Well, you can't blame them. If the banks did lend and do promotions and what not, then they would be criticized and beaten down by Barney Frank Machine. So I call these enterprising individuals taking advantage of the regulated market by providing an alternative. Kudos!

I'll start a partnership with you as long as you can provide me sizing information in both U.S. and European sizes. Some of my clients just emigrated here and will need a good selection.

The thing that sticks out in my mind is the Mafia seems to be upfront about the costs. You're taking X amount of money. They're charging Y amount of interest. Nobody's being forced to take the loan, people are finding them. It's not like the mob is going from door to door trying to convince people to take out loans.

If you take the loan, you either pay it back with insane interest, or they take your thumbs. Or, and this is the key thing, you can just not take a loan from the loan shark.

How unAmerican of you! You are saying I can avoid buying a house I can't afford or having the latest electronics? You are probably the same kind of loser who doesn't believe that when I do these things that the government should step in and help me out.

He should probably wait until Saturday. That's when my daughter is getting married to some jerk-off who will ultimately betray me to the Barzinis.

I can just see some knuckle dragger named Nick talking about collaterizing his loans, and selling them off in tranches to investors. Amazing, after a little chat with the guy from Moodies, they all have AAA ratings.

My younger son graduated from college recently and got a job. He recently got a raise. He direct-deposits into a bank that holds a credit-card for him on which he owes 5K$. They just upped his interest to 30% annually. He figures they think he can afford it. In ways, these guys seem worse than the mob.

Well, in my son's defense, he was attending NEIU. They have low tuition but are notorious for finding one way or another for tacking on an extra semester. This happened to him and he found himself having to survive an extra five months outside of his planning. He is resolved to paying this down as swiftly as possible through abandoning about 95% of his discretionary income for the next few months. Thirty-percent annual interest seems to be on the brink of usury to me. Guess he'll have to make sad-eyes to me another time, and then I will cut him a loan.

//Not hatin',
//just sayin'.

How is that link about payday lenders relevant to that post except in a lame attempt at a sanctimonious snark?

It's a stupid blog any way, and I've seen it ridiculed on Fark before, and not just by me.

Note: actual economists put their qualifications in the 'about' page of their blog. If there's no mention of any, it can safely be assumed it's because there aren't any.

Borrowing from the mob sounds more honest and reasonable than some of our lending institutions these days.

Around here our loan sharking is all on the up and up. They do it as payday lenders. I think their rates are probably worse than the mob rates. Don't know about breaking kneecaps on missed payments, the payday lenders tend to go for indentured servitude instead.

Loan sharks have better terms than many credit cards, they're certainly better than pay day loans, and they actually have ethics unlike banks.

Ironically, we have a pretty noisy contingent of people who think that would be a utopia and are demanding we undo our govt. and close the public schools. They don't get very far though, they keep getting popped for not paying their taxes.
