Doesn't exactly sound like the Dave Mustaine we all know, does it?

You mean the born-again Christian martial artist Dave Mustaine? Yeah it does.

Dear Metallica,

You suck.

~Did it say more than that? It didn't really need to.

Awhile back. He's had his pastor on his tours and everything.

Glasgowsfinest: Who is Dave Mustaine and why should I care?

He used to be in a band. Named Metallica. No relation to the current group, except for at least 2 of the members.

Glasgowsfinest: Who is Dave Mustaine and why should I care?

Excellent guitarist. Composed some of the best music I know, and has some magical knack for picking up some of the best guitarists in metal and bringing the best out of them.

Not so great vocalist, but fits his type of music to a t.

SilentStrider [TotalFark] 2009-02-28 04:09:37 AM
damn, that was pretty classy of him.

He also gets points for having a heavy metal song that quotes Monty Python.

That puts him at about even, right?

Why the hate for Dave Mustaine? He's an awesome guy.

ultrachronic: Why the hate for Dave Mustaine?

Last time I saw Mr. Mustaine live he was still an unrepentant a'hole. He was concerned that welfare queens were going to get all his hard-earned money and was hoping the GW Bush would be re-elected.

He produces great music (imho) but his personal philosophy (as far as I can gather) is (or was) loony right.

Sgygus [TotalFark] 2009-02-28 04:47:09 AM
ultrachronic: Why the hate ...

He shouldn't bring up his personal politics in the middle of a concert. On election night.

So you hate other political bands too I take it?

bhcompy: So you hate other political bands too I take it?

I'm not sure I could categorize bands (that I like) by politics. Clash maybe. Not Megadeth.

But Dave took it upon himself to ruin a fine party at that concert, reading election returns in the middle of the show. It was one of the very few concerts that I have walked out of. I had a lot of company.

unclejimbo827 [TotalFark] 2009-02-28 05:49:40 AM
Megadeth has always been political. If you're mad now, it's probably because Dave's politics aren't your politics anymore... which is an entirely different issue.

Sgygus [TotalFark] 2009-02-28 06:05:22 AM
unclejimbo827: If you're mad now, it's probably because Dave's politics aren't your politics anymore

Anymore?

I'm mad because he took a big dump in the middle of a party. How dumb is he? (I know he's not.) But reading election returns ... he had to know half his audience would not be happy with them, no matter which way it was going.

Then I drove three hours home staring into the face of four more years with what many consider one of the lamest presidents this country has had. I don't blame Dave for that, I blame my fellow citizens.

I was having a great time at the concert. I enjoy Megadeth, still do. Dave's crowing mouth I don't enjoy so much.

morrach [TotalFark] 2009-02-28 06:47:41 AM
I'd still have a beer with Dave. It's concerning watching him take the Chobtrain to Douchesdale, but he plays guitar almost as good as my fantasy self does.

thelocaldrunk 2009-02-28 07:00:02 AM
why should we care that he declined an invitation to this shin dig?

Subby, whatya mean?

RagingLeonard [TotalFark] 2009-02-28 07:40:45 AM
Mustaine should be right up on stage with Metallica to accept the induction. He wrote their best songs and should be recognized for that.

Madbassist1 [TotalFark] 2009-02-28 08:01:25 AM
Madadder: Subby, whatya mean?

REF > "Metallica - Some Kind Of Monster" 4 hour long DVD and probably the closest you and I will ever get to seeing what it's like to be in a major recording/touring act.

That would suck. I saw Ted Nugent once and he ruined a great set by going into a political rant. He has the right to his opinion and to express it and I was well aware I disagreed with most of them but I like his music. I kept the politics and music thing separate and figured he would too, after all it was his music we paid to hear. Unfortunately he didn't and it just was a total buzz kill.

With Dave, his political views did a 180 degree shift. He used to be quite progressive in his thinking and covered the Democratic convention for MTV in 1992. I was really suprised to hear of this turn politically by him when I found out.

At least he is not as bad as Blackie Lawless of W.A.S.P. Blackie sent out a hate and fear inspiring rant on MySpace the day before the election saying how if Obama was elected he would turn us into gay aborted terrorists or something.

On a side note, Judas Priest should be the band being inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame.

Propain_az 2009-02-28 10:19:06 AM
1. Megadeth is a much better band than Metallica.
B. Priest should be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
&. Metallica should give it up. Mediocre at best.

Not completly true. He co wrote the songs on Kill Em' All and some of the songs on Ride The Lightning, but after that nothing. Also the kicked him out before they released RTL so he wasn't there for a big part of their most popular time period.

So he worked on half their albums. I'd say that is considerable.

Not really. Metallica had a good ten years of album recording and touring without him, I'm not even going to go into the last 15 years. So sorry, but he doesn't qualify.

Two thirds. Unless you consider the post-Cliff band to still be "Metallica".

It's only wrong when they are against your own guy. Otherwise it's OK.

MegaDave still rocks!!

ultrachronic: Why the hate for Dave Mustaine? He's an awesome guy.

Because he's a dick. Once, after he became a born-again, he refused to play a show that had Rotting Christ open for him. The promoters then cancled the show, since Megadeth was the big name. It's a shame because Rotting Christ is one of the best bands in metal. Sakis sadi that it was a very unmetal thing for Dave to do. But it was also very Dave of Dave to do, since he's generally a dick.

Architecture Of Aggression 2009-02-28 01:18:35 PM
fact list:

Dave Mustaine is a dick
Megadeth seriously kicks a lot of ass
James Hetfield has lost it
Metallica's new album rocks hard
You can't beat old Metallica (unless you're Megadeth)

being a dick is what makes people awesome. Brent Hinds, ginger guy from Mastodon. biggest farking dick I've ever met in my life, but he makes AMAZING music. some of the biggest dicks in the world make some of the best music ever. Mikael Akerfedlt, James Hetfield (until 1989 but again in 2006-7), Dave Mustaine, Trent Reznor. the list goes on, even with some names that are more convincing than the ones I listed.

but yes, Metallica rocks. Megadeth rocks hard and always has. Death Magnetic kicks de ass too. I could go on but I just woke up :D

I agree that Dave made Metallica what it is / was (depends on if you still like them or not). It doesn't matter if he was around after RTL or not. Metallica would have never become eligible for the R&R HOF if it weren't for those early albums. Since that time they have morphed into something else. That early sound is what brought them their true/original fanbase. I think many forget the rabid following they garnered without the benefit of MTV, radio, the internet.

The sound (and the accompanying aggression and rebellion)that Dave contributed to is what hooked people. Later it became less music and more marketing/media driven imho.

everybody dave mustaine has ever worked with HATES the dude. not just metallica, but even Marty Friedman (megadeth's longtime axe-man, who is apparently super nice and gregarious) hates the motherfarker and talks about it constantly.
that having been said, i'm going to put on a blond wig and listen to peace sells... for the duration of the day.

I don't think it's surprising at all. People tend to make shifts as they grow older. Most musicians are going to be late bloomers since they basically get to be kids doing what they always wanted, but eventually they grow up too.

You're exaggerating. Only something like 10-15% of the first two albums were written by him. Go back and check, he has writing credit on like six songs total. And European metal was their biggest influence, not Dave. But don't get me wrong, I think the stuff he contributed was great, though.
