Awww shiat, here we go again.
Damn it, I live in Michigan too, and becuase of our winters, and my job, I HAVE to have a 4-wheel drive (currently a Jeep Cherokee).

Man... I wanted to have fun this summer, but this is gonna spike gas again... stupid people with thier stupid buying stuff and stupid economics. Stupid

People with gas-guzzlers are squandering our natural resources (and polluting our air), simply because they can afford to.

Why can't they use some of that money for a good cause, rather than sending it out the tailpipe?

/Priorities. Ours are really messed up in this country.

Prices have been crawling steadily upwards once more, especially in the DFW metroplex. I dunno what that biatch is talking about.

Don't worry, by summer no one will have money to buy gas - even at 2 bucks a gallon.

Trust me, if I didn't have 2 more years to pay off my Jeep, and I didn't live in Michigan, I wouldn't drive a "gas guzzler". However where I work, and live, and the fact that our state never has the money to clear roads, its a must have.

(Though if i could afford it, I'd have a hybrid for the summer, and a 4x4 for the winter).

I use a pickup truck to haul solar panels and to do maintenance at several wind farms in Illinois. What now biatches?

This same thing. My trailblazer gets ~22 mpg highway, but I have to have it in the winter for work (I drive 5-600 miles a week along the lakeshore). At the peak prices I was paying $80 a tank, but there wasn't much I could do about it.

Then i'm gonna come back up again and fark you, big time...

So you ride a bike or at least a small motor scooter right?

Or are you just inordinately proud of the fact that your car uses 15% less gas and therefore you are "doing your part"?

Stay Cool Babylon 2009-03-08 04:29:03 PM
Not in my America, good sir. Those record fuel prices were just the sort of thing to wake our great nation into the realities of energy dependence, conservation, and maybe not sprawling our cities into wastelands where the same 8 or 9 restaurant chains and 10 or 11 retail outlets pervert the landscape. Sure, there are people in commie havens like Europe who may be distracted by American Idol or how shiatty Katie Holmes looks lately, but not my fellow Americans. I feel bad for those of you not privileged enough to share in the wisdom of my countrymen. To suggest that we didn't lear...I don't have the heart to keep this up.

With on the fly 4x4 both low and high. Don't forget that, its ABSOLUTELY critical. I don't want any of this rear wheel or front wheel only shiat, when I suddenly have 14 inches of lake michigan sitting in my driveway.

-- Or my absolute favorite, in March/April, when we get those flash freezes where the roads that are all soaked with rain turn into ice.

Remember when gas prices first hit $2 a gallon and everyone screamed bloody murder?

Then it hit $4.

Well, that achieved the miraculous result of convincing the public that $2 a gallon is cheap.

Ima4nic8or 2009-03-08 04:32:52 PM
Now maybe we can get back to driving decent cars. I am thinking that detroit goes back to building cars back like they did in the 50s and 60s, instead of the tinfoil pieces of crap that we have today. Then the buyers will come running back and it will be all good again.

It's legit. Not sure of the details, but companies are prohibited from selling too cheaply. This is to keep Wal-Mart, etc. from dominating the fuel delivery business.

Every time I go out and fill up my tank, I also fill up a five gallon can and add it to my emptied out hot tub, lid it and lock it up. Since 1997 I've been doing this, have only had 8 minor accidents, one charred puppy but mostly minor accidents. Does chlorine affect my mileage?

When gas went up I seriously modified my driving habits. After it went down I didn't change back. Considering a bike and a scooter also. I have no desire to be dependent on something so unpredictable.

One of my friends from teachers' college does something like this, as he took a posting in a tiny little town in the French alps. He rides a motorcycle for maybe 8 months out of the year, but once the weather turns, he hops into his 4WD Volvo wagon. And if he needs to move big things during the summer, he's got that too. The extra cost of insuring two vehicles is more than offset by what he saves on fuel (aided no doubt by the fact that gasoline hovers around €1.10/liter there). Works out well for him.

As soon as the US economy shows signs of recovery speculators will flood into commodities and drive the price sky high once more.

I have a 1991 Toyota Celica. I have a few modifications on it; I get an adverage of 36 to the gallon. I had a bet with someone that if I graduated from college in 2001, he would buy me an SUV of my choice. I failed to see the allure of such a deal, and the allure of a degree that would have been obsolete 6 months after I graduated.

Newer and/or bigger is not always better.

All cars (except the 500 or so electric cars) are gas guzzlers. You are not exempt from responsibility for this problem just because your car get a few more miles per gallon than someone else's vehicle.

We need lifestyle changes, not vehicle changes.

I moved closer to my job, so I can walk or ride my bike to work. I've only driven my car once this month for any reason.
Not everyone can do this, but everyone can do SOMETHING to reduce the amount of oil we continue to use.

nubbin: Every time I go out and fill up my tank, I also fill up a five gallon can and add it to my emptied out hot tub, lid it and lock it up. Since 1997 I've been doing this, have only had 8 minor accidents, one charred puppy but mostly minor accidents. Does chlorine affect my mileage?

WHAT THE FARK!?

I had nothing to do with it!

inconceivable: a bike like that is good for riding for speed, but not practical for commuting/ daily use

something like this would be better:

More than having a bicycle or a train pass, I think it's about having a plan.

Manage your life so you can get to your source of income easily without reliance on a fuel source that can get taken away from you.

Gasoline is a known bad bet.

man, I was hoping it would stay low so I could find a cheap Civic. Guess I'll stick with the trusty old Impala

Easier said than done my man. Don't get me wrong it is a good plan, but I can live in the same city as my ex who shares cusdody of the kids and we exchange them three or four times a week or I can live in the same city I work in. Either way I am driving.
