Somewhere there are parents who are either very, very proud of their children, or are watching their college fund being pissed away. But think, this way they can say that one of their favorite bands and their children's futures were destroyed by Yoko Ono.

Harry Freakstorm 2009-03-04 07:46:55 AM
Have a seat Mr. Freakstorm. I'd like to go over your resume. Let's see. Oh, you have a degree in The Beatles. We were looking for a Masters in Bob Dylan but this is very close. Very Close.

So, when you were studying The Beatles, did they ever mention the original drummer? Yes. There was an original drummer before Ringo. No. Ringo was the drummer. Fred Sanford was a garbage man character played by Redd Foxx on television. That's okay. You don't have to be nervous.

You know? My favorite album was the White Album. Yours was the Red Album? I didn't know they had a Red Album. What songs were on that one? The Beatles never covered "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald", Mr. Freakstorm. No. No. Gordon Lightfoot wrote it. Not Paul Harrison.

Well, I want to thank you for coming in. This is a really nice place to work. Be sure to wander around the parking lot after this interview concludes. We do some really nice landscaping out there. I'd shake your hand Mr. Freakstorm but my leprosy is coming back. You understand. The incredibly cute secretary in the see through top will escort you to Security. Yes, she looks like that all the time. I'm going to start laughing and e-mailing my friends about something totally not related to you. Good bye.

When I was still in college they offered a couple classes like Social Relevance of the Simpsons, or The Art of Video Games. They were always full, and I was never able to take them. Now that I'm older and have a job, I'm glad I never wasted my time on stupid crap like that.

The Beatles form an excellent window onto our society: One of the reasons they were picked was because they would be telegenic in the monochrome era with their dark hair and light skin. Mr. McCartney described the phenomenon of the Beatles as 'Hitler without guns.' They were a function of a broadcast era that will never be repeated. The British government was behind them. They needed to kick-start their tourist industry but had the problem that Uncle A. had bombed the place. Rather than rebuild, which would have brought up the recursion issue of no funds, they invented cool, and had people come to Liverpool to visit, which was a port city but not a traditional tourist city.
They form an excellent window on technology. Radar developers were deployed to their cause in analog signal processing, later to benefit Jimi Hendrix. They had bucket-brigade analog delay lines! There were practically no ICs then, so they had women soldering the thousands of Cs and Xistors manually. They were the only band to use separate equalization on their delay channel, giving them a leg-up on all their competitors.
And what is rock-and-roll anyway? It is white guys playing the blues, typically poorly. Interesting that the US market was so racist that there was a market for a foreign, honky take on their indigenous music. During the war, male harmony groups were huge, but no one wanted to listen to the wartime pop music after the war, allowing them to make their sound seem new.
Sociologically, they gave their audience license to do what they wanted to do, like all smart kings. Actin' crazy, sexin' up, doin' drugs. What an example of a duopoly they formed with the Rolling Stones! A classic example of marketing good-cop bad-cop! How we were trained to think of them! Many people have had dreams with the fabs as characters, as if they were their intimates.
I could go on and on, I have just woken up!

They originally formed to smuggle Preludin out of Germany, where it was legal, into the UK, where it was not. Being a mild speed, it worked for them like an ADD med, allowing them time to develop their harmonic singing. I think they present several thumbnails that shed light on modern life.

This job interview should go well:

Job Interviewer: So, you have a masters degree. What's it in?
Applicant: I studied the Beatles.
JI: Oh, you have a degree in entomology,
A: No, I studied THE Beatles. You know; John, Paul, George and Ringo.
JI: Oh, is that so? Let me show you THE door.

If anyone wants to make a bet: Times Square, New Years Eve, when 2199 turns into 2200. Ask people at random if they like the Beatles you will get some yes answers.

And not just from other cryonic survivors.

I sat in on at least one of those RnR classes, and Glen Gass, the prof, was a friend-of-a-friend and very cool guy. Actually, seeing if anyone would mention that class is pretty much the main reason I skimmed through this thread.

I took that class a couple years ago (I have a music minor, so I've taken a lot of history of rock courses). It was so far beyond awesome there isn't even a word for how much fun it was. I would love to get a MA in Beatle-ology, but only if I had a shiatload of money and no worries about actually using a degree.

/took the Beatles class with the other IU rock history prof, Andy Hollinden
//it was way better than the class I took with Gass

I tried to take take that class and the Frank Zappa one, but never got in. I was COAS, so go figure. Instead, I just spent all my free time listening to their records and reading everything about them I could get my hands on. How much could I have missed?

Just the video part, really. Beatles Anthology video series plus the Beatles' movies. I think we only watched "Let It Be" and "Magical Mystery Tour" in class, because the others are pretty readily available. Otherwise, all you missed was hilarious commentary from the professor.

/COAS too, for my majors anyway
//just lucky, I guess
