I prefer the original Shuggie Otis version.^

I remember being just a kid and knowing nothing about funk, but I knew "Stomp" was a fresh groove.

There is no "B" in that music - likewise Shakira, Rhianna, Brianna, .... insert one-named, female, pop singer's names ending in the letter "a", and all the boy singers who want to "git wit' you", here.

R&B my elbow. That there is pop funk (and I use the term loosely), barely removed from the dreaded disco.

was this before or after Genesis's Lamb lies down?

The middle part is eeriely similar

barefoot, there's a world between the Brothers Johnson and disco. Though I agree with Actual above in that the Shuggie Otis version is funkier.

What, doesn't everybody in funk cite Steve Hackett as a seminal influence?

This song reminds me of a piece of advice that you should likewise follow: If Samuel L. Jackson bails you out of jail and then comes to your motel and wants you to accompany him in selling guns in Koreatown, but you have to ride in the trunk- DON'T GET IN THE TRUNK

I don't know their whole history, but they worked with Quincy Jones a lot back in the day doing a lot of session work, as well as their own.

For their own work you might also look for "I'll be good to you", "Ain't we funkin' now", "Stomp", "Free and single", and Omorda's link above. Should give you a good sampling.

Legend has it that Leo Fender designed the Musicman Stingray bass specifically for Louis Johnson.

Great funk pioneers those brothers.

A BsJ fan (and a fan of bjs) and DAMYUM! this is mighty fine.

Some find a clip for 'I'll be good to you'.

And this: Is Shuggie Otis still alive? Whatever happened after his first album?

This song was in the Top 40 in the early fall of 1973, just before my car accident. I remember driving around (drunk) back then and some big AM hits were this song, Photograph by Ringo, and Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast by Wayne Newton.

Sweet! I have this song on a 45. Yeah, I'm old. Has a little Curtis Mayfield influence methinks. "Stomp" is killer, too.

/is that a Gibson Ripper bass? anyone?

I used to find loads of Brothers J albums in the bins on Hawthorne in Portland. Dayum, that place smelled funky.

Grabber/Gripper/Ripper .... one of the 3.

I have played the one with the sliding pickup and it was odd, and playing w/ your thumb just pushed the pickup to the rear position anyway. I did like the even width of the neck from top to bottom tho.

Louis Johnson wrote and performed the bass parts on MJ's "Off the Wall" and is the reason why that's Michael's best album.

Also: Shuggie Otis is amazing.

I also really dig the song "Land of Ladies" and they do an excellent cover of "Come Together" ... I never heard the stories about the stingray bass being made for Louis Johnson though. He's an excellent bass player, thats for sure.

Also... interesting tid bit... Shuggie Otis did write the original version (he's a great guitarist, son of a musician) about a letter that his girlfriend wrote him. Story goes she was constantly writting him letters while they were apart, and sprayed perfume on each one. So this was the 23rd strawberry scented letter he got from her. Just figured I'd swap legend for legend.
