One thing is for sure, you would have heard him on And Justice.....

Still the mental image of this combo is funny as hell.

boomshakra 2009-03-06 12:22:41 PM
Lars' ego and lack of talent couldn't have handled Les's lack of ego and abundance of talent...it would have been interesting to see what direction Metallica could have taken had Les got the gig.

Well, the clip delivers exactly what the headline promises...but for some reason I was just expecting a lot more.

Kinda glad it didnt happen, what a waste that would have been. Rob Trujillo (as is Jason) is an execllent player, but you just cant tell on their albums.

You remember Napster? Yeah, it would still be thriving.

All the metal I ever needed to hear from Les is at the end of "Frizzle Fry" (the song not the album).

I remember seeing James or Lars discussing auditions for Cliff's spot, I think in the context of how they found Newsted, and they were making fun of the funky slap-pop players.

Didn't Hetfield say that Les was "too good" to get the gig?

I recently saw a rant on a message board from someone who hated the expression "cool-ass _____." The writer said that, to purge this abomination from use, everyone should mentally move the hyphen one word to the left:

wearing a cool ass-Reanimator t-shirt

Much better.

I saw an interview once where James says there were two reasons they picked Jason. One, he was good and he had played metal before. Two, he was the first bass player they auditioned that could keep up with their drinking.

That's how an interview should go.

I'm pretty sure the computer screen works like on tv, stage left is to the right for the viewer.

It was during these early years that the catch phrase "Primus Sucks" was started. It began with people constantly stating to the band just how good they were. One day when someone told the band they were good, Claypool turned around and said "No, we suck" and from then on it stuck.

Well, to put it simply, Primus sucks. It's pretty well known, actually.

Yes, there is footage in the article of James saying that. In other footage I saw somewhere else, probably Behing The Music, James or Lars made fun of the funky players that came in to audition.

Primus isn't to my particular liking, therefor, THEY'RE THE CRAPPIEST BAND IN THE WORLD. (also applies to every Beatles/Led Zeppelin thread)

I'm trying to imagine the fast part of "One" with Les playing the bass line from "Winona's Big Brown Beaver". Jesus, they wouldn't have lasted more than an EP, but it would have been CLASSIC!

How fortunate that they all had the the sensibility to know that Les wasn't the right guy for the job. They're all better for it, though it would have been interesting to see what Les would've brought to Metallica. That would be a great side project, though. I wonder if any of them have given any thought to that. Given Les' propensity for side projects, I bet he'd be up for it.

/Still need to see Electric Apricot.

I saw them live around '97, New Year's Eve I believe, and I can testify that live Primus, does indeed suck. The most repetitive drivel I've ever heard.

Primus Rules...... at sucking.

Love the band... seen all sorts of Claypool headed tours (flying frog brigade, bucket of fried bernie brains, primus, and les claypool).

Between the two drummers they've had, I gotta give it up to Tim Alexander. He may not be as jazzy as Brain, but he's a damn powerhouse.

Also, my favorite part of any les claypool show is that crazy contraption he pulls out at the end... the big whammy thing with one string that he whacks with a drum stick.

In regards to "Electric Apricot" I enjoyed it, but it wasn't exactly what I thought it was going to be. Turned out to be more of a "spinal tap" for Grateful Dead that some crazy Les side project. And although he held it down on the drums, he's a much better bass player.

Lars and James aren't much for side projects - see Newstead, Jason...isn't that what got him kicked out of the band in the end? i stopped listening to Metallica after 'Justice'. i don't think that Les was a good fit either, but just wanted to say that the ego differences wouldn't have worked even if Les was the former bass player from DeathMetalBandFromHell.

i love the youtube video from woodstock of Primus doing the intro to 'Master of Puppets'.

I know that Hetfield collaborated on a song or two on Anti-Pop.

But I think Kirk should take a tip from his highschool buddy, Les, and start wearing hats.

Because we can see the hairplugs, Kirk.

Primus is my little girl's favorite band (she's now 8).
Me, my hubby, son, who was 8 and his sister, who was 4, went to see them at DNR Constitution Hall. About 5th row just left of center. They let the kids stand on the chairs, jump on the chairs, and stuck us up front in the aisle, 'cuz the little ones couldn't see as well. Best I've ever been treated at any show.
She made her own poster (her idea) that said THANK YOU PRIMUS, and had a drawing of a stage and the guys playing their instruments.
I couldn't convince her 4 year old mind that PRIMUS SUCKS was ok. To her, sucks meant just that, which was totally stupid to her. I told her that was the point. She just looked at me sideways. Kinda like a Larry David staredown.

Anyway, not that it matters, but that will be one of my better memories.

Lars said it best when he said les is just too good. He would of made the rest of the band look like a bunch of ass-clowns.

I hope this whole "primus sucks" thing is some sort of long running sarcastic-ass fark joke, because Primus is good like shotgun-filled-filled-with-handjobs-going-off-in-your-pants good.

/or long running sarcastic ass-fark joke. which ever you prefer

I'm sure you're right about the ego differences. My guess is that there would have been far too much drama in Metallica for Les. That's one thing I've always loved about him. Just an unbelievable amount of talent combined with a sort of aw shucks mentality. Sort of an anti-Lars.
