If you're old enough to need cholesterol medicine, you're probably having lousy sex anyway.

little known fact: Statins were first discovered in married Jewish women by Urologist, Eli Goldstein.

"The only molecule in their physiology which is more abundant is H20.." said Goldstein.

You think only "old" people have high cholesterol? Probably only fat people too?

Lack of sex drive is the least of your concerns if you're on a statin. That whole class of drugs sucks donkey ass.

They're actually generally well tolerated. Except for, you know, the occasional myopathy leading to rhabdomyolysis leading to renal failure. But then you get to be like House, so it's all good.

I have never known anyone taking one that has not had some sort of problem caused by it. Chest pain, muscle problems, even heart problems, etc. Shiat, don't listen to me, just Google "statin problems" yourself.

Myalgia and cramping are definitely the most common side effects, though not rampantly prevalent as your small sample would suggest. I'd recommend (if your friends are still on them) for them to switch to pravastatin. The newer statins have lower adverse effect rates.

I don't think so. So what's it to you anyway? You work for a drug company or something? I would never use one unless there was no other choice. Often people on these drugs don't even realize that it's causing a problem. They are usually taking so much stuff and have problems anyway. I see side-effects dismissed as something else.

I have seen first hand the physical and emotional damage from these farkers. Fark statins.

Statins interfere with the body's whole ability to produce sterol compounds. This includes the natural steroids besides cholesterol, hormones, terpenoids.v

Why is it a big surprise that interfering with a basic chemical pathway in the body has side effects besides reducing the level of a single one of many of the end products?

/first perceived the word "satin" and went HUH

If you choose to let your lipids go uncontrolled, you'll be more susceptible to a whole host of other problems. It's a cost benefit choice. I'm sick of people saying not to take something because they know 3 people who had bad side effects. Well guess what? Every drug has a side effect profile. You're putting a drug in your body, which by definition is a substance that causes a physiological change in your body. You spend your whole life not exercising and shoveling crap down your throat, then you don't want to take the medication to correct that? Fine by me.

What I want to know is, is your anecdotal knowledge enough to refute large scale, multi-site, prospective American studies which show a clear statistically significant benefit? Do you have the authority to tell people not to take statins? I ask, because what you're saying goes against guidelines that thousands of American and international doctors and other health professionals practice by.

I have seen first hand how tylenol can cause physical and emotional damage, should we take that off the market too? How do you know that what they were experiencing was due to the statins, as you said they are taking other medications and have other problems going on as well. What I would recommend, is tell your friends to exercise and eat healthy. You know what though? Their lack of doing that is probably the reason they were put on it in the first place. My guess is that because they've had a lifetime of not doing that, their lipid levels are so high that it's impossible for diet and exercise to lower it down enough that they don't need medications. But, you know what? You seem to know better than their doctors. Tell everyone you know to get off statins, and when they stroke out 10 years before they should, they'll have you to thank for it.

We've dicsovered that our flannel pajamas (hey, it gets cold in NH) causes a lot of statin electricity.

So you take the statin for cholesterol, then viagra to up the lowered sex drive, then something for the higher blood pressure, then an anticoagulant, because it thinned the blood, then some xanax to chill out from worrying about all the drugs you're taking...

Is this where we're heading?

I always thought the "I read..." thing was bs and often wondered why in the hell people always felt the need to type rhyming words and say that's what they thought was in the headline.

Then I read this headline and thought it said satin and my brain actually inserted the word sheets and I didn't RTFA and wondered why everybody was spelling satin wrong and thought I'd missed a meme or something but then I finally re-read the headline and went, 'whoa'.
So yeah... fark off, me.

ill_83: But, you know what? You seem to know better than their doctors.

You know what? Doctors appear to get a farkload of their information from drug reps. And drug reps aren't renowned for badmouthing their product, are they? A secondary source of doctor information is their corporate policy and/or malpractice insurance documentation, neither of which is going to be looking at "customer safety and comfort" as a primary concern. If statins are cheaper than a malpractice suit, that's what they'll push. Plenty of other situations where a medical decision is turned into an economic decision because of the current industrial climate.

That really does happen, it's called a "prescription cascade", where the doctor writes a prescription that causes a side effect, then misdiagnoses the side effect as a new disease and so writes another prescription to counter the side effect, but that prescription adds side effects of its own, and so on ad infinitum.

I'd like to say I'm surprised, but I'm not. I know many illnesses really do need drugs, but it seems like any old pill is getting overprescribed these days.
