That's much better than what I usually do on Friday nights - playing with my Jesus Lizard which is Built to Spill Tortoise all over Yo ....... La Tengo!

I like some random shiat, but I recognized absolutely no bands on that list. So either my life is (A) a hollow shell devoid of great musical experience, or (B) I am not a Pitchfork reader and that's okay.

From the list in your profile, you might actually like Tortoise and Yo La Tengo.

Yo La Tengo, awesome. I don't think I've actually seen them live since the early 90s. I may have to pay my friends in Chi-town a visit.

We used a Yo La Tango song for our wedding song. I hope the wife won't be gripped when I vote for a song of theirs I like better that isn't as wedding appropriate.

The live version of Broken Chairs (Built to Spill) is one of the best examples of sonic dissonance in existence.

While I am excited about this initial line-up. I am really disappointed they are not doing the whole "play the bands classic album all the way through". That was always the big reason I looked forward to Pitchfork.

I'd give Built to Spill a whirl too. I may be saying that just because I love them.

/not knowing every awesome band out there isn't a big deal
//and anyone who likes The The gets points from me

Well, someone recommended Muse to me last week and I found myself enjoying them, so maybe I'll go out and download buy some of those artists' music. What the heck, a person can only tolerate so much Morrissey, Depeche Mode, Bob Dylan, U2, Rolling Stones, and John Coltrane, so I'll give it a shot.
You farkers always seem to know your music, and I'm expanding my horizons, so thanks.

me, the house engineer, to jesus lizard bass player: "hey, we've got plenty of inputs. do you want to be mic'd, DI'd or both?"
him: "nothing against you, but i don't trust soundmen - so i just play louder than fark."

he did. and they were great.

I've become absolutely convinced that without P2P, it's damn near impossible to even know a handful of artists beyond "mainstream" ones, let alone listen and experience how much really is out there.

Yo La Tengo alone is reason enough for me to go to this.

I'm actually wearing a Built To Spill t-shirt right now.... they're ahh.... pretty freaking good....

Get "Keep It Like A Secret" My personal favorite album of all time....

Any bands that have sold a cd to anyone outside of their immediate family is not invited.

Built to Spill - awesome live

Yo La Tengo - AWESOME live

The National - REALLY SUPER-AWESOME live, Mr. November is my favorite performed song ever

Pharoahe Monch - terrible, absolutely terrible live

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - half-decent live

Vivian Girls - pretty farking bad live

and I'm probably going to try to see Grizzly Bear in May.

ComicBookGuy 2009-03-06 11:34:08 PM
Wow. I haven't heard of any of those bands. Am I right in presuming this is a hipster festival?

WhyteRaven74 [TotalFark] 2009-03-07 03:34:53 AM
The first night line up isn't exactly a hipster line up. Unless a bunch of respectable 30 and 40 somethings count as hipsters.

Technically, that was an All Tomorrow's Parties thing that Pitchfork was nice enough to include in their festival. I agree that was awesome, but having fans pick the set list has a chance to be even more awesome. I mean, hearing SY perform Daydream Nation was awesome, but I knew going in that I wasn't going to hear Schizophrenia or Expressway to Yr Skull, which made me sad.

I for one am looking forward to voting for Tom Courtenay, Big Dipper, Good Thing, and that one Tortoise song I heard once that was okay. (Never really got into them for whatever reason).

Or should it be From a Motel 6, Car, Then Comes Dudley, and the other Tortoise song?
