Saw them years ago on my birthday at CBGBs and they opened with a cover of "interstellar Overdrive. Most hear-damaging show I ever seen. An hour before the show i went outside and there was Buzz having a smoke. I couldn't think of a single thing to say to him

Ozma/Gluey Porch Treatment FTW

Actually I might even want to change that to "Lysol"

I saw The Melvins (and Tool!) open for GWAR in LA back in ~1992. The GWAR fans were abusive to The Melvins, so Buzzo punished them: he just smashed down on an Emaj chord over and over and over. I was pure sonic punishment. After about 3 minutes of this torture, the crowd relented and Buzzo and the boys played one more song, then left in disgust. It was a awesome.

Wow, that's awesome. I've never seen the Melvins alone, I was lucky enough to see them with Fantomas once as a part of the Melvins/Fantomas Big Band, that was special, since they only did like 4 or 5 shows together, if that.

They actually played Houdini last year in Los Angeles. Mudhoney was also on the bill and played Superfuzz Bigmuff. Enjoy the show.

Since we're all Melvins fans here, let me take this opportunity to plug some other great bands that are in a similar vein.

If you haven't heard the following yet, do yourself a favor and check ot:
Earth
Sunn0)))
Earthride
St. Vitus
Isis
Yob
Boris

Since you're Melvins fans, you've probably heard those bands before...but for the rare fan who hasn't...Good stuff, those bands.

Thanks man. Havent heard of all these guys so I am pretty excited. There are alot of bands I really love that were suggested to me by other Farkers on the music. It's not always "Your favorite band sucks" although it may seem like that sometimes. Cheers man.

Check out anything done by Scott, "Wino," Weinrich if you like Melvins. Or you know, Black Sabbath, for they basically invented the genre.

i ran sound for the melvins in a small club years ago, and i can honestly say that they're not a quiet band.

/though they weren't even the loudest band that week!
//jack endino's skin yard, followed a close second by helmet
///yes, i have suffered permanent damage...

so, playing entire classic albums now the "in" thing for bands to do?

I'm not saying the Melvins are loud, but the last time I saw them at the Met Cafe in Providence the local airport filed a noise complaint.

The most boring show in the history of my life. hands down. Day at the Farm in Berkley in the very early 90's i guess.

Years ago, after a Fantomas show, my then-girlfriend and I met King Buzzo. The Melvins were her favorite band, and she desperately wanted to meet him, so we hung around out back of the club. When he came out, she asked if we could get pictures. He said sure. Since we both had cameras, I took a pic of her with him, and then, when I went up to have her get one of him and me, she said, "You should get a picture of us on my camera, too, so we'll know we've actually got a pic!"

So the only proof I have of meeting King Buzzo is a picture of him with an ex. At least he has a baffled look on his face...

Ahh the Met Cafe you are missed. And it is incredibly awesome that you saw them there.

Make sure to check out Big Business as well. Although they're not on this short jaunt, they are the current rhythm section of the Melvins. Their first two albums are AMAZING! The next one, "Mind the Drift" is sure to be just as good. Big Business changed everything for me. The passed on story I heard was that Big Business was invited to be a part of Melvins as long as they didn't disband. Pretty awesome.

Saw Boris this past saturday and it was quite possibly one of the best shows of my life.

Saw it once at a club in Bloomington. I think there were 4 people there when it started, 2 when it finished.

nigeman 2009-03-04 05:23:52 PM
I also got a photo with Buzz, really cool guy and that was at a show recently in Sydney where they played Houdini in ites entirety with Trevor Dunn on bass and they were in 3 person mode. It was amazing. Really really amazing.

I saw the Melvins open for White Zombie back in the day. By the end of the set the crowd was booing and calling for them to get off the stage. Then Babes in Toyland came on and people started booing and calling for the Melvins to come back.

Here is my MELVINS testify moment:

I got into the MELVINS back in the early 90s as I was getting into many other so-called "heavy" abrasive noise bands.
Godflesh
Jesus Lizard
Unsane
Season To Risk
Helmet....etc....

I immediately discovered something was very different with the MELVINS that separated them from the above.
MELVINS are totally unique.
I find that their genius is far above and beyond their peers.
I can no longer lump them in with all the other noisy post punk type bands. I regard the MELVINS much the same way as Miles Davis,John Coltrane,Frank Zappa,Brian Eno,Swans and other true vanguard innovators.

Those who think of the MELVINS just as an old "grunge" band are missing the boat completely.
They are so much more original than just that.

Grunge, stoner, doom and many other genres owe a huge debt to the MELVINS.

I have always found it highly ironic that the MELVINS have had to open for bands like Tool and Helmet. Bands that pretty much owe everything to Dale and Buzz. (one of Helmet's first singles was a MELVINS cover)

MELVINS are a pure legacy band.

....btw,anyone here ever attempt to play a MELVINS cover?
Their stuff is often quite deceptively tricky. The bass and guitar riffs sound as basically simple but they sometimes have very unusual rhythms and stop/starts. It can be hard to find the correct queue to come in. Good luck with "Hung Bunny" from "Lysol"

They played "LYsol" live? You mean a slowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww, drawn-out song that goes on forever? are you serious?

COOl!
I used to love putting this album before going to bed. I found the distortion soothing

so much this. i will permanently have pieces of a budweiser bottle in my fretting hand due to a melvins show. seen them many times but why houdini? the maggot is a much stronger record to do live i would think.
