Men and women with the most sluggish response times are more than twice as likely to die prematurely.

Usually devoured by snails.

I hope this is true, I'll be living a long time.

Once, this sparrow was about to crash into my face, and I ducked and reached my arm out to block it from hitting my face. I actually caught it.

I remember in a high school physics class our teacher gave everyone stopwatches and told us we would measure our reaction time by how fast we could start and stop the stopwatch. I told her that this was nothing more than a measurement of how fast I can hit two buttons, and she literally started yelling at me. Anyway, after this nonsense I clocked in a .3, .4, and another .3 seconds and she told me I cheated because those were "olympic" times. I told her those were "Metal Gear Solid torture level" times and she gave me detention.

Yes, I was a dork.

Reaction time is directly proportional to the length of the nerves from your brain to the part of the body "reacting" or reflex loop the signal has to travel through... i.e knee -> spine -> back to knee/quad. (why NBA guards are usually shorter/quicker, why it is difficult to catch a fly, "large people" always seem to be clumsy.. etc)

By saying reaction times indicate life expectancy... i dont know about that... this would just say that the taller you are, the shorter you will live...

Might make sense because your heart has to work harder to get blood through your body... kind alike a great dane...whatever.. im rambling...

/next time i'll RTFA

Unfortunately for you Farkers, longevity runs in my family and dying in your eighties is considered "dying young". You'll never get rid of me. My great grandmother was 101. My grandparents on mom's side died in their late eighties. My father's parents are still alive, even though he's a senior citizen already and both his natural parents are alcoholics. (We don't speak, but we know they're still alive through other family). He was raised by another couple, not his parents. I'm guessing they are 90 or so each. And acoholic. Wth?

Instead of reading the article, why don't you read the study? And about a hundred others.

This article pisses me off. It is very presumptuous.

Didn't RTFA, but I'm guessing there is no separation for cause of death here. In other words, people with slower reaction times are probably more likely to die of unnatural causes (car accidents, getting hit by a bus, etc) so their skewing the average.

It's obscure to those who don't know what it is, thus, it's not for them anyway

cryinoutloud: The authors say there is growing evidence that people with higher IQs tend to live longer and healthier lives.

It probably works the other way, too. JAMA had an article in, iirc, October of 2003 about how getting more money raised kids' performance in schools, on mental health tests, and on IQ tests.

Why does the article keep talking about IQ--the study is about reaction times. Reaction times aren't something they test when they test your IQ.
