Just do a Google maps search for East England Tank Museum

In 2002, businessman Timothy Phillips was jailed for two months after being convicted of operating without a waste management licence and dumping hundreds of thousands of tyres on several sites in East Anglia.

He was said to have handled up to one million tyres a year through three unlicensed companies.

But he wasn't sentenced to spend the rest of his life, if necessary, schlepping the tires by hand until the mess is cleared up? WTF?

Which is also exactly where teh Googles sent me when I searched for "East England Tank Museum"^ like Psychotropic said.

So is it the big pile on the right of the museum? Because that looks like the big pile in the top middle of the museum.

And/or forced to pay up to remove the tires? Don't tell me, let me guess - whatever fine he paid went to general revenue instead? And any fines this liege lord baron has to pay will go the same place?

Pretty farked up scene there.

FloydA: Make the tires into the bar towels you promised us, ya cheap bastard!

While forcing restitution is excessive in crimes of survival, I'm all for it in greedy scam cases like this.
At a minimum, some significant fraction must be cleaned up by him. Alone. And he's on day-release from house arrest or minimum security prison until it's complete.

I really dont understand why we arent dumping tires into volcanoes. If you're freaked out about fumes, shred them, encase them in concrete "tombs" then drop them in. By the time any gas makes it to the surface it will be elemental and not complex molecular.

FTFA: "Like any form of fly-tipping it is the responsibility of the landowners to clear the mess up and unfortunately there is little chance of getting the company that originally dumped them to pay up."
The Environment Agency confirmed that the tyres had been bailed up and were being taken away for use in local building projects.

In 2002, businessman Timothy Phillips was jailed for two months after being convicted of operating without a waste management licence and dumping hundreds of thousands of tyres on several sites in East Anglia. He was said to have handled up to one million tyres a year through three unlicensed companies.

So they knew who it was, jailed him for a mere 2 months and he will likely not be liable for a penny of the costs incurred by the land owner who is being forced to clean up after his mess.

Considering the amount of money in disposal costs the businessman saved, crime certainly pays in Britain. It really is surprising Britain isn't in a more tropical clime... it's teeming with fruits - yuk yuk yuk

Although the material was dumped illegally by a crooked businessman, it is up to the landowner to clear up the mess.

It's almost comforting to know that criminals and thieves run your government, too. At least we're not alone.

In 2002, businessman Timothy Phillips was jailed for two months after being convicted of operating without a waste management licence and dumping hundreds of thousands of tyres on several sites in East Anglia.

I can think of a completely plausible method to deal with the tires and comply with the order. Make a declaration that the tires, being evidence in the trial proceedings are being returned to the owner as most evidence is that is not also illegal to possess. Then truck the tires to the property of Timothy Phillips. Timothy Phillips has already been excused of paying to clean up the tires and the Earl of Iveagh will have to eat the cost of the trucking but that has been established by the authorities in the article.

a pile so big you can see them on Google Earth

Given that it's easy to see things like automobiles, newspaper boxes, and patio tables using Google Earth... the pile is bigger than a patio table then?

/impressed that only enormous things are visible using Google Earth

Aren't tires considered "clean fill" in some states?

If I recall correctly, here in Connecticut tires are considered pollution, and they are typically unburied, trucked to Massachusetts, and buried there (where they are clean fill).

I, too stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night, and I notice that the closet volcano to the UK is in Iceland. I'm not sure if any of their volcanoes are active enough to support your plan (open crater, etc, but I AM pretty damn sure that:

1. Iceland doesn't want farking Britain's waste being dumped into their volcanoes

and

2. Even if they did, it would surely cost more to transport said tires to said volcano than it would to simply dispose of them properly on site.

How the fark does someone sneak a million tires onto your property? I mean, the first few hundred thousand, sure, but at some point wouldn't the dust from the trucks start to mess with your roses or something?
