At least that was someone's pet. My station once had to save a BEAVER that had managed to get frozen to a lake...

And more recently...a cockatiel that had escaped and flown half-way across the city to a tree.

Unless the same dog gets trapped all the time, why?

Seems like saving animals is good training for when a person falls in.

Where is his Hooch collar? What's the point of having a massive beast of a dog like that if you don't give him the traditional collar full of rye?

My two-year-old St. Bernard is a little heavier than that. He's real cute until people come over. He loves to jump up and greet people with a lick on the face. Ever had a 135 pound animal with paws the size of a human hand tackle you? Not fun.

Sounds like fun. How often do you have to walk him, or do you give him an outdoor area to run?

Wasn't there a movie with a dog whose scrotum was frozen to a pond, and it was played for laughs? Believe it or not, typing "dog scrotum frozen" into Teh Google doesn't help with this request.

St. Bernard going on 2 years. He is a male. Has now exceeded the 200lb mark. Last four dogs were St. Bernards and though they may not be able to jump over a fence, they sure can find other ways out. The last one used to knock out fence posts..

At 16 months it's not really a puppy anymore. They grow big and they grow fast, which actually leads to some potential skeletal problems.

lithappens: Ever had a 135 pound animal with paws the size of a human hand tackle you? Not fun.

That's the best part! My female loves to jump, and I always catch her paws on my forearm and hold her up while I scratch her head. It's nice having a pet you don't have to bend over for :)

Also likes to climb up on you when you're sitting, and rest her head on your chest with paws on your shoulders. Guess it's a good habit if I'm ever caught out in a blizzard with her!

CyberneticPirate: though they may not be able to jump over a fence, they sure can find other ways out.

I had a 230lbs male many years ago that had no trouble clearing a 4-foot chain link fence. We started tying him up to a tree with a long chain (just long enough to barely touch the fence). He would still jump the fence, breaking the chain in mid-flight. After several iterations of heavier chain he was lugging around the stuff you use to tow cars with.

Then he started breaking the chain collars we used!

=Smidge=
/Six foot stockade fence just outside the chain link fence finally put a stop to it.

Of course when compared to drek like "Lost and Found" that's like comparing "Superbad" to "Meet the Spartans."

you go to academy for training, this is a waste of taxpayer time and money. if you have time for this, take the day off and give some salary back.

We have 2 Saints right now. One is 10 years old in a few days and is about 135lbs (old man = skinny ass), the other one is about 3 and about 165lbs and still growing.

Oh, and we have a bronze Newfie that is about 150lbs now.

St. Bernard rock. Just imagine a HUGE teddy bear.

Actually, Saints grow until they are about 2.5 years old, then they stop.

Best part is, it's in wierd spirts that make no sense. Ya know, long legs, no body. Back taller than the front, etc.

St. Bernard question: Are they picky eaters? Or will they gulp anything put in front of them?

They can cover alot in the academy, but there is no substitution for experience. Problems come up in the real world that are not even thought of by instructors (they can't think of everything) so on-your-feet problem solving is an important skill to train. This rescue gave them a chance to work on that. I'm sure if there was a fire or something they would have left, but if they are not busy, using it as a live action training session is a good idea.

KipperM: St. Bernard question: Are they picky eaters? Or will they gulp anything put in front of them?

Absolutely anything.
Nothing is safe unless it's in the fridge or in a cabinet.
Not the dining room table. Not the counter tops. Not the center island. Anything left unattended should be assumed found and devoured before you have any chance to stop it.

'ere's my St.B story...
When I was a kid I spent an Easter at my Aunt's house in the country. They had gotten a half dozen baby chicks and ducks for my cousins to raise and had left them on the porch in a cardboard box big enough for them to chill out in and not jump out of. So we come out to see the cute little bastards only to find the box shredded and bits of fluff intermixed. Their batshiat crazy St. Bernard, who was an outside dog, had broken the thick ass chain it was kept on and decimated the lot of 'em.
Merry farkin Easter.

Oh SURE, everyone comes out to save the Saint Bernard, but they chase the coyote into the icy pond with a helicopter. I see how it is around here.
