Subby apparently confuses Rock Band with traditional video games. I'm not saying the Guitar games are bad, but they're not exactly 1st-person shooters or sandbox games. They're an entirely different apparatus aimed at a different (but often overlapping) demographic.

Didn't we have a story on this, like, 3 months ago? Game Informer broke this story way back, it just wasn't "official."

Remember, we all talked about how boring half the songs were gonna be!

I especially liked the part where Jesus was worked in to attract the attention of the religion thread flamers. Comparing Yoko's voice to that of a screech owl and introducing the anthropomorphic notion that said owl was vapid also tickled me in a way that I had not yet been tickled this morning.

It's true, it really isn't funny if you have to explain it.

Dammit, I really need to subscribe to TF so people don't keep chiming in with the totally awesome lines I was going to say before me.

I would imagine the Jesus part might reference how they declared themselves "bigger than Jesus" at one point.

But no, go ahead with the religion flamebait theory, I'm sure it checks out.

Actually a Beatles-inspired first person shooter would be pretty cool. Actually, a rock n roll inspired FPS would be awesome!

I could be Joey Ramone and teabag Fred Durst after spawn killing him! Then me and Joe Strummer could make a flag run pwning any newbz like Pete Wentz.

GH was made by Harmonix. Then they left the brand behind to make Rock Band.

Activision can eat a bowl of dicks for not doing what needed to be done to keep them around.

From a gaming standpoint, I can't imagine that The Beatles music would be difficult to play. Don't know if it's worth the $60, would have rather liked to seen it as DLC.

Yeah, somehow the people who created Guitar Hero...The guys who now work at Rock Band have made an inferior game to their original...

Not so much.

I play both, but RB gets far more time in the carousel. The track list is bigger and better than GH's. GH has gotten better with the GH:WT as far as their charting goes. Their charting went over the top on GHIII, which not coincidentally was when HMX stopped charting their game for them.

That's pretty much my take too. The Beatles are a big name band, but not one that seems to have music real fit for a stand alone rhythm game.

He's talking about the note charts. And yeah, GHIII and beyond the note charts suck. Rock Band is a far superior music game.

This is pretty old news though. I think they announced this last November or maybe even earlier. Glad Rock Band is doing it and not Activision.

Oh, and the Rock Band/Guitar Hero games have done a lot to bring new music to people that normally would never have heard it. And they've generated a renewed interest in learning to play real instruments as well.

Somehow? The response is clunky (especially with hammer-ons and pull-offs), the visuals suck, and while the DLC may be more robust, the 70+ songs that come with the game are 90% new-age emo crap. Oh, and the controllers aren't worth the plastic they're made out of.

Ah, thanks.

I've only briefly played Guitar Hero (III?) but I've played Rock Band a few times with some buddies and we spent a drunken night doing it. Good times, good times, good times. They both seemed similar to me but I haven't played each of them enough to be able to distinguish them other than I could play RB with my buddies.

Maybe you have to drop a whole sheet of blotter acid before you play the later levels or something?

*please lick page 12 of the instruction manual to continue*

But yeah, I have a hard time figuring out where the challenge is going to be, unless this is meant to be a greatest hits karaoke game. Don't get me wrong, that'd be fun, but I don't know if it'd sell the same.

Sandy vagina today?

They're similar enough that it really comes down to what you prefer. However there are some things in your post that are just bat-shiat insane.

If the response is off for you, recalibrate the thing in options. It's very easy to do. The visuals are practically the same. If you think 90% of the songs are "new-age emo" then I suggest you play the game for more than five minutes. And anyone that thinks GH's instruments are some how better made needs their head checked.

Though I'm sure you'll give an angsty reply the likes of which one would normally expect from a teenager...and all over a farking video game preference. Go play some GH and chill out.

/Really, the RB vs GH debate is just as bad as console fanboy flames

i am SO GLAD that rock band got this and not GH. While I have (and play) both of the "band" games, just getting going on a rock band session is so much easier (well, RB2, anyway) than GH:WT when you're playing with random friends..."No Fail" is well...essential...when someone who wants to play drums can't figure out which side to hit when the green thing pops up.

The song selection, to date, is also easily twice as good. yes, there is a bunch of indie rock stuff in the "free" 20 extra songs, but then again, half of the GH:WT track list is shiatty death metal or thrash metal or other sorts of music with words like "metal" and "rage" and "blood" in them.

There are only a few of those in RB and RB2.

Also, SONG IMPORT FEATURE. That one thing kills guitar hero, just by itself.

You can cut her songs from Double Fantasy and Milk & Honey to make essentially one Yokoless album.

good god already give it up. after about the 2nd time you play a guitar or band based game it gets lame. i remember the days when people use to have to actually have some skill to play an instrument. The other day i was playing my acoustic guitar outside and some kid went up to me saying he could play one by metallica so i gave him the guitar he looked at it and said where are the buttons and what are these strings? I punched the kid in the face took back my guitar and never want to play guitar ever again. Thanks guitar hero and rock band for killing the only instrument that I was somewhat good and enjoyed playing.

You aren't playing anything but simon says, it really doesn't matter what the music behind it is, they can easily make it the same 'difficulty' level.

srhp29 2009-03-06 03:17:19 PM
It's a video game. It's supposed to be challenging. It's also not a real guitar.

It is also supposed to match up with the music and when you are playing notes that aren't actually there, it becomes pointless to have the music going at all, doesn't it?

I fully agree with you on your comment about the instruments. I don't use the RB guitars. I still use the GHII axe.

CK2005 2009-03-06 03:17:22 PM
GH and Rock Band got old when they were called Parappa the Rapper and Britney's Dance Beat. A guitar controller doesn't change the fact that your gameplay has the complexity of something you could get on the Atari 2600.

No, they can't. Not if they are charting the actual notes being played. If you play these "games", you can pretty much tell how difficult a song is going to be just by hearing it...without ever seeing it in the game.
