laid with a man.

To this day, I hear this upon listening to that song:

"Blinded by the light...wrapped up like a douche, another runner in the night..."

/heard it that way long before "douche" became an insult

Amazing to see all the wankers coming out in favor of Frankie.

That band was a joke 20 years ago and they are a joke now.

It's ok if you like bad dance music played by guys who were more
interested in showing off their homosexuality than their musical
skills but don't be a revisionist about it;t hese guys were never a rock band and doing a bad version of an iconic rock song isnt going to make them one.

And 'Badlands' for best Springsteen lyrics.

if critical reviews are your standard for judging an artist's recording superior to another then you may want to look into reviews of Springsteen's version of Born To Run and then compare them to review's of Frankie Goes To Hollywood. This would be the shortest argument in the history of the internets.

I will take that challenge head-on. this is from AMG (all music guide_), the farking bible of music reviews. Here is an except from their "Welcome to the pleasure dome" review:

", Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run" becomes a ridiculously over-the-top explosion that even outrocks the Boss"

That being said, I would to point out my Boobies, in which i said: "but all respect goes to the original composer, because that song has my vote for one of the best lyrics ever written".... but i still like a challenge

anybody else hate how there would be split-second 'jumps' in the video linked?

that was some mad bass playing tho...

/ still likes Boss's orig. version better.
// Hammersmith 75 comes close too.

I'll give them an A for effort, but it just doesn't work for me. Because because there's something quintessentially American about that song.

I agree. There's something about Springsteen tunes that just can't be duplicated by British Homosexuals in the 80s...or any era for that matter.

No, it's just the truth.
It's an amazing album, just as Springsteen's best are amazing.
Don't be afraid to expand your musical horizons, eh.

They got a little critical cred for having the balls to be openly and unapologetic gay, but sonically they were Duran Duran without John Taylor caliber musicianship.

for the record, only 2/5 of FGTH were gay. The three dudes that played the instruments are straight. Interestingly, they only got to play on 2/5 of the entire "Pleasuredome" album, as most of the tracks were done by producer Trevor Horn and various studio musicians, who also were members of groups like the Art of Noise, Yes and Asia.
