FTA: Court documents say Terry Burch, 67, of Portage, failed to prevent physical abuse to the girls or failed to report it.

I was initialling going to defend the old guy because how could he stop three young men acting like asshats. Then, when I saw he didn't report it at least, I don't have a problem with him getting charged (unless he was threatened in some manner).

Bus drivers are usually really shiatty anyway.

/in my experience
//which is obviously all that matters

Oldiron_79 2009-03-01 03:38:39 PM
As someone who has driven a bus before, I can tell you that Its a major PITA to try and pay enough attention to the road to be safe and enough attention to the students to be safe.

But reporting the behavior to someone else would be done while you... aren't driving. But somehow, that was too taxing for this guy, too.

First I ASK to see their genitals, and I'm in trouble. Then I DON'T ask and they show them anyway, and I'm in trouble.

/I can't win

man when I think of the gladiator tournament that my daily bus trip to Frelinghuysen jr high was in 1983, I shudder.

This would have been a normal day.

Can't they go with the prison bus approach with the driver cordoned off and a guard standing at the ready with a shotgun?

Exposing genitals, groping, igniting body spray, sounds like a good weekend.
The bus driver just didn't want to spoil the fun.

I'm sure if he would have intervened, we'd need Pedo Bear in here.

Asking bus drivers to play chaperons is the cheap way out. On the short bus they have matrons whose job it is to keep order, make sure the kids are safe, and let the driver concentrate on driving. But that's too expensive to do for every school bus so they force drivers into the role.

Trying to manage kids, especially teens, is a no-win situation. If they decide to be obstinate you can't get physical and all you get is grief. If I was that bus driver I would have claimed ignorance too. I'm just here to drive the bus from point A to point B, thanks. Hire a &^$#ing bus chaperon if you want order.

Porter County Prosecutor Brian Gensel is seeking to have the boys' cases moved to adult court.

So go out, have a few beers, register to vote. After all, you're adults, the County Prosecutor says so.

Yup, if the driver had tried forcing them to stop they would have probably tried saying he was a perv trying to touch them.

When I was 10 years old, I thought this was the funniest joke in the world:

A woman on a bus had a headache. So she opened her bottle of aspirins and shook out the last two pills into the palm of her hand.

Then the bus hit a bump. The pills bounced out of her hand and rolled all the way to the front of the bus and under the driver's seat.

The woman ran up to the driver shouting, "My aspirins! My aspirins!"

The driver said, "Then you better stick it out the window, lady!"

/It was hilarious at the time.
//Make sure you pronounce them "assburns."

yeah, this is not really fair unless you can prove he really turned a blind eye. There should be another adult on the bus if you're going to expect the kids to behave. It can't be safe fro him to be driving while looking over his shoulder. Just another example of people expecting in loco parentis.....

Is "flammable body spray" referring to Axe or Tag or farts?

/Not that there's a whole lot of difference

Good idea. And I think cities (like mine) that transport high school students on regular city busses should try this approach

Nothing like personal responsibility eh? What about punishing the kids for their acts?

That aspirin joke was the first joke I remember learning and telling, circa 1956-57. To this day I still pronounce the word as assburns - because I can.

The second joke was:

What's the greatest feat of strength in the world?
Wheeling, West Virginia

Great, talk about damned if you do, damned if you don't. If he HAD done something, some over zealous parent would have sued.

Treetop1000 2009-03-01 04:16:37 PM
How about not letting the little dickheads on the bus in the first place.

TedNigma 2009-03-01 04:19:45 PM
You really think with all the sue happy people in the world, that this guy would dare try to tell a snowflake what to do?

Think about it.

Treetop1000: How about not letting the little dickheads on the bus in the first place.

If you discriminate against the dickheads, then you'd have to also keep the sportos, motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, wastoids, and dweebs off the bus for the sake of consistency. But then the bus would be empty, and what would be the point of driving it?

Security cameras should be essential equipment on all school buses. Public transit too. The hardware and technology is cheap enough these days.

So that poor terrorized girl that allegedly informed the driver about these incidents...didn't bother to further report them to someone who can actually do something about it? Like the school admin or police? Fail.

Driver doing his job, leave him alone to do his job, driving.

gadian [TotalFark] 2009-03-01 04:56:28 PM
Meh, had the bus driver actually done something, the parents would've screamed bloody murder. That alone lies outside his pay grade. I would've done the same thing then drank myself silly every night. Instilling order in discipline is just not worth having to go through parents.

Didn't get the joke until I read that part. Thank you.

highwayrun 2009-03-01 05:07:04 PM
This boils down relatively easily.

The scope of work on his contract covers driving the bus. Show up, drive the bus, drop the bus off. He's not paid to be a disciplinarian. You know who is? The principal of the school, whose paycheck is at least five times greater than the bus driver. City bus drivers radio for the cops, the cops arrive in seconds and remove the offender from the bus. If the public transit doesn't expect the bus driver to be able to maintain order automatically, why would you expect a school bus driver to be able to do it?

And the protesting parents? Tell them if they'd like an orderly bus for their precious snowflakes that they're welcome to volunteer ride to maintain order. All of a sudden you'll see how crucially important it is to them.

School bus's here have video camera's with 'situation' buttons to mark the tape/hard drive when a situation comes up. Usually though, (didn't read the article) if a situation comes up like that, the students would be taken back to the school and dealt with there. Or the route stopped until the students were given to the proper authorities (parents/school/police)

But, what about the precious snowflakes' fragile self-esteem? Obviously this was a tragic cry for help and attention, and these poor lads need large doses of therapy and understanding.

What body spray exactly were they igniting? I'll give them extra points if they were igniting their OWN body spray.

atlas spanked 2009-03-01 05:37:57 PM
Right, a 70-year-old guy is supposed to take down three teens. And while he may (may) not have reported it, the teen girls could also have taken their complaint directly to the principal's office on arrival. Or their parents could have gone directly to the police with well-deserved complaints against the teens. But the driver!?!

What, like he's got money or something?

/Never. Ever. Take a job that involves caring for someone else's kids. The pay is shiate and parents are psycho.

Yeah, well, the first time the asshats dropped their pants the bus driver should have spoke up. It is his job.

It would be poetic justice if these kids get to go to prison. Better keep an eye on that bar of soap.

Because if you don't allow the dickhead on the bus, you might as well not allow the rest of the body on board.

This

and if you stop the bus and control the situation the way it needs to be done, they charge the bus driver with assault. Or they sue the school district.

A bus driver told me a story once about getting stabbed with a scissors (by a student), and nothing happened to the stabber getting all stabby. She quit because the school district admin didn't support her.

Thinking about this, I guess that most cops would quit if there weren't a thin blue line.

/discuss.
