Daft Punk is awesome. Tron is awesome. The only way it will suck is if there is too much awesome. All that concentrated awesome could fold into a black hole of suck.

Exactly what Daft Punk song was played at your prom in the 90s? And, by the way, it was popular the world over, that's how it made it to your prom.

Go listen to Vampire Weekend, subby.

By the way, the first person to say "Didn't Daft Punk sample that Kanye West song?" gets a free punch in the face, and isn't allowed to ever listen to music again.

i've just seen the footage they played at last year's san deigo comic con.

Mediocre choice. I would've gone for Tangerine Dream, Thomas Dolby, Jean-Michel Jarre, Biosphere, Squarepusher or Autechre. Or all of the above.

Also: didn't Daft Punk sample that Kanye West song?

Daft Punk? It will be interesting to see what they do with it, but I have to say they would not be my first choice.

Scoring a movie might be a little out of their league. I don't want to hear a vocoder sample repeating "Riding on my light cycle, riding on my light cycle" 50 billion times over someone else's funk record run through a filter.

No. No, it would not have been awesome.

jpinksto 2009-03-04 04:00:31 PM
Now will daft punk just take some one else's music, speed it up and call it a score? or will they actually produce an original score? as in, compose their own music?

A Tron sequel sounds as appetizing as Daft Punk, someone had an idea long ago and acted on it creatively. We got nothing now so let's just recycle it and call it ours.

Ishkur 2009-03-04 04:09:44 PM
Thomas Bangalter has scored for movies before, so this isn't a stretch for him and Guy-Manuel. They make good, scenic music.

Mattevil 2009-03-04 04:10:21 PM
Not sure how this will work out but I liked the comic con trailer and the Discovery album was pretty good. Probably would prefer a proper score though.

This.

You know, I'll go out on a limb here, but I would have gone with Magnus Birgersson (Solar Fields). For one thing, he's scored before (Mirror's Edge.) Next up, all his stuff is original. Third, he's got a lot of records under his belt. Fourth, and finally, he's probably made some of the most emotional and deeply moving electronic music I've ever heard.

Of course, he's probably not "Hollywood" enough.

Ishkur 2009-03-04 04:14:24 PM
Winktologist: Exactly what Daft Punk song was played at your prom in the 90s?

To be fair, Something About Us is a lovely ballad that could be seen as an invitation to slowdance at a prom. Too bad it was on Discovery, which was released in 2001, but don't be too quick to decry the notion that Daft Punk don't make prom music.

Ishkur 2009-03-04 04:15:24 PM
Besides, I think subby meant to say "90s porn music". That would have been more apt.

Getting Kraftwerk to actually release an album takes an act of God, Allah, Buddha, and Flying Spaghetti Monster all working together.

It would be cool though.

Actually, IMHO, they are. Not saying they are the best, but they certainly have a distinctive sound and their beats are fun.

I'd give her the ol' sawtooth. And then a square wave.

Honestly, does anyone actually remember the first Tron? It was godawful. Poorly acted, poorly scripted, poorly directed, but with killer special effects.

In short: a giant pile of awesome.

God, the only thing that could go wrong here is if they actually made a good movie. I have no fear of this.
