Oh wait.

Pretty bad when the farking pigs can come into your own home and kill you. A taser is just another way for untrained power-tripping thugs to lord over their surroundings.

I hope this guy's family sues the PD for all their worth.

Too bad the fellow in question was a sadist. When he was tasered, the pain brought him joy which eased his depression which made him no longer think about suicide which made him depressed because he had no goals.

Hard to figure if your a troll or just one of the many sociopaths on fark.

Even when fark ups occur, even when there is some brutality, I never for one instant think of policemen in general as pigs, or think they are all bad, or even most of them. And I know for certain they are, with all their problems, a lot better than the scumbags they have to deal with every day.

I have also noticed a close correlation to those who have your kind of attitude and people with messed up lives.

I believe FTFA that the family called the "pigs". They tried to restrain him and he resisted. What are they supposed to do? Shoot him? Crack him over the head with a billyclub? Turn around a leave? Ugly situation. The guy apparently wanted to die and, unfortunately, he got what he wanted.

But don't let common sense or reality intrude upon your blind cop hate.

some_beer_drinker: i thought they were non-lethal? i seem to see a lot of stories where people die from this.

"Less lethal" would be the applicable term. Most of the time, people don't die -- but the risks are higher for those who already have cardiac trouble. As it happens, some chemicals such as cocaine can induce heart palpitations, and might disproportionately be found in people who happen to be Tasered. I don't know that many people on pacemakers get tasered, but I doubt that it'd be good for them, either.

Still, compared to most other instruments -- bludgeoning, conventional firearms, tranquilizers, chemical sprays et al -- they seem to be a fairly decent compromise. They're not too likely to cause death or permanent injury (especially compared to bullets, or, probably, beating somebody with a baton), don't need significant time to take effect, work from a short distance, and don't require great skill to use.

A Houston Chronicle analysis showed that HPD officers deployed their Tasers 1,724 times between December 2004 and May 2008, triggering 69 internal affairs investigations.

Police work must have been neigh impossible for the average officer before tasers were invented, huh? However did they manage?

By deploying the types of force that the Taser was designed to replace. Ten years ago a naked psycho who refused to cooperate would wind up with a cracked skull from a Maglite, or a gunshot wound. As Jument aptly pointed out, if the guy yelled "fark you, don't touch me!" , were the cops supposed to get in their cars and leave?

Jument: What are they supposed to do? Shoot him? Crack him over the head with a billyclub?

They actually did shoot him. There no such verb as "to tase" If there were, it would be something like, "to shoot somebody with a high-voltage stun gun, such as made by Taser"

If only there were a way for numerically superior armoured men to immobilize a naked unarmed man using only their hands, arms and legs. Or yes, even a stick to the knee, while certainly painful, is not lethal.

I'd prefer that they try to de-escalate situations instead of escalate situations.

If female psychiatric nurses can calm paranoid schizophrenics down without resorting to tasers, maglites, or asswhuppings, there's no reason a bunch of cops need to to tase or beat people with psychiatric issues.

Of course, you'd have to see a complete 180 in the police training trend that's taken hold in this country over the past couple of decades.

Right... because those are the only other ways for a group of officers to physically subdue an unruly person, and the idea of calming someone down by talking to them for a minute or two has never been part of the police training regimen.

Caulfield:

No chance that the taser has actually served to increase the statistical amount of violent police encounters, huh?

You're not very familiar with Houston, I take it.

In Houston, Tasers were sold to the public as being an alternative to shooting suspects. Houston police, historically, have been VERY trigger happy.

So, people were all for it. The cops would stop shooting unarmed suspects. Ostensibly.

Well, as it turned out, they lied. The number of shootings by the police didn't decrease with the deployment of the taser weapon system.

What did happen was that you saw tasers being deployed for such infractions as asking why the cops have stopped you. Tasers are used in Houston as an alternative to communicating in a professional and courteous manner with the people the police are, again ostensibly, here to protect.

Needless to say, Houstonians are pissed that they were sold a lemon by the city.

It used to be.

But, the police departments have been slowly trying to become more and more like active duty military in their training and tactics.

One can see a huge difference in the police officers today and the police officers 20 years ago. When I was a little 10-year-old, cops were friendly and polite. They were very approachable.

Today, the really old cops are still pretty much like that. The new generation of cops, however, are completely different. They are generally cold, unapproachable, and will treat you with suspicion if you greet them.

This.

My first wife was a residential counselor for 16 to 21-year-olds. She was 5'3", 108 lbs. and regularly had to restrain batshiat-crazy kids twice her size without even basic jiu jitsu training. How hard would it have been for multiple cops to put a naked guy in a basket hold, or (for fark's sake,) just talk him down?

But I suppose it could have been worse... this could have happened to a 15-year-old girl.

Houston wasn't sold a lemon. The Tasers work as designed. The problem is abuse by cops. But I have a question, not meant as snark: if there are all these documented cases of abuse, why do you put up with it? Seriously. If Tasers are bad, as citizens, take them away.

Caulfield: Houston wasn't sold a lemon. The Tasers work as designed.

When everyone in the city promises that the tasers will be used in place of handguns in cases where the suspects are armed, and that the tasers will reduce police shootings, and that doesn't happen, then the citizens were sold a lemon.

The citizens were lied to. Plain and simple.

But I have a question, not meant as snark: if there are all these documented cases of abuse, why do you put up with it? Seriously. If Tasers are bad, as citizens, take them away.

Because abuses of poor, and even middle-class, minorities isn't enough motivation for the residents of Houston to replace the entire city government.

Hell, even a small city like Bellaire can't muster up enough people to oust their local government when their entire city government supports overt racism and supports the shooting of unarmed minorities who are lying on the ground.
