Actually.... Inflation in Zimbabwe is 89.7 sextillion percent, which is .897 X 10^23 %.

If you added 5 or 6 orders of magnitude to account for the $250,000, you would be really close.

At least you were in the right neighborhood, subby. I award you +1 x 10-6

Actually, upon further review, you came even closer than I thought, subby. You missed it by a multiple of 0.005, 2-3 orders of magnitude.

$1 US = 12,600,000,000,000,000, or 1.26 x 1016

so $250,000 US (2.5 x 105) = 3.15 x 1021

So you missed by a multiple of 0.52 x 10-2, or .005.

Therefore, I ugrade your award you +0.005

I applaud you.

Zimbabwe lopped off 12 zeros off their currency at the beginning of the month so the conversion rate of the new Zimbabwe dollars printed after February 2nd is about 95 Zimbabwe dollars to a US Dollar. It was in the 40's just a couple of weeks ago.

/I expect Zimbabwe to just give up on having a currency soon and just use the US Dollar unofficially like Ecuador, El Salvador, and East Timor have done with the US Dollar and Kosovo and Montenegro have done with the Euro.

You missed the chemistry joke. 6.022x10^23 is an approximation of Avogadro's Constant, or the number of Carbon-12 atoms it would take to have a mass of 12 grams.

Which is why the following is absolutely hysterical to Chemistry nerds:
Snarfangel: Did they serve guacamole made from real avogadro's?

But... you didn't get it. Fail.

Foreign currency has been the unofficial black market standard for a long time now. But any official currency would probably be pegged to the South African Rand, not the pigdog capitalist USD (after all, we're the ones making the currency fail. Just ask Mugabe)

Psst... the implication was that Mugabe would not be tied to the US currency because he believes or at least expresses the belief that the U.S. is responsible for the current economic crisis in Zimbabwe. Paying state employees with US currency runs counter to that notion.

$250,000 USA would be 8.75 e 21 (sextillion) Zim-dollars, but they whacked off 9 zeros last month so in actuality, only(sic?) 8.75 e 12, or trillion.

That number is only good for 5 minutes.

olddinosaur 2009-02-28 06:01:52 PM
CORRECTION TO PREVIOUS POST:

They whacked off 12 zeroes, not 9 as I previously stated, but that is the second time they have done this, so it is actually 25 zeroes.

The thing I like about this thread is, you can be off by a factor of 1,000,000 to one and it is still close enough.

The thing I like about Zimbabwe is nothing.
