FOX had a spokesman on, and he said the deal was negoitated three years ago. The deal was if the hotel consented to unionization for their staff, and the construction workers who recently renovated - the AFL-CIO would hold an event there. Apparently, they got a break on the room rates as well.

I've seen a lot press about the recent CPAC meeting, but nobody has said anything about the luxury hotel that hosted the CPAC meeting. Doesn't this set a double standard yada yada yada.....

Except cpac isn't using a monopolistic chokehold on a workplace to force employees to pay dues into an organization that then spends the money on conferences, political donations, etc that the worker doesn't necessarily agree with.

Other than that it is the same

Also, if kevinfra's comment was accurate, then that *does* change the dynamic. This deal was essentially a payoff to keep the hotel a union shop. Whether or not "union shops" should occur is another story entirely.

i75.photobucket.com

Of course, if you pay attention to the underlying metaphor that Chairman Morgan is making you realize that unions, as an economic behavior, are simply a trust or monopoly on labor.

what?

I was Unionized in Florida. Against my wishes. I then got zero promotions as the Union challenged all employee actions.

So I quit, and in my new job, non Union, I have had 3 promotions and moved to 2 different location, and picked my last 2 bosses.

Naw I do not need a Union. I now make 2x what the Union offered.

Interesting. I was a contractor and made the jump to federal service, the benefits got worse for the most part, but pay went up as they are paying me directly. I opted into the union, primarily to minimize the negative vibes of being a former contractor.

/I'll pay my own dental for the the job security I gained

Are you really this willfully stupid?
CPAC is a private, VOLUNTARY, political organization, not a group
spending it's members hard-earned pay on a party.

TheBigJerk: I'm disappointed, I was genuinely curious if AFL-CIO had gotten some sort of bailout/federal money.

Not directly, no. The idea as I understand it is that since the UAW is member of the AFL-CIO and the GM bailout is really just a union bailout, then the AFL-CIO directly benefits.

I guess Republicans are just more obvious with their corruption than Democrats.

A Dark Evil Omen 2009-03-05 02:24:10 AM
TheBigJerk: I'm disappointed, I was genuinely curious if AFL-CIO had gotten some sort of bailout/federal money.

Actually, they fought the September bailout pretty hard on the basis of lacking transparency and oversight.

Other, more radical unionists have come down on the AFL-CIO for not being enough against the bailouts and for making too many concessions to the capitalists, a position I tend to agree with.

But I don't think that's what grapefarker meant.

Yes they will...just as soon as we get rid of those pesky secret ballots. Now we will know who ain't votin' Union and we can illegally harrass explain the benefits of a Union to them.

//When you said Union...you WERE talking about the Yankees that fought the Confederates...right?
