No, he was originally sentenced to 30 years, 17 in prison and 13 in state supervision. This is not the same thing as receiving a 17 year sentence and then, upon serving it, the state saying "Oh BTW you still owe us something."

I always find that slightly crappy. A collection of crimes should be counted as one and the sentence adjusted accordingly. I'd be willing to bet there isn't a single person posting here in the US that wouldn't be able to be locked up for life for all of their jaywalking offences (max 6 months in jail) if they were added up.

This is farked up. If he's going to be "confined indefinitely", they have a legal remedy for that. It's called life without parole. Mental facilities aren't (supposed to be) prisons.
