What's important is that the dog's family felt a sense of honored closure.

Yep, but their SWAT team will still shoot your dog without even breaking stride.

As an old Military Working Dog Handler, this a sweet remembrance of loyal friend and partner. Still, the dog died of kidney failure, it didn't take a bullet to save a life. Perhaps a smaller ceremony might have been a bit more appropriate

Looks like this city needed a reason to cry and mourn. Too bad about the dog but it's a little excessive in these times to justify the cost for a dog funeral procession.

Can anyone explain to me how a dog used by cops gets human legal status at taxpayer expense? Is a lifetime of being directed to bite black people really worth that much to society?

Michael Vick would approve.

An interesting response, considering cops don't seem to have a problem killing dogs when they are called to citizen's houses. Guess the only dogs that count are police dogs.

So that anyone who kicks or injures a police dog can be charged with assault on an officer and not just small time cruelty to animals.

It's just a dog. Not saying that nobody should care, but let's have a little perspective here. The main caretakers and anyone whose life was saved by that dog, you can be upset. Everyone else, stop being a moran. Dogs are not people, and even if they were, most people don't even deserve funerals like that. Hell, most heroes don't even deserve funerals like that.

Perhaps sticking a ham bone up the dog's butt and letting the neighboor strays drag him away would be more appropriate.

And as an added bonus, police dogs aren't bound by warrants. They can sniff-search you or your property passively.

No. The police union probably paid for the flowers and stuff and the cops were all off-duty. But we mustn't let facts spoil a good Fark cop-hating thread.

There is a good reason for some cop-hate, a number of officers cannot turn off the need to be in control. We understand that when you're on duty, you must be in control of every situation for safety reasons, however, the officers who cannot flick that switch off cause a lot of issues in the realm of public perception.

I should have stayed home instead of going to some stupid memorial that ate up all those tax dollars

Didn´t Caligula do something along this line. With a horse or a monkey...

These law enforcement people act like the nazis did when they swaggered through eastern europe. Dicks hanging out and their dogs up on a pedastal.

A funeral procession....for a dog. And, I´m a dog lover.

I'm willing to give you the benefit of the doubt and say that you are among the 12% of cops that are honest and honorable. That being said, make the other 88% of cops follow the same laws we are required too and you will see the hate drop off. Don't make excuses for the crooked ones and you will see an improvement. It also would help if you screened prospective police officers a bit more carefully. Quit picking the ones who were picked on in high school and have some kind of chip on their shoulder.

El_Swino: Yep, but their SWAT team will still shoot your dog without even breaking stride.

Came in here to say this. They will charge you with assaulting an officer if you kick their pooch away, but they can just gun yours down for being there and no inquiry is required. It's considered "destruction of property."

Not a cop hater, at all, but that inequity really pisses me off. Some cop out here jumped a lady's fence a while back WITHOUT A WARRANT, her little dog barked at him, and he killed it.

I remember the time in my region where it took the cops 12 shots to put down a dog. The first 11 were from pistols, the last coming from a shotgun, after they realized they couldn't hit the side of a barn. And this coming after another incident where it took them 8 shots. Don't recall why they had to shoot them, maybe target practice.

Anyway, the guy being hugged is what I've always pictured libbynomore looks like:

I sincerely hope this didn't come out of their taxpayer's pockets. If it was ponied up privately, they can do whatever the hell they like... but that certainly doesn't mean I agree with this kind of ridiculous extravagance.
