If nations such as the US, the UK, Gernamy, France etc are the adults; Iran, Turkey, Pakistan etc are the teenagers. You cant control teenagers ... you can only do everything possible to provide perspective and advice.
Sooner or later this elite Nuke club is going to be crashed by one of these unwashed punk ass teens ... and they'll either have the sense to keep the damned rocket in their pants or they'll use the damned thing ... people will die and the rest of the 'civilized' world will beat the living shiat out of them.

"They are a rational actor," Soderberg said of the Iranian regime. "They are deterrable." If the costs of pursuing the nuclear program are made sufficiently high, the panel said -- particularly through the imposition of sanctions on Iran's oil and gas sector -- Tehran's "cost-benefit analysis" could be changed.
-------

If they're "rational" and "deterrable", they won't use the weapons even IF they develop them. Unless someone invades them first, of course. I wonder who would want to do that? Anyway, this is a neo-con think-tank press release. Who listens to them anymore?

Right after Pakistan and Iran, the Defense Department ranks Mexico as the 3rd greatest threat to the US.

These indigenous natural resources include "yellowcake," the raw uranium ore that is converted to gas and then fed into the cascades of centrifuges. "Iran has enough yellowcake in the country to perhaps produce enough highly enriched uranium, if they go to that length, to produce perhaps fifty nuclear weapons," Schneider said.

The question a nation state has to ask itself: "If we lob a nuke at the U.S. will there be anything left of our country in four hours?"

The leaders of such states like their jobs and won't imperil their positions.

Non-nation groups? An entirely different situation.

Yes they COULD produce those weapons IF they reconfigured their centrifuge array AND had about 9 years to Wait, and that's only AFTER the went to the IAEA vaults, where they yellow cake is safely stored now, broke the seals and removed the Uranium thus telegraphing their intentions just a little bit, and that's just to produce 1 bomb....

to do fifty they'd need to mine every theoretically possible scrap of uranium that MIGHT exist in their territory and go through another decade of using centrifuge array to enrich it.

SO to sum up the article is just a wee bit alarmist...

Oh shiat! I'm gonna be as nervous over the next year as I was over last year! And the year before that! And the year before that!

Seriously, Iran's been months away from a nuke since like 1987.

cretinbob [TotalFark] 2009-03-04 09:23:28 PM
That means that since 1986 they have produced over 9000 warheads and had them deployed in 1988.

7of7 [TotalFark] 2009-03-04 09:26:41 PM
It'd be a good thing for Iran to have nukes. That way Israel no longer has the ability to trod at will all over the entire region simply because it is backed by the US. Mutually assured destruction is great for countries like Israel.

No, no, no!! We should all heed this warning and be afraid. All it takes is a little Uranium...I don't care what kind...and a couple of dudes slap a city destroying nuke together in a matter of hours, in a dingy basement using hand tools!! Run!!!!

I'm sure we can look back to Fox News' record of skepticism and investigative diligence from the days leading up to the invasion of Iraq.
Nope, no reason lack of confidence in their ability to distinguish fact from propaganda.

ChemicalRummy 2009-03-04 09:57:10 PM
Didn't we just go through something like this five years ago?

The moment that all the Fox employees sign up for boot camp, and Rupert Murdoch returns to his native country to raise a brigade of Australian volunteers intent on preventing Iranian nuclear ambition is the moment I will take Fox "News" seriously.

The thing is that I don't really see how Iran or North Korea getting nukes really makes the world that much more dangerous. Why would they be any more likely to use them than anyone else? Ahmadinejad and Kim Jung-Il aren't apeshiat crazy like Fox News would have you believe. They both know nuclear weapons are only useful if you don't use them. You actually do use one, and all bets are off, and you lose all support and sympathy in the international community. They both know using them would be the end of their nations, and their allies wouldn't say shiat about it.

I am far more scared of Pakistan's nuke program than Iran's. Iran's seems to be dedicated to building a nuke for themselves. Pakistan's is loaded down with religious nutbars who I don't trust to not slip shiat to the Taliban or another group like that, up to and including the guy who lead the damn thing.

The yellowcake is a lie!

I've got nothing serious to comment on this, but I remember hearing a good few years back that the CIA supplied nuke plans to the Iranians that were fudged in a way to set back the Iranian nuclear program a few years (through a third party I'm guessing). They then screwed it all up by informing the Iranians where the flaw was!

This could very well be untrue but I remember reading about it. And I've had no luck finding it on google. Does anyone else remember this story?

At least Israel will do what the Democrats don't have the balls for. Apologists, let me put it bluntly - we don't have time for you people to say "Oops, our bad, you were right." When you get to that point, hundreds of thousands will be dead. This is a national security threat.

So Israel now feels compelled to attack Iran. Too bad she doesn't feel compelled to make peace with the Palestinians, stop seizing lands illegally and allow the formation of the Palestinian state.

Oh and declare she has nuclear weapons.

I think Mexico is a bigger threat than Pakistan or Iran because it's closer. While we need to be concerned about them making nukes. Mexico continues to implode in our backyard and the border towns are already starting to feel the effects. We need to increase patrol on our borders and try to keep this drug war from entering the US.

Lawnchair 2009-03-04 11:29:31 PM
Enrichment is, of course, entirely an unnecessary step in bomb-making.

Unenriched uranium, in a graphite or heavy-water reactor will breed Pu-239, which can be used in an implosion bomb.

At least five of the countries with nuclear weapons (US, USSR, Britain, France and India) all went with plutonium bombs (from non-enriched-uranium reactors) for their first tests. China and Pakistan went with the enriched uranium route, which can make bomb design easier.

Mexico is only a significant threat because of the US policy of zero-tolerance drug prohibition.
