Inconceivable!

I'm furious. I gave Obama those DVD's for Christmas.

But the Mail has learned it included classics such as Star Wars, The Godfather and Citizen Kane and was produced by the American Film Institute as a 'special request' for the White House last month.

That's actually pretty decent. Sure, it's essentially a "mix tape" but at least its not like it was picked up at Wal-Mart or anything.

/Grapes of Wrath sucks!

How completely British of him

I think it's a gift that's pretty representative of America, actually.

He's a RE-gifter!

MonkeyVegetables: "The Prime Minister gave Mr Obama an ornamental pen holder made from the timbers of the Victorian anti-slave ship HMS Gannet."

Sounds like a lovely gift. I think I'd rather have the DVDs, but that's just me.

In all seriousness, though, is it really the President and the Prime Minister who picked the gifts? Or is there a protocol officer who chooses all this stuff?

Angry Drunk Bureaucrat [TotalFark] 2009-03-06 09:42:57 AM
To be fair, Obama also promised Brown a Guinness bar towel.

eddyatwork [TotalFark] 2009-03-06 09:44:31 AM
If Obama had given him lavish gifts you know the republicans would be up in arms over the expense.

C'mon, cut Obama a break. He's new at this.

In other news, I still cannot get over how much Gordon Brown looks like Terry Jones. It's kind of creepy, actually.

Philip J. Fry [TotalFark] 2009-03-06 11:44:10 AM
Regifted from Canada. Brown should have kept this on the DL. Now we're going to have an international crisis.

...they both sound like great gifts, frankly. I'd be flattered if someone went out and got the bloody AFI to produce a selection of DVDs for me.

Maybe the Daily Fail would be happier if Obama had gotten AFI to produce something for the PM.

I Said [TotalFark] 2009-03-06 11:47:45 AM
I'm on the side of "Brown's gifts were much better then Obama's".

But then I don't really watch movies that often and the stuff Brown got him sound a lot more unique.

/"Star Wars"? A movie about a rebellion against an overbearing empire run by people with British accents? Nice.

And the entertainment industry does exceptionally well under adverse economic conditions.

MyrnaMinkoff 2009-03-06 11:48:51 AM
Good taste; I own 21 of those. I hope they were at least Criterion or Special Editions. DVDs win over a bomber jacket, though.

Umokay 2009-03-06 11:48:57 AM
This is kind of like the gift you want to get your dad for Christmas and you don't have enough money, so you ask all your relatives to pitch in 10 bucks for a "group gift". Your dad opens the gift, watches one movie and never looks at any of the DVDs again. Placing all politics aside, this is really a tacky gift.

When the fark does Obama think Gordy is gonna sit down and have a farking movie fest for 50 plus hours? With Charles and Camilla over for tea and biscuits?

To all the Brits (however much you may have wanted and liked to see Brown humiliated) I am sorry for this lack of respect and courtesy, whether it was intentional or not.

brainiac-dumdum [TotalFark] 2009-03-06 11:49:13 AM
The stuff Brown gave Obama sounds very fancy and all, but I'd much rather have the DVDs. Then again, I'm not British nor am I fancy.

Aside from how crappy the gifts are (and they are really pathetic) I'm continually amazed at what the British Papers characterize as "news." Before I came to Britain I just thought it was all tabloid junk that no one read, nope people actually care about this crap.

Has anyone read anything that would suggest this was a snub, or was it more of an inexperience thing. Hmmhmhmmm, I mean, more of a "black" thing, ie, Britain spawned the slave trade so since I am black I am going to rub your white face in it even though it was a British man who actually ended the slave trade.

As someone who has received more than one pen set for special occasions in his life, I beg to disagree.

Also, you've got to be kidding me. THIS is what you choose as your ultimate gaffe?

Oh my god, if Obama would have broken out the Sham Wows, I would have voted Democrat for the rest of my life no matter my political preferences. That is so full of win.

Yes, I'm sure he picked a crappy gift to make a point about slavery. I mean, Obama's black ancestors were totally slaves, plus biatch won't shut up about reparations. And with good reason, as it's really held him back from achieving anything in life.
