Drug target identification is a big step...now the drug companies need to synthesize and invent a way to screen a few tens of thousands of compounds...then if the FDA likes it we might have something.

There are plenty of proteins that are downregulated by cancerous cells in order to allow them to proliferate. I see this as just another protein in this list. I really dont see any type of therapy coming out of this, at least directly. Its unlikely to be a protein therapeutic and finding a small molecule that activates this protein in a cancer is a tall order.

Sadly, the "cure for cancer... still no... wait, what?" type of headlines are themselves becoming a Fark cliche. Cancer is cured or almost cured a few times per year. Still no cure for cancer.

At issue is the enzyme CHIP, which experts say can stunt cancer growth by degrading a number of cancer-causing proteins. The enzyme occurs naturally in human breast tissue.

You men scientists. Haven't women been degraded enough over the centuries?

/just kidding, awesome news.

Assuming this goes nowhere, there's still some serious hope on the horizon. For one thing, Senesco Technologies is nearing human trials for a chemotherapy drug that reduces tumors dramatically, but has little to no ill effects.

Instead of the horrible way that chemo drugs work right now, basically coming close to killing the patient, this drug will allow tumor reduction with a few pills a day and living your life as normal. That itself would be an incredible step forward.

That's for the U.S. The article said it's number 2 in the world. I'm not saying they're right for sure, but that link doesn't disprove them.

I imagine when cancer is actually cured it'll only be displayed on politics, with quotes from both Rush Limbaugh and Michael Moore in the headline.
The discussion will be about the Jews.

Bevets might chime in, telling us how science is evil, destroying the ineffable plan of God without realizing that if it can be destroyed then it really wasn't all that ineffable.

there will not be one cure for cancer, there will be many. many cancers = many cures. like the flu.

Yesterday's Lunch 2009-03-08 07:17:55 PM
It really bothers me how the media just randomly picks journal articles to come out with a story to say "hey, this might be a cure for cancer!". Studies like this come out every week in many journals, and this nothing groundbreaking. There are dozens of proteins that when inhibited stop cancer progression, that doesn't make it a viable target for therapy. Not to mention that the study "injected human cells into mice" - xenograft studies are of very limited use. When they find a way to abate the activity of the protein in a true mouse model, wake me up.

/Yawn

bigvicproton: so great, solve cancer. and then what do you do with the extra 20,00,000 a year that stay alive? cancer, the natural correction.

Kill them at the end of the expected survival time for their particular cancer. They get a few healthy years instead of a few years of suffering.

Put them to work supporting oldsters.

Put them to work doing sex education and distributing contraceptives to cut down on the birth rate.

Send them out to preach Christian Science or Scientology or any other faith that leads its followers to spurn treatments that actually work.

Put them in the infantry, where they get to kill other people.

Put them to work in the space industry, moving us more quickly toward the day when we don't have to be confined to this rock.

Cancer destroys lots of possibilities. We're better off without it.

Silence you troll. There will be one magical thing that vaccinates us from cancer. Possibly an anti-bacterial, though those are basically the same thing.

Now I'd like to talk about mercury and autism for a minute...
