I like both of these bands.

Wow! American musician criticizes Canadian musician for being rude and impolite. Now that's change we can believe in.

/Wayne Coyne is teh win

Finally, someone is willing to ask the tough questions.

I really tried to like the Arcade Fire. I tried so hard. I can't bear them.

Who? And who?

Precious Roy's Horse Dividers: I like both of these bands.

So do I. Wayne is an insanely nice guy in real life, so he's got some leverage. But still, even if other bands ARE jerks, it's not nice to go around telling everyone that. That just makes YOU are.

Wayne Coyne and the Arcade Fire. It's right there in the headline.

Correction: That just makes YOU a jerk.

I've gotta stop talking to someone in the next room while I type.

You probably haven't noticed, but he does this in every music thread that's not about radio rock.

Flaming Lips are kinda big though. They've been mentioned on Fark in a billion threads, there's a Farker with their name as a handle who's always in the music threads. Videos have been posted. So it's just kind of a stupid joke at this point. I've only heard of Arcade Fire because I saw it mentioned on Pitchfork though. I have no idea who they are.

Kinda like the Lips though, and if Wayne is calling them out, maybe it needed to be said. What's the other guy got against pot paraphernalia and confetti, anyway?

Who's the "he" in that sentence? I comment on about one music-related thread a decade.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that if Wayne Coyne thinks they're dicks, they're dicks. Doesn't mean you can't still like either band though. No one would listen to anyone if you didn't listen to bands that were dicks... except the Flaming Lips.

It is a rare instance in which I care about the actual musicians themselves, but then I don't go to shows much and am impressed by the music just as infrequently.

It isn't like rock music is supposed to be lovey-dovey pretty-princess music in the first place. Wayne's a modern hippie, sure, and that's fine, but there's just as many musicians that the world gave up on who are only returning the favor and you'd be fooling yourself into thinking that rock music doesn't absolutely thrive on that, for better or worse.

And just for the record, I enjoy Arcade Fire and The Flaming Lips both.

the best band on earth right now

AgentOrangeDrink 2009-03-04 08:29:12 PM
Both are pretty overrated. The Lips put on a really cool live show the first time you see it, but after that you realize it's just the same thing over and over again. Planned mayhem is never cool, but it's still more fun than the Arcade Fire sniffing their own farts, even though they have a couple really good songs.

I don't know, I've watched a lot of their interviews and they seem to be really professional and genuine people. I don't know what his problem is, but it seems like all he does is rag on musicians if they aren't total sweethearts.

And he says they're dicks to their audiences. I've seen them 3 times and they regularly chat with the audience, go down into the crowd during songs and let the audience crowd around them and sing along ... I guess they could literally suck everyone's dicks too, but I don't think Wayne does that so why expect it out of Arcade Fire?

AdolfOliverPanties [TotalFark] 2009-03-04 08:44:24 PM
I have the Arcade Fire's first CD. I've listened to it twice. Not impressed. Maybe their shiat has gotten better since then.

Wayne Coyne is cool as hell though. I remember him dissing R.E.M. many years ago.

Well, my opinion is just mine of course, but I think their 2nd album is incredible and a even better than the first. But I also love the first so, I guess I'm saying their newer stuff is better, but you still might not like it.

Canadian bands have a hard enough row to hoe without some American big shot stomping all over them for some youthful indiscretions. This is why the CRTC's Canadian Content regulation is so crucial. I don't see why the Government shouldn't require 100% of the content on Canadian radio to be Canadian. After all, they're OUR airwaves. Maybe we could legislate 10% Africanadian content, 10% LGBT-Canadian content, et cetera.

I would rather listen to Arcade Fire and Nickelback, which perfectly capture the Canadian spirit, than to Oklahoman cowboys like the Flaming Lips or to British élitistes like Led Zeppelin or the Beatles.

This should be extended to film as well. When I go to the cinema, I would rather see work from Atom Egoyan and ... Atom Egoyan than the latest from MgG or Andrzej Bartkowiak.

Yeah. Wayne has always seemed like a decent guy and AF and Beck most likely are jerks if he's calling them out.

Good for him.

Nice to see someone stand by for what's right, unlike almost every black performer interviewed regarding Rhianna getting beat.
And the Belle and Sebastion comment is pretty funny.

This would have been perfectly played if you hadn't thrown in that off-hand reference to Nickelback. So close to a perfect troll, my friend.

Its not all bad up there, Harry. Broken Social Scene and the offshoot projects surrounding it have done pretty well. The wife & I have seen BSS, Stars, and Apostle of Hustle many times and they are all very talented and super nice people.

Don't forget A Silver Mt. Zion/Godspeed You! Black Emperor

I really liked "Funeral" by Arcade Fire. I still do.
I mostly liked "Neon Bible"... thought it was ok at first, but then it grew on me. the production put me off for a little bit though... so muddy and crowded. but that just adds to the dark vibe running through the whole record... like Win said in an interview about the record and whatnot, it's "like standing by the ocean at night".

Owen Pallet / Final Fantasy...
i heard the title track [single] from "He Poo's Clouds" on D.N.T.O on the CBC radio a year or two ago... it was very interesting. there's a video too...

That is incorrect. The band that could not be farther apart from Belle and Sebastian is actually Throbbing Gristle.

It's not cool to call people dicks in the press, unless they're Hitler. Stop artist-on-artist crime.

I bet Wayne is just pissed that Arcade Fire put out a debut album that was more amazing than anything the Flaming Lips have done in 26 years (even Yoshimi).

If by every song you mean like 2 songs on their second album only, then yeah.
