I find this post commendable because it shows creativity in giving us two new types of horribly disgusting food. In this day and age, it's hard to come up with something completely new. I was sure this yet was another post about eating puffer fish or haggus and so was agreeable surprised to find something else.

Just the idea of eating a live octopus, whose suckers could conceivable still choke you, is pretty awesome as is the Braveheart joke.

And eating a bowl of scabs-- what more could you want out of life?

After reading the Wikipedia article on ackee, I had to wonder about how it came to be a food at all.

"Hey, mon...Jeremy ate dat red t'ing and he die!"
"I an' I gonna try some!"
"Okay, mon...how ya feelin'?"
"Like I's gonna die."
"HEY, EVERYBODY COME ON OVER AND EAT SOMMA DIS T'ING!"

Wasn't there some kind of oral history that said "you're gonna die if you eat this"? Or were there just early "scientists" who decided that there HAD to be a way to eat this stuff safely, and were going to find it come hell or high water? I just don't get it.

Partially developed duck-fetus egg. Apparently part of the appeal is the crunchy-soft bones. (Insert Whizzo Chocolate Co. joke here).

According to the Wikipedia article, it is illegal to import fresh Ackee fruit into the US (you may be able to buy it canned despite some problems in the past with unripe Ackee fruite being included), but I wouldn't be surprised if they have tinned Ackee fruit at the Grace International store on lower Bank Street, here in Ottawa, Canada. It specializes in Jamaican and Thai foods and I seem to recall seeing tinned Ackee on a recent trip to the store to buy Lychee and Longan, which are close, non-poisonous relations. I like the Longan stuffed with pineapple (looks sort of like translucent ghost white olives stuffed with yellow pimento. Very pretty.) Ever once in a while I feel like some Jello(TM). Lime Jello(TM) is great with lychee fruit. It makes a nice change from peaches, pears and mixed fruit (Macedoine de fruits, which is the most famous thing to come out of Macedonia this side of Alexander the Great).

Every year on the Jamaican National Holiday, which IIRC is August 15, the same as the Acadian National Holiday, they traditionally have a parade downtown with Mardi Gras costumes, etc. I almost always miss parades because I sleep in and they're over before I get out of the door but I have from time to time seen part of parades when on my way to the Ottawa Public Library Main Branch.

There's a Jamaican take away right downtown around the corner from Parliament Hill if you like goat, jerk, etc. I might have a look in. Why cook when you can take out?

Notice the clever switching between British and American usage on take out/take away and cans/tins. You can tell which side of the border I'm talking about.

Here's a recipe for Ackee and Saltfish:
Ackee and Saltfish

April 17th, 2008 admin Posted in Ackee and Saltfish No Comments »

INGREDIENTS:

1/2 lb Saltfish (dried, salted codfish)

12 fresh ackees or 1 (drained) can of tinned ackees

1 medium onion

1/2 tsp black pepper

3 tbsp of butter

1/2 a hot chilli pepper (ideally Scotch Bonnet)

1 sweet pepper

1 chopped tomato

1 sprig fresh thyme or 1 tsp dried thyme

COOKING INSTRUCTIONS:

Cover the saltfish in cold water. Let soak overnight (minimum 8 hours) changing the water several times (this removes most of the salt).
Bring a pan of cold water to the boil and gently simmer the fish for 20 minutes (until the fish is tender).

Chop the onion, sweet pepper, chilli pepper and tomato.

Remove the fish from water and allow to cool.

Remove all of bones and skin then flake the flesh of the fish.

Melt the butter in a frying pan and stir fry the onion, black pepper, sweet pepper, chilli and thyme for about 3 minutes.

Add the tomatoes and flaked fish and stir-fry for another 10 minutes.

Add the Ackee and cook until hot throughout. Stir gently to avoid breaking-up the Ackee. Thats it! Serve it up and enjoy!

***

If you have any modifications to make this recipe more delicious then feel free to leave a comment.

Sound good to me! I don't cook much but I have everything but the saltfish, Ackee fruit and chili pepper, which can probably all be purchased at Grace IF.

Note: I recommend you tell your friends and family about the Ackee fruit and Jamaica vomiting sickness the next day. Fugu is hard to find but Ackee fruit should be easy enough to get in major metropolitan areas.

Whether dying from vomiting and hypoglaecemia is better or worse than dying from paralysis and asphyxiation is hard to say. But your friends and families should be warned that they have just eaten something potentially deadly after you've prepared your quick getaway plans.

No disgusting food is complete without mention of huitlacoche, aka "corn smut":

(Wiki article, pops)

It's a corn fungus that causes TUMORS to grow on corn. Which are then harvested and consumed, naturally.

How can you smile while eating an abortion?

Sushi and sashimi are possibly my most favorite foods, with rare beef backstrap trying to nudge them out of the top spots. I've eaten fried cactus grubs and beans. Cold brain salad. Frog legs. Goat eyes. You name it... but balut, that's possibly the most disfarkinggusting thing I've ever seen and/or heard about. I have not even thought about eating that.

There's no accounting for taste, it would seem.

Eggs give me heartburn, anyway.
