My headline was better.

"Hey, why can't we say 'accident,' again?"
"Because 'accident' implies there's nobody to blame."

jonnypeh: so he is in opposition but is also a prime minister? interesting.

He won the first round of last year's election with just under 50% of the vote, but Mugabe launched a campaign of attacks on people in his political party and overall intimidation and violence that prevented him from contesting the necessary runoff. Because Zimbabwe's neighbours are screaming neocolonialism at any hint of interference in Zimbabwe by the west, the international community has been pretty much helpless to do anything besides documenting the human rights abuses. The African Union did the conciliatory thing and pressed for a negotiated government of national unity, which was sworn in last month. Mugabe has violated a lot of conditions he agreed to so far.

No matter how we may bicker and argue in this country... Thank God it isn't this bad.

Why couldn't someone have had a nice birthday airstrike on Mugabe and all his pals? They were all congregating in one place at a known time. It would have solved at least one of the problems plaguing Zimbabwe.

"They were hit head-on by a truck."

"These look like bullet wounds."

"It was carrying ammunition and exploded. Like this grenade I'm about to shove in your pants if you don't say they were hit head-on by a truck."

"Fair enough!"

With all due respect, Donbot, I don't think we should rely on an accident happening. Let's kill him ourselves.

They ran em fine until Europeans decided to take everything over and make them 'colonies'. Same with the Middle East. And Afghanistan. And India/Pakistan. Notice a trend?

Speaking as someone that has driven in Africa, there is a fairly strong chance that this was indeed an accident. They make Neapolitans look like Driving Miss Daisy.

That sucks.

I would love to have been a fly on the wall when Mugabe went to visit Tsvangirai at the hospital.

kinda reminds me of GOP lawyer Dana Jill Simpson who had her house burnt down, and was rammed off the side of the road in a separate incident. She was the one who blew the whistle on Karl Rove and DOJ shenanigans. and then Michael Connell, the GOP operative who was about to testify against Karl Rove on how election results mysteriously changed when the data was routed through his tech firm hired for Ohio to collect election results, just so happens to end up killed in a plane crash before he could officially testify. kinda interesting.

no he won't. they lopped off 12 zeros at the beginning of feb to make a zimbabwe dollar equal to the us dollar, but of course today inflation has already carried the zimbabwe dollar to over 100 per us dollar

The history of Liberia (never colonized), Great Zimbabwe (economic collapse), Mali (ditto), South Africa (Afrikaaners (who are as native as the Bantu are to SA) were prevented from oppressing the black population by Britain) and Ethiopia (invaded, but never colonized) would like to have a word with you. Guess what? Africans are people and people, especially those in pre-Post-Industrial countries tend to be ruled by ruthless dictators. In fact, the majority of the population in any given African country was born after the end of European colonialism. It's time to find a new boogeyman.

The reprecussions of colonialism last a hell of a lot longer than one generation, luidprand. Ask the Aztecs. ...oh wait.

True. I could chug an entire bottle of vodka and still be a safer driver than most of the people in the places I've been to in Africa.

You mean the rampagingly brutal nation that was overthrown by their client states, an event made possible by contact with the Spaniards? One of the prime differences - Mexico was both colonized and settled - the Spaniards established a feudal society which persisted on its own for centuries after colonization ended. That did not happen in most African nations (the only possible one I could think of is South Africa, with both the Dutch and Bantu lording it over the natives). In addition, the colonization of the Americas resulted in the deaths of 90+% of the population due to plague, something which also didn't happen in Africa, as it has had massive contact with the Eurasian continent from the beginning and had . Finally, the colonization of the Americas lasted a much longer time - Africa was not colonized by Europeans until the 19thC, which is about when South and Central America were shaking off colonial rule.

Far too many differences to really be a valid comparison.

It's no theory. There really was a conspiracy.

Unless it is discovered that the excess weight of the currency he needed to pay the toll at the bridge caused the car to go wildly out of control on a corner, which is also possible.

Nobody uses Zimbabwean currency anymore, it's all American dollars or South African rand. In fact, one of Tsvangarai's campaign promises was to pay civil servants with foreign currency.

I think it's when a pre-industrial society is on the verge of inventing a time machine, in order to skip over all the bullshiat before post-industrialism.

Mugabe + time machine = game over man, game over.

Given the prime ministers own party say there was no foul play and it was a one car accident, it seems like it was just an accident. Still, bad luck.

Sure, accident. How can you have a one-car accident? Just like that Russian guy got internal radiation poisoning by accident.

Not to credit Mugabe, but go to a T intersection. Accidents all the time.

Here is a great website written by Cathy Buckle. She lives in Zimbabwe and writes about her daily experiences there. It really is fascinating. It is a wonder she hasn't been arrested for the things she writes about the government and Mugabe.

I got this off Fark, so thanks who ever posted it before. Great find.

A one car accident = 1 car going offroad and hitting a tree. If the opposition party is say there's no reason to think it is foul play. They would complain otherwise, they complained a LOT before. For good reason, but it isn't like they don't often list their grievences to the world community.

It's a sign of the nation's poverty that they weren't killed in a small plane accident instead.
